Online Adult Religious Education β€” 4 October 2020

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor β€”

Please join us on Sunday (4 October 2020) at 9:00 AM for our adult religious education class via Zoom.

We will continue the next series of Faith Forward β€” UU Theology.

UU Theology is a planned as a six-session series exploring various theological concepts through a Unitarian Universalist lens.

Each session addresses the question β€œWhat does our Unitarian Universalist tradition teach about this concept, and how does that help me clarify and act on my own beliefs?”

This week in UU Theology, we will explore Session 6 β€” β€œWhat Saves Us?”

We look again, more closely, at the roof of our theological house or soteriology (the study of salvation).

If that’s a loaded word for you (or even if it isn’t), take a calming breath and join us to explore this concept in a Unitarian Universalist context.

We’ll talk about how community offers us the opportunity for healing and wholeness along with how each of us is part of that process.

New UU Class Begins This Sunday (4 October 2020)

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor β€”

The β€œNew UU” class will start this Sunday (4 October 2020) with facilitator Bennett Upton at 1:00 PM via Zoom.

Bennett has started a new session of this course that offers insight into Unitarian Universalist history, theology, and practice as well as a deeper dive into our own congregation.

This is a great way to learn more about our faith and our church and to spend some time with other members in a small group setting.

It’s not just for newcomers and not just for those who’ve never taken it before β€” a refresher is always good.

Citizen Education Launch on Amendment 5 (Monday, 5 October 2020)

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor β€”

Citizen Education Launch on Amendment 5 will happen on Monday (5 October 2020) at 6:30 PM via Zoom.

A Message from retired Lieutenant General Russel HonorΓ©:

I’m writing to invite you to the launch of an education campaign to oppose Constitutional Amendment 5 which is on the ballot this November.

I think it’s one of the worst things to hit Louisiana since Katrina.

We’re launching a citizen education campaign to fight Amendment 5 this Monday, October 5th, at 6:30 PM on Zoom.

I’d like to invite you to attend.

We can have up to 1,000 people on the Zoom call.

You can register for the call here.

What Amendment 5 Would Do

Amendment 5 would allow industrial corporations to negotiate what they pay in property taxes, while the rest of us pay what the law requires.

It would defund public education, pull money away from roads, bridges, healthcare and hurricane recovery and shift the tax burden to working families and small businesses.

The ballot language was β€œengineered to intentionally confuse the average American voter,” as one reporter put it.
That’s why the community education campaign we’re starting is so important.

Attendees to the event on Monday will receive:

  • Clear, concise information about where Constitutional Amendment 5 came from and the impact it would have
  • A packet of educational material and social media posts to share with your congregation, organizational members, clients, customers, neighbors and local media
  • Information about how to get involved in the campaign to defeat Amendment 5

So please join us on Monday (5 October 2020) at 6:30 PM.

Tell your friends.Β  Organize your neighbors.

Use this link to register.

Increase Voter Turnout in November 2020

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor β€”

Together Louisiana is building a statewide network of block captains to increase voter turnout.

Thanks to All the Souls who have already signed up to help with this.

Together Louisiana now have over 1,100 block captains signed up across our state.

The 2020 election goals are:

  • 1,000 block captains statewide by September
  • 3,000 block captains statewide by October

Being a Block Captain means:

  1. You care a lot about voter participation
  2. You’ll attend a 1-hour training (by Zoom or phone)
  3. You’re willing to help organize 10 households in your immediate neighborhood to make sure they vote.

Together Louisiana will provide you with a list of voters and the materials and training you need to be effective.

This is a purely grassroots effort and is not supporting any candidate or party.

If you are interested or just want to learn more, sign up here.

Online Religious Education for Children (27 September 2020)

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor β€”

Please join us for our online religious education for children and youth this Sunday (27 September 2020) β€” we will start this online Zoom classroom at 1:00 PM after the virtual coffee hour is over.

This week we will explore β€œAsking Questions.”

Our fourth principle is the free and responsible search for truth and meaning.

One way that we embark on our free and responsible search is to keep asking questions.

We’ll hear a story of someone whose questioning led him to discover a planet

We will also play some games involving questions.

We can still use your art work illustrating our principles and sources.

You can post it on the All Souls Religious Education Group on Facebook or send it to Susan at dre@allsoulsshreveport.org.

We can use more illustrations of the third and fourth principles and β€” of course β€” the eighth principle too:

  • How people act when they support each other and learn together
  • How people act when they are free to search for truth in their own lives?
  • How people act when they are working to dismantle racism and create beloved community?

Online All-Ages Worship (20 September 2020)

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor β€”

Please join us on Sunday (20 September 2020) at 11:00 AM for our annual Water Communion worship service.

Our service will be livestreamed on Facebook Live here.

This Sunday is our annual Water Communion service.

Like all of our services during this time of COVID-19, this annual tradition will look a little different this year due to the pandemic.

Traditionally, this service has been a time of coming back together, bringing water from our various summer experiences, whether close to home or far away, to pour into a common container as we share our stories.

The water is then boiled, filtered, and frozen for use in future ceremonies such as baby dedications as well as future water communions.Β  Β This water is never used for drinking or other internal consumption.

We cannot come back together in person this year.

However, we have several ways for you to participate in a virtual Water Communion:

  1. Bring a small container of water to the church, and leave at the office door with a short written statement of where the water comes from, or what it symbolizes.Β  Although the breezeway by the office is sheltered, it’s a good idea to put the container and note into a plastic shopping bag or another container to provide some protection from the elements.
  2. Leave your water at the office door with your name on it, and let us know if you would like to join us on the Zoom to tell the story of your water.
  3. If it’s inconvenient for you to drop off water at the church, Barbara can pour from a pitcher of β€œsymbolic water” she will have on hand, just as she has done for our in-person services. If you prefer this option, you can share your story in one of two ways.Β  You can email your story to Barbara.Β  Or you can email Barbara or text her to let her know you’d like to join us on the Zoom to tell the story of your water in the worship service.

On Saturday evening (19 September 2020), you will receive a link and instructions for participating on Sunday morning via Zoom if that is your wish.

Every year, we remind you that although Water Communion may include water from travels far away, it’s not a travelogue β€” it’s about our experiences.

The water you share may just as likely be from a puddle in your backyard where you watched tadpoles with your child, from the faucet in your house, a water bottle from one of the protests, or any source that represents the much smaller and often inward journeys we’ve all had to make during this time.

We will have aΒ  virtual coffee hour after the service on Zoom.

While we are remaining physically distant, we want to know how you are doing, what you need, and what you are interested in.Β  You can let us know using these online surveys.

And you can contribute to All Souls using this online resource.

We can use more illustrations of the third and fourth principles and β€” of course β€” the eighth principle too:

  • How people act when they support each other and learn together
  • How people act when they are free to search for truth in their own lives?
  • How people act when they are working to dismantle racism and create beloved community?

Online Religious Education for Children and Youth (16 August 2020)

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor β€”

Please join us for our online religious education for children and youth this Sunday (16 August 2020) — we will start this online Zoom classroom at 1:00 PM after the virtual coffee hour is over.

The Zoom link  for this group will be found on the All Souls Religious Education Facebook Group.

We had originally planned for a socially-distanced tie-dye event for this Sunday.
However, we’re going to postpone that for now:
  • Along with the recent surge throughout our state, we keep learning more about this virus and the wider age spectrum of people who are getting sick from this virus.
  • With schools reopening and our families in various stages of preparation — in-person or virtual — we don’t feel responsible bringing people together for additional in-person gatherings that — however fun — are not essential.
  • When the weather gets cooler, we’ll figure out some multi-generational outdoor activities that require less handing of things from person to person and allow for better physical distancing.
  • If your family was looking forward to tie-dye, email Susan and she will get a tie-dye kit to your house with a few colors of dye, some soda ash, and all the instructions.  Otherwise, we promise we’ll get together and tie-dye as soon as it’s safer.

We can still use your art work illustrating our principles and sources.

You can post it on the All Souls Religious Education page on Facebook or send it to Susan at dre@allsoulsshreveport.org.

We can use more illustrations of the third and fourth principles and — of course — the eighth principle too:

Online All-Ages Worship (5 July 2020)

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor β€”

Please join us for our 5 July 2020 Sunday worship at 11:00 AM for the presentation of the Ralph Waldo Emerson Award to Dr. Pamela McPherson.

Our service will be livestreamed on Facebook Live here.

We will have a  virtual coffee hour reception after the service for Dr. McPherson on Zoom.

The Emerson Award is given annually by the congregation of All Souls to the individual or organization from the wider community who has exemplified the Principles and values of liberal religion.

Past recipients have included the late Sister Margaret McCaffrey, Rev. Lee Jeter of the Fuller Center for Housing, the Philadelphia Center,  Frances Kelley, Lady Carlson of Together Louisiana, Brian Salvatore, and many others.

We are honored to announce that the 2020 Emerson award goes to child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Pamela McPherson for her role as a federal whistle-blower, revealing the conditions under which migrant children are held in detention at the border, and testifying before Congress on the deleterious effects on the children’s psychological and emotional well-being.

Ordinarily, we would have a reception, with cake and everything, for our honoree.  So Dr. McPherson — we owe you cake — but in the meantime — we will have a virtual coffee hour via Zoom after the service.

While we are remaining physically distant, we want to know how you are doing, what you need, and what you are interested in.  You can let us know using these online surveys.

Please join us for our online religious education for children and youth this Sunday (21 June 2020) — we will start this online Zoom classroom about 5 minutes after our worship service is over.

The Zoom link  for this group will be found on the All Souls Religious Education Facebook Group.

I look forward to seeing pictures of your peace and justice message stones, hear your stories of where you left them, and who you hope will get your messages.

And if you still haven’t painted your message stones, no worries — we will also be having a Seven Principles Scavenger Hunt in your house.

We can still use your art work illustrating our principles and sources.

You can post it on the All Souls Religious Education page on Facebook or send it to Susan at dre@allsoulsshreveport.org.

We can use more illustrations of the third and fourth principles and — of course — the eighth principle too:

  • How people act when they support each other and learn together
  • How people act when they are free to search for truth in their own lives?
  • How people act when they are working to dismantle racism and create beloved community?

Join us using the religious education Zoom link about 5 minutes after the worship service.

If you aren’t on Facebook, send Susan Caldwell an email or text her at 318-465-3427 to get into Zoom for online religious education class.

Summer is here and art kits really are headed your way on Saturday afternoon (20 June 2020) — this week’s summer project is Peace and Justice Stones.

You’ll get some paint suitable for outdoors (non-toxic but not washable so wear clothes that can be stained by paint), some brushes, and some black river rocks.

The art boxes also contain some markers and colored glue for later projects.

The idea is to paint messages of Hope, Love, Peace, and Justice on the rocks and leave them in places where others can find them. Then take a picture of your rocks in the spots where you’ve left them, and we’ll share those on our Sunday Zoom worship service.

If you haven’t had a chance yet to paint them, we can work on them together and share on the religious education Facebook group in the coming week or on next Sunday.

Online Adult Religious Education β€” 21 June 2020

By: Steve Caldwell, Web Editor β€”

Please join us on Sunday (21 June 2020) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class via Zoom.

We will be continuing Faith Forward:  Spiritual Practice with “Session 8 — Discernment and Devotional Reading (Lectio Divina).”

Discernment is the practice of listening to the “small, still voice” within. One way that we can practice discernment is with a kind of devotional reading that calls us to contemplate a particular passage and to break it open to find the message inside that speaks to us.

We will try this in our session with a short passage by Thomas Merton, and we will also think about how as Unitarian Universalists we might create our own lectionary (a cycle of readings that have meaning for us and call us to revisit them and contemplate how that meaning grows and changes with us).
