From Juneteenth to Reparations: Reclaiming Our Stolen Stories

By: Unitarian Universalist Association
The narratives and stories that Black people, journalists, and media-makers create and share in community-led newspapers, visual art spaces, libraries, and other physical and digital Black gathering spaces can be useful in helping to make the world around us more loving, more easeful, more liberated, more Black. Media reparations are about saying: no more.

“No” to journalism and media written with the blood of Black lives. Instead, cultural organizer Diamond K. Hardiman shares with us the practice of an invitation to collectively dream of reparative policies, interventions, and futures that will radically transform who has the capital to tell their own stories.

Learn more about how media reparations are an invitation to reclaim black stories from ideation to distribution: https://bit.ly/3ytYu0z

In order to achieve full reparations, we need to reconstruct media systems built on violence, specifically anti-Black violence.

Monton Unitarians embrace Salford Pride

By: Rory Castle Jones

Rev. Anna Jarvis, minister of Monton Unitarian Church in Greater Manchester, made a bold statement at Salford Pride earlier this month, decked out in full rainbow gear with a large sign saying simple: “Free Mum Hugs”. Anna, who is herself a mother, wanted to offer hugs to Pride attendees to give out a message that “whoever and wherever you are, know that you are a precious, cherished, wonderful human being – and you are loved.”

Lots of people came in for a hug – and Anna and her congregation members staffing the Unitarian stall had a fantastic day. Their stall offered, amongst other things, the opportunity to write a name on a prayer tree. A total of 61 names were added, which were then read out in the church’s special Pride service the following day, where the congregation celebrated “the uniqueness of every human being, and pledged to continue working towards justice for all in the continued battle against discrimination.”

Unitarian ministry student hosts discussion at Queer Festival

By: Rory Castle Jones

Earlier this month Shana Parvin Begum, who is training for the ministry at Unitarian College, hosted a campfire discussion on faith, sexuality and gender diversity at the UK’s first wellbeing festival for queer, questioning, curious women and those who are non-binary. The ‘Out & Wild Festival’ took place in Pembrokeshire in June. Shana’s gathering offered the space to talk about religion and LGBTQ experiences and bring two often conflicting topics together in a safe place. Click here to find out more about ‘Out & Wild Festival’.

Flashback to Extinction or an Omen—The Tunguska Event

An artist rendition of what Siberian natives saw in the sky before the explosion that has come to be known as the Tunguska Event. It was the largest impact event on or near Earth in recorded history.   An explosion three to six miles above the surface of the Earth is estimated to have been in the range of 10–15 megatons of TNT—about 1,000 times greater than that of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.   It knocked down virtually everything standing in 830 square miles , shook the Earth the equivalent of a 5.0 earthquake on the Richter scale, caused fluctuation in atmospheric pressure measured in London, and caused a stratospheric cloud of ice crystals to orbit the Earth for months affecting the climate of the Northern Hemisphere ....

By: I Am UU
That means that You own Your body and have control over it, guided by your own conscience, your wants for your health and mobility, and your aesthetics.

You have been given control of your own body and how other people interact with it or gain from it.

You own Your body and, guided by your own conscience, your wants for your health and mobility, and your aesthetics, you make the choices about it. You eat how you want; get tattoos or piercings or color your hair; give of your body to others where you feel you can and should and, just as important, do not when you choose not to.

Right now, the two places where this is most important to proclaim are abortion access and the rights of transgender people, especially youth. The right to access heath care that supports your bodily autonomy is crucial to having that autonomy. Allowing people safe and professional care for the body they inhabit is also vital to their mental health.

Protecting transgender youth from the effects of puberty safeguards their mental health while they figure out the long-term plan for their lives and the body they alone must live in. Letting people wear clothing or makeup to reflect who they are or even to seek professional medical modification is just and compassionate.

Allowing a person to opt out from the trauma and the risks involved in pregnancy gives them room to consider their lives and the direction they want to take and lets them choose when (and if) they are ready to be parents, which is also better for children.

We may individually disagree with their choice, but we respect that it is their choice to make. I am personally doing many things that I hope will reduce the number of people who seek an abortion, but that number will never be 0 and I respect that people who want an abortion have a right to the most convenient and painless procedure possible, respecting that the fetus does not have a right to use their body against their wishes AND that it cannot be moved safely to any other place anyway. It has no right to the womb, and thus no other rights are actually relevant.

And so it is, as with so many issues, Unitarian Universalism demands that we respect the right of conscience and allow people to express the truth of their identity and live the meaning into their lives through Bodily Autonomy.

The Trans History You Weren’t Taught in Schools

By: Unitarian Universalist Association
Trans, non-binary, and gender-queer people have long been absent from the mainstream stories of history despite always being present. Fortunately, historians are now beginning to look more carefully to find and amplify their important stories. We are committed to widening our own circle of history as we use our platforms to lift up the trans and non-binary folks in Unitarian Universalist communities today. #Pride

Often erased from history, scholars are now realizing that transgender and nonbinary people have existed in most human societies across time.

Sharing some of UUA LGBTQ and Multicultural Programs Director, Rev. Michael J. Crumpler's recent message via UPLIFT:

"I know the days are heavy and the nights are long, but now more than ever we must find the strength to celebrate Pride.
I know the attacks seem relentless and the tide of death seems to be drowning us all, but now more that ever we must find the strength to celebrate Pride...

And by Pride I don’t just mean a parade, a Tea dance, or even a march. What I mean is now more than ever we must find the strength to live our truth unapologetically. We must find the force of will to fight like hell."
May we give strength to each other during this season of #Pride to find joy and continue the work of justice.

What Would Those Birthday Sisters Emma and Helen Think Today—Murfin Verse

A young Emma Goldman  in her mug shot after her arrest for conspiring with her lover Alexander Berkman  in an assassination attempt on steel baron Henry Clay Frick. Note— I have posted this poem before, but the two women are particular favorites of mine and I immodestly think that the poem is one of my better efforts.   I also think that they would be astute commentators on the attempted re-subjugation of women by the Supreme Court and Red State governors and legislators.   Emma, of course, a champion of free love and sexual liberation, would never have had faith in the courts to protect women.   An advocate of militant direct action, she would be loudly calling for a real revolution.   Helen, the Wobbly and Socialist, might be s...

Useful beauty...

"Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be beautiful or believe to be useful."—William Morris.  And yet, there may be things that appear pretty on their surface that lack beauty, for beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the beholder may be looking more deeply into things. What about objects that represent the enslavement of man to industrial processes? What of things that come to us from the pillaging of the earth's resources, a bit of beauty brought here at the cost of great loss in other places or to the earth itself? And then there are things that glow from an inner beauty in that they represent the maker's growth, a thing not seen quickly or at first glance. And then there's that beauty that's found in relationshi...
