This is a time of year when well-intentioned white people experience both the impulse to practice traditions that aren't theirs, and defensiveness about those good intentions. However (with rare exceptions), your predominantly white congregation should not offer Day of the Dead/Día de los muertos services or activities, because they arise from Mexican culture. If you're not Latinx &/or your program isn't led by multiple Latinx people, it's not yours to do. (Note: All Saints, All Souls, and Samhain are their own distinct holy days. They are not "day(s) of the dead.") "Cultural misappropriation is harmful," says Rev. Connie Simon, "because it perpetuates colonial and white supremacy cultures. As long as it goes unchecked, it will perpetuate those cultures. More importantly, it disregards the dignity of those whose culture is being taken: they already live under the weight of oppression in our society. To take, distort, and misuse their culture is inconsistent with our Unitarian Universalist values." A Brief Introduction to the Soto School of Zen

27 October 2019 at 16:19
As we’re working on our Empty Moon website we quickly saw a need for a brief overview of the Soto school. The Wikipedia article on Soto is a flawed document, but nonetheless contains much useful information. We used it as a template, cutting anything that felt extraneous to that brief overview, while […]

Sunday Sermon - path of the ego or path of the spirit?

27 October 2019 at 16:13
As a Roman Catholic Unitarian Universalists I find it hard to find sermons and teachings which combine my two faith traditions. So I have decided to make up my own. I hope you will join me on Sundays for what I have tagged "Sunday Sermon." Today's gospel is from Luke 18: 9-14 The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector 9  To some who were confident of their own righteousness A )'>  and looked down on everyone else, B )'>  Jesus told this parable:   10  “Two men went up to the temple to pray, C )'>  one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.   11  The Pharisee stood by himself D )'>  and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector.   12...

'HARRY POTTER AND THE SACRED SPARK!' - A sermon by Mariela Perez-Simons (Traditional Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

27 October 2019 at 15:00
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 27, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Mariela Perez-Simons, Intern Minister. DESCRIPTION The dancer Martha Graham once said: “There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and since there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique; if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost." Inspired by this quote, we will talk about the sacred life force (or spark) that runs through each of us, and we’ll explore the practices, beliefs, and systems that, like the dementors in Harry Potter, drain the vitality from our lives. Come experience an uplifting and inspiring service that will help us reclaim passion and vibrancy in our lives. Ask Alexa - What should I do when life seems to be out of options?

27 October 2019 at 13:54

Alexa: When one has exhausted all the options in the world of the ego where is one to turn?

When one has exhasted all the options in the world of the ego, it dawns on the person that there must be a better way and they begin the search within for truth and meaning.

Alexa: Did you hear about the couple Stan and Janet who went out for a romantic date?
Yes, and when friends asked how it went, they said, "We had a Stan and Janet evening."

On Second-Guessing My Ability

27 October 2019 at 13:28
This picture has nothing to do with today's topic.

I second-guess my writing talent all the time. I live with a constant critic who has no trouble getting into my head (as it is already in my head) to tell me that my writing isn't enough -- not interesting enough, not good enough, not publishable enough. The voice insists that I am writing the same stuff I wrote back in sixth grade.

Despite this, I'm not adverse to critiques. In fact, I relish getting better. But I'm still afraid I'm not good enough.

I hear this is not uncommon to writers, that most writers feel a constant sense of doubt, and that we wouldn't want to meet one who doesn't. But I need to shake this sense of self-censure (and self-censorship) for my long-overdue re-editing of Gaia's Hands. I have to believe in the book to make it better.

So, how to believe? Cognitive journaling might help -- counteract all the mind-reading ("the critics hate it") and fortune-telling ("I'll never get published") and name-calling ("I'm so talentless!") and awfulizing ("my stuff sucks").

I joke about a magic spell, because I feel like my writing career is cursed. Of all the things I pooh-pooh in my life, curses are not one of them. I half-way believe in curses, even as I suspect they're an externalization of one's failure scripts. I'm looking at how to break the curse.

I suspect, though, I will have to live with it and create despite it. And someday, when/if I get published, I will celebrate all the harder.

Can I be a UU if...?

27 October 2019 at 11:41

- I support Trump?

- I don't applaud or "celebrate" social justice? (I'm in the military and have instilled preferences on "folx" I'm stationed with; nor do I condone the idea of government paid sex changes for service members)

- I would never participate in a pride march/rally? (I don't believe in cramming my beliefs down other's throats)

- I'm spiritual, believe in and want to serve God? (I find UU services severely lacking in this regard)

I'm conflicted because the reverend at my local UU affiliate appears to be an intelligent, down to Earth kind of guy, and I enjoy his teachings quite immensely.

Thank you for your thoughts on this matter.

Diwaliβ€”Hindu Celebration of the Victory of Light Over Darkness

27 October 2019 at 08:50

There are many Festivals of Light celebrated by religions and cultures around the world including Christmas, Chanukah, and Winter Solstice observances familiar in the West.  But none are more colorful or enjoyed with such gleeful abandon a Diwali, the Hindu festival of the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.  In most of the Northern Hemisphere the five day holiday begins this year on October 27, although some Indian states and Hindu diaspora communities start on October 28.  In the Southern Hemisphere it is observed in the Spring.

During the celebration, temples, homes, shops, and work places are brightly illuminated.  In most of India the climax of the festival occurs on the third day coinciding with the darkest night of the Hindu solar month Kartika. In the Gregorian calendar, it generally falls between mid-October and mid-November.

Lighting diyas around a Hindu temple.

During the climax, revelers adorn themselves in their finest clothes, illuminate the interior and exterior of their homes with diyas(oil lamps or candles), offer puja (worship) to Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperityand wealth, They light fireworks, and enjoy family feasts, where mithai (sweets),  and giftsare shared.

Details of the celebration vary across regions and even the names of each feast day change with local dialects and languages.  In much of southern India and in Sri Lanka Tamils celebrate the first day of Diwali as most significant.  Diwali is also a major cultural event for Jains and other religious minorities on the Indian Subcontinent.   the Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas to mark the release of Guru Hargobind from a Mughal Empire prison,  Newar Buddhists, unlike other Buddhists, celebrate Diwali by worshipping Lakshmi, while the Bengali Hindus generally celebrate Diwali, by worshipping Goddess Kali.  Except for Muslims and the small minority of Indian Christians, pretty much the whole country takes off to party.

William Simpson labelled his chromolithograph of 1867 as Dewali, feast of lamps. It showed streets lit up at dusk, with a girl and her mother lighting a street corner lamp
The Diwali festival is likely a fusion of harvest festivals in ancient India.  It is mentioned in Sanskrit texts such as the Padma Purana, the Skanda Purana both of which were completed in the second half of the 1st Millennium CE. The diyas  are mentioned in Skanda Kishore Purana as symbolizing parts of the Sun, describing it as the cosmic giver of light and energy to all life and which seasonally transitions in the Hindu calendar month of Kartika.

Most British, Commonwealth, and North American Hindu communities have their roots in the north of India and commonly celebrate these five days:

Indian diaspora communities often celebrate with public performances of folk dancing and other ethnic traditions like this one  at the United India Association of New England.
Day OneDhanterasmarks the beginning when people traditionally purchase some gold or silver or at least one or two new cooking utensils for good luck.

Day TwoNarak Chaturdasi is also called Choti Diwali when people take oil baths before sunrise with ubtan, a homemade paste of herbs that can be used as asoap, and a a face or body mask.

The goddess Lakshmi.
Day ThreeLakshmi Puja is the main and most festive day of the festival when people keep the house spotlessly clean and pure to welcome goddess Lakshmi. After a day of fasting sweets and gifts are shared.  Lamps are lit in the evening, and Lakshmi puja, a home religious observance celebrating the goddess with chants, mantras, and honoring of ancestors.  Celebrations spill from homes and businesses into the streets with more lamp lighting, singing and dancing and public fireworks.

A family celebrates with sparklers and new clothes.
Day FourGovardhan Puja or Padwa celebrates the love between husband and wife in commemoration of Parvati and her husband Shiva as well as the lifting the Govardhan mountain by Krishna to save a cowherd and farming communities from incessant rains and floods triggered by Indra’s anger.  It is thus also a harvest fest and day of thanksgiving marked by Annakut, the mountain of food. Communities prepare a meal over one hundred dishes from a variety of ingredients, which is dedicated to Krishna before shared communally. Hindu temples on this day prepare and present mountains of sweets to the faithful who have gathered for darshan, a visit. In Gujarat, the day is also called Annakut is the first day of the new year and celebrated through the purchase of sabras, the  good things in life, such as salt, offering prayers to Krishna and visiting temples.

Family temple prayers before the Mountain of Sweets.
Day FiveBhai Duj celebrates the bond between brotherand sister.  Women of the family gather, perform a puja with prayers for the wellbeing of their brothers, then return to a ritual of feedingtheir brothers with their hands and receiving gifts. In some Hindu traditions the women recite taleswhere sisters protect their brothers from enemiesthat seek to cause him either bodily or spiritual harm. Often brothers travel to meet their sisters, or invite their sister's family to their village to celebrate their sister-brother bond with the bounty of seasonal harvests.

A sister feeding her brother on Bhai Duj.
Variations on these are almost infinite in the complex world of Hinduism and can even vary from village to village in the same regions.  But the joy of the season is celebrated by more than 800 million people worldwide making it one of the largest religious festivals on the planet.

27 October 2019 Worship Service and Religious Education for Children and Youth

27 October 2019 at 04:59

Please join us on Sunday (27 October 2019) at 11:00 AM for “Returning to All Souls:  A Celebration of Dia de Los Muertos  (The Day of the Dead)” with Lee Spruell and Virginia Villarreal.

We are thankful and honored to welcome back Lee Spruell to our sanctuary, who will once again share his family’s celebration of the Day of the Dead, as has been celebrated in Mexico for years.

You are invited to bring a picture of a departed loved one to place on the ofrenda.

Although the theme is death, the Day of the Dead is not considered a solemn or spooky holiday.  It is not Halloween.

In many traditions, this is the time of year to feel closer to those who have departed this world, and the celebration is for the expression of our love and joy at having known them.

Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service.  Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.

Shutdown

26 October 2019 at 22:49

PG&E, the utility that everyone in northern California loves to hate, is going to shut down our power tonight, due to a forecast of high winds that could cause a downed wire that could in turn spark wildfires.

Why does PG&E have to shut down the power? Because they are owned by hedge funds, which demand maximum short-term profit instead of efficient running of a utility company, and they have skimped on power line maintenance for decades. Or, to put it more pointedly, as the governor of California recently said about PG&E: “Years of mismanagement, years of greed.”

Power could go out very soon, so I’m setting up the propane stove so I can cook dinner.

Another Homecoming and the Words that Come With It

26 October 2019 at 14:17
The leaves have finally turned, orange and red and brown, dazzling the campus for Homecoming. I remain convinced that Homecoming is the remnant of a pagan ritual that captures parts of the harvest festivals and part of the sacrificial king (in the guise of a football game.) This would make pumpkin spice latte a sacrament, and I'm not sure I want to go that far.

It's been a long time since I've thought this way, of the seasons of the year yielding a mythology we live by. I had no reason not to think this way, given that both Quakers and Episcopalians can skew romantic about the seasons, and rare individuals of each even call themselves pagan. In fact, the liturgical Christian traditions follow a liturgy of seasons, and mystical Christian traditions offer a glimpse of the movement of the year as well.

When I was younger, I was what I called a kitchen witch, making my own rituals in solitude, following the seasons of the year. This faded with my years as a professor, even though my religious life didn't give me the hands-on relationship with life that I wanted. (Correction: Membership in the Religious Society of Friends did, but I've been 90 miles from Meeting for 21 years. The Episcopal Church put me too far from the feeling of sacredness.)

We need our rituals, whether dressed Wiccan or pagan or Christian (or one of the many other religions we profess). Those who have stripped ourselves of rituals because they're "pagan" lose our moorings to the seasons and to the earth. Those without rituals that speak to them frantically try to rip rituals from others by brandishing the word "Satanic", or create a mockery of ritual that worships hatred, bullying, and totalitarianism (MAGA rallies, I'm looking at you.)

I think about what Autumn says to me -- golden and bittersweet, rejoicing at the leaves and wrapping up against the chill. Saying goodbye (Les's death still resonates) and hugging the last of harvest to my arms. Snuggling with cats -- always snuggling with cats.

Hoping it makes for good poetry now that I vow not letting work become everything.
