Unitarian Universalist theology is varied and complex, with deep roots as well as reimaginings rooted very much in our current context. Our UU seminarians and emerging religious professionals continue to mold and shape our UU theology in new ways and it brings me profound hope for our faith and our shared future on this planet.
In her reflection for Braver/Wiser, Karishma Gottfried, a UU leader and seminarian at Union Theological Seminary, considers how queerness and UU theology are inextricably linked, reminding us yet again that revelation is not sealed and our future leaders hold much promise for the deepening of our theology and our connections to one another as a faith community:
“Unitarian Universalism ‘queers’ the idea of theology itself, not requiring the theos (God) to do the logos (talk). Our ‘God-talk’ includes the atheists, agnostics, polytheists, and all those who endeavor to engage in the search for truth and meaning.
My queerness and my Unitarian Universalism are inextricably linked, informing each other at every bend in the road. I wouldn’t be who I am without either of them.”
