Online Religious Education for Children and Youth On Vacation โ€” Resumes 16 August 2020

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor โ€”

Religious education for children and youth is taking a break for a few weeks and will return on Zoom (with a surprise) on 16 August 2020.

Meanwhile, we will still post ideas and projects for you to do at home and stay in touch via the All Souls Religious Education Group on Facebook.

Parents — email Susan Caldwell if you are not a member of the religious education group on Facebook.

We can still use your art work illustrating our principles and sources.

You can post it on the All Souls Religious Education page on Facebook or email it to Susan Caldwell.

We can use more illustrations of the third and fourth principles and — of course — the eighth principle too:

  • How people act when they support each other and learn together
  • How people act when they are free to search for truth in their own lives?
  • How people act when they are working to dismantle racism and create beloved community?

Online Adult Religious Education โ€” 26 July 2020

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor โ€”

Please join us on Sunday (19 July 2020) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class via Zoom.

We will be continuing Faith Forward:  Spiritual Practice with “Life as Spiritual Practice.”

In the last session of this series, we will explore the idea of pilgrimage as a spiritual journey to a sacred place, as practiced in other faiths and our own.

We’ll think about where we might want to make a pilgrimage of our own some day — whether near or far — or share experiences of pilgrimages we may have already made.

As we wrap up the series, we’ll also examine the idea of living a life of intentionality, and the ways in which our faith calls us to do that.

Online All-Ages Worship (5 July 2020)

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor โ€”

Please join us for our 5 July 2020 Sunday worship at 11:00 AM for the presentation of the Ralph Waldo Emerson Award to Dr. Pamela McPherson.

Our service will be livestreamed on Facebook Live here.

We will have a  virtual coffee hour reception after the service for Dr. McPherson on Zoom.

The Emerson Award is given annually by the congregation of All Souls to the individual or organization from the wider community who has exemplified the Principles and values of liberal religion.

Past recipients have included the late Sister Margaret McCaffrey, Rev. Lee Jeter of the Fuller Center for Housing, the Philadelphia Center,  Frances Kelley, Lady Carlson of Together Louisiana, Brian Salvatore, and many others.

We are honored to announce that the 2020 Emerson award goes to child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Pamela McPherson for her role as a federal whistle-blower, revealing the conditions under which migrant children are held in detention at the border, and testifying before Congress on the deleterious effects on the children’s psychological and emotional well-being.

Ordinarily, we would have a reception, with cake and everything, for our honoree.  So Dr. McPherson — we owe you cake — but in the meantime — we will have a virtual coffee hour via Zoom after the service.

While we are remaining physically distant, we want to know how you are doing, what you need, and what you are interested in.  You can let us know using these online surveys.

And you can contribute to All Souls using this online resource.

The Zoom link  for this group will be found on the All Souls Religious Education Facebook Group.

Summer is here and art kits really are headed your way on Saturday afternoon (20 June 2020) — this week’s summer project is Peace and Justice Stones.

You’ll get some paint suitable for outdoors (non-toxic but not washable so wear clothes that can be stained by paint), some brushes, and some black river rocks.

The art boxes also contain some markers and colored glue for later projects.

The idea is to paint messages of Hope, Love, Peace, and Justice on the rocks and leave them in places where others can find them. Then take a picture of your rocks in the spots where you’ve left them, and we’ll share those on our Sunday Zoom worship service.

If you haven’t had a chance yet to paint them, we can work on them together and share on the religious education Facebook group in the coming week or on next Sunday.

Online Adult Religious Education โ€” 21 June 2020

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor โ€”

Please join us on Sunday (21 June 2020) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class via Zoom.

We will be continuing Faith Forward:  Spiritual Practice with “Session 8 — Discernment and Devotional Reading (Lectio Divina).”

Discernment is the practice of listening to the “small, still voice” within. One way that we can practice discernment is with a kind of devotional reading that calls us to contemplate a particular passage and to break it open to find the message inside that speaks to us.

We will try this in our session with a short passage by Thomas Merton, and we will also think about how as Unitarian Universalists we might create our own lectionary (a cycle of readings that have meaning for us and call us to revisit them and contemplate how that meaning grows and changes with us).

We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.

It’s a lot of words but we’ll take the time to take those words apart and find out what they really mean.

Online Adult Religious Education โ€” 24 May 2020

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor โ€”

Please join us on Sunday (24 May 2020) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class via Zoom.

We will be sting Faith Forward:  Spiritual Practice with “Session 4 — Prayer.”

This is a re-attempt at last week’s class that was cancelled due to an unscheduled Zoom videoconferencing outage.

We will explore questions like “what is prayer?” and “what is prayer for you?”

The first question may have several definitions in the dictionary but the second one is very much your own.

I am including this passage from Anne Lamott as a way of reassuring you that all are included in this session regardless of one’s relationship to a higher power or lack thereof:

You may in fact be wondering what I even mean when I use the word “prayer.”  It is communication from the heart to that which surpasses understanding. Let’s say it is communication from one’s heart to God.  Or if that is too triggering or ludicrous a concept for you, to the Good, the force that is beyond our comprehension but that in our pain or supplication or relief we don’t need to define or have proof of or any established contact with.  Let’s say it is what the Greeks called the Really Real, what lies within us, beyond the scrim of our values, positions, convictions, and wounds.  Or let’s say it is a cry from deep within to Life or Love, with capital L’s.

So let’s say it is any and all of those things plus whatever it is for you.

And if it’s nothing for you, we want to talk about that too.

See you on Sunday.

Betty Gorey Parent Drive-In Memorial Service (23 May 2020)

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor โ€”

On Saturday (23 May 2020) at 10:00 AM CDT (Shreveport local time), we will have a drive-in memorial service to honor the life of Betty Gorey Parent.

The memorial service will happen in the parking lot of All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church (9449 Ellerbe Road, Shreveport LA)

The service will be broadcast locally in the parking lot to the FM radio into your car (87.9 MHz).

The memorial service will also be a livestream video on the All Souls Facebook page.

We will gather — in physical and virtual space — to celebrate the life of Betty Gorey Parent.

In our efforts to do our best to honor her wishes in an event that is safe for all concerned, we are asking attendees to observe these essential COVID-19 safety precautions:

  • All in-person participants (speakers, family members, and designated support volunteers) will be masked and will keep social distance.
  • All in-person attendees must remain in their cars in the parking lot. Some will be able to see the service live from their parking spots, but some may not be able to see the service live. These persons can access video and audio via Facebook Live.
  • Attendees may also access the memorial service audio via FM frequency 87.9 MHz FM on their car radios.
  • Overflow parking will be available in the parking lot of Grace Community Church (with their kind permission). The FM broadcast should be available there as well or you can use Facebook Live on your cell phone.
  • Betty wanted a second line out of the church at the end of her service, so in as close an approximation to that as we can muster, we’ll give her a closing parade! Attendees are invited to drive through the circle as they exit after the service. Feel free to bring a white or (tie-dyed) handkerchief to wave out of your window if you are so inclined.
  • Attendees who wish to do so may take a packet of wildflower seeds as a gift from Betty as they exit. These will be lovingly and safely put together and distributed by people conscientiously observing safety precautions.
  • Finally, we are making virtual attendance as accessible to all as possible from your homes! The All Souls Facebook page is a public page that you can access without a Facebook account, just as many people do for Sunday services. You can participate there and pay your respects in the Comment section for the video stream. This will be saved and remain accessible to the family.

Thank you for your cooperation as we celebrate this one-of-a-kind woman in this first-of-its-kind service at All Souls!

How Are You Doing โ€ฆ What Do You Need โ€ฆ And How Do You Want to Stay Connected?? โ€” Updated 16 May 2020

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor โ€”

Bennett Upton (All Souls Board President) has designed surveys to determine how you are faring through the current COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic and what kind of help you might need or might be able to give.

We also want to know what kind of online programming you would find most helpful to keep you connected to your church community even when we can’t be together in the same room.

Please take just a few minutes to fill out these surveys and help us shape a strong and resilient congregation for the days to come.

  • Coronavirus Check-In — How are you? We’re trying to assess the impact of the coronavirus on the congregation to find our areas of greatest need.  We’ll keep this information held within a small group of staff and lay leadership in the congregation.
  • Staying Connected — We’re looking to see how we can serve you better and keep you connected to the community.  We’re interested to hear all of your thoughts on how we could do it better.  We’ll also use this to better target our communications with you.  Your answers will be kept confidential, held in a small group of members only and anonymous whenever possible.
  • Share Your Interests — Interested in participating in some guided discussion groups?  We can offer these and would be happy to keep you in the loop on whatever you are interested in.  We are more likely to offer things that people have expressed interest in.

Feel free to share these survey links with people that you feel might be interested as church membership is not a requirement for participation in these surveys.

We welcome the inputs from anyone who participates in the All Souls community.

Online and Offline Giving Options During COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic โ€” Updated 16 May 2020

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor โ€”

Due to the recent COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic and the  restrictions limiting us from having worship in face-to-face settings, we need to find another ways to keep everything happening at All Souls.

If you want to donate to All Souls, you can click on the link provided to our secure donations server.

On this site, there are four options for your donation:

  • 2020 Pledges
  • Capital Fund Drive
  • Collection Plate
  • General Fund

Pick the desired options for your donation.  Your donation can be a one-time donation or a recurring donation (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or yearly).

Note:  If you give online, be sure to include your name in your entry. Several of our pledges are showing up anonymously.  If you wish to remain anonymous, thank you for your generosity and we will certainly honor that.  But if you want credit on your All Souls pledge statement, be sure you are filling in the space that says “Name on Card.”

If the name on the card is different from the pledging member, please specify the name on the pledge account in the Comments section and again — thank you!

If you want to send a check, please mail your check to:

All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church
9449 Ellerbe Road
Shreveport LA  71106

Please indicate on the memo line of your check if your check is for the 2020 pledge campaign, the capital fund drive, the collection plate, or the general fund.

Thanks for your continued support during these challenging times.

Online Adult Religious Education โ€” 10 May 2020

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor โ€”

Please join us on Sunday (3 May 2020) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class via Zoom.

We will be starting Faith Forward:  Spiritual Practice with “Session 3 — Keeping Sabbath.”

This morning we’ll explore the idea of Sabbath time, what that means to each of us, and how we carve it out of our days, now and as we begin to transition to a new normal.

As we enter our focus on personal spiritual growth and development, we’ll look at this program (developed by First Unitarian Church of Dallas, Texas) where members are asked to commit to a daily spiritual practice, monthly communal worship, an annual retreat, and at least one once-in-a-lifetime experience of pilgrimage (not necessarily a geographic pigrimage).

The second session will include an experience of meditation as well as a look at the difference between spiritual exploration and spiritual discipline (both of which are important to a spiritual life).

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor โ€”

Please join our ongoing series of classes — “What We Choose: Ethics for Unitarian Universalists” facilitated by Bennett Upton (All Souls Board President).

This class will happen at 12:00 Noon every Saturday beginning 9 May 2020.

This course from UU authors Amber Beland and Manish Mishra-Marzetti offers an intentional process of engagement with others in examining ethical concepts, dilemmas, and questions to help us clarify and expand our ethical understanding.

Participants examine how they have arrived at ethical positions that they hold dear.

They explore new perspectives, identify areas for further questions and exploration, and perhaps more fully embrace ethical positions they reach through careful discernment.

This program will deepen and expand participants’ knowledge and skills for a process of ethical reflection that is central to living our Unitarian Universalist faith.

Online Religious Education for Children and Youth (3 May 2020)

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor โ€”

Please join us for our online religious education for children and youth this Sunday (3 May 2020) — we will start this online Zoom classroom about 5 minutes after our worship service is over.

The Zoom link  for this group will be found on the All Souls Religious Education Facebook Group.

This Sunday — We’ll take some time to think about our fourth Principle (the free and responsible search for truth and meaning).

Perhaps your family has been taking this time to go through things in your house and think about what you still use and what is no longer useful and could be donated to someone else.

Sometimes it’s good to do that with our own beliefs and opinions as well … to examine carefully some of the things we’ve taken for granted and see if they still hold true for us.

We might find out in the process that things are not always what they seem!

We’ll also explore our first source (Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life).

Bring your lunch, meet up with your All Souls friends, have lunch (or don’t – it’s up to you), and just catch up.

That’s it.

Just a chance to connect and catch up midweek.

We’ll make this a weekly thing.  We may decide in the future to bring in guest speakers but for now we’re just hanging out and enjoying each other’s virtual company.

Hope to see you there.

Online All-Ages Worship (5 April 2020)

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor โ€”

Please join us online this Sunday (5 April 2020) at 11:00 AM for our online streaming worship service — “Reclaiming Our Stories” by Mollie Corbett.

The worship video will be available on the All Souls Facebook page (live streaming and recorded).

Mollie is the creator of “Outlier” — a unique multimedia arts installation and advocacy vehicle for survivors of sexual abuse and assault.

With the Outlier project, many victims have become survivors who have then become advocates for others like themselves.

We are proud to present “Reclaiming Our Stories” — a service dedicated to people who rise from the worst moments of their lives to step into their own power and help others step into theirs.

Because the church page is a public Facebook page, you will be able to see the worship service whether or not you have a Facebook account.

You do need log into your Facebook account to “like” and comment on the service.

A note for parents of younger children:  Your family is still welcome to join us for worship.  Mollie is also a parent and will be cognizant of a family audience.  At the same time, if you are at all concerned about the topic, you’re welcome to join us for the first part of the service and wait to watch the recording of the sermon afterward.

While we are remaining physically distant, we want to know how you are doing and what you need.  You can let us know using these online surveys.

And you can contribute to All Souls using this online resource.

Online Religious Education for Children and Youth (5 April 2020)

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor โ€”

Please join us for our online religious education for children and this Sunday (5 April 2020) — we will start this online Zoom classroom about 5 minutes after our worship service is over.

The Zoom link  for this group will be found on the All Souls Religious Education Facebook Group.

This Sunday: Every Person is Important and Valuable!

Last week, we talked about the importance of covenant in our faith and the fact that our seven principles are a covenant.

In the next seven weeks, we’ll look at each of those principles and the ways that we live them every day — even now — when we must “stick together by staying apart.”

This week — “the inherent worth and dignity of every person” — or in the words for younger people — “every person is important and valuable.”

What are some ways we practice that Principle, respect for the worth of every person, even when we can’t be together in the same place?

From week to week in the worship service, we’ll be using your art work to illustrate our principles and sources.  You can post it on the All Souls Religious Education group on Facebook,or email your artwork to Susan Caldwell.

For this Sunday, think about:

  • How people act when they consider every person important and valuable
  • How people act when they believe everyone should be treated fairly and kindly
  • How people act when they support each other and learn together
  • How people act when they are free to search for truth in their own lives
  • How people act when they work to see that everyone gets a vote
How people act when they believe in peace, liberty, and justice for all
  • How people act when they believe that we are connected to each other and to all life on earth?

Send Susan Caldwell a picture illustrating any of the principles or sources and we will see that it’s used in a worship service (if not this week then next week)

Join us on the new Zoom link about 5 minutes after the worship service.

NOTE: Zoom now requires a meeting ID and password.  This information will be on the All Souls Shreveport Religious Education Group on Facebook.

If you’re on Facebook but haven’t asked to join the group yet, please do so.

If you aren’t on Facebook, send Susan Caldwell an email or text Susan at 318-465-3427 to join the children and youth on Zoom.
