'#DoDemocracy' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose (Traditional Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

By: Various (aggregated by Player FM) β€”
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 12, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. DESCRIPTION Did you know that nearly 91,000 people were removed from the voter rolls in Oklahoma this past April? Jason Nichols, an instructor of political science at Northeastern State University, and former mayor of Tahlequah recommends we all double check our registration with our county election board to be sure we will able to vote in upcoming elections. One of the fundamental principles of our faith is the democratic process and the foundation of all our freedoms is our right to vote. Our justice team and ACTION leaders are inviting you to join with other local organizations and with congregations nationwide in voter registration, protecting voting rights and Get-Out-the-Vote drives. There are over 50 million people in the U.S.A. who are eligible to vote but who are not registered, and millions of registered voters who are infrequent voters.  This Sunday, on the same Sunday as the UUA launches their #VOTELOVE campaign, we will launch our own campaign here at All Souls, #VOTELOVEBEYONDBELIEF. I need to know I have done all I can do to make our democracy strong. Let’s learn how to do democracy together.  You’re invited! #DODEMOCRACY   #VOTELOVEBEYONDBELIEF  SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: Twitter: All Souls Church Website:

Heat and Transformation - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

By: Various (aggregated by Player FM) β€”
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on January 12, 2020. The first in a sermon series inspired by the elements of baking. Sometimes transformation takes heat, it takes trouble, agitation or discomfort. We will have just finished two days of talking about our religious education program with an interim facilitator. Telling stories from the past can turn up the heat, but as in baking, the results can be something nourishing.

The State of Our Justice Union: Looking Back a Little To Move Forward - West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church

By: Various (aggregated by Player FM) β€”

by Reverend Chris Long and

Judy Montgomery, Worship Associate

West Shore is known throughout Greater Cleveland for its justice-making. The work that our congregational Task Forces and our Social Action Committee continues to do, with a few highly dedicated members and friends of the congregation, is astounding. We will reflect on our individual and collective journey over the last year with our justice efforts at West Shore and beyond. Rev. Long will also share some of his experiences with our Interfaith Community Partners and other organizations in Cleveland. He will also include details regarding his faithful journey with our denominational efforts in becoming a living tradition striving to become an “anti-racist, anti-oppressive, multicultural” faith movement as we lean into 2020. This holy work needs more of us in it!

'GRATEFULNESS AND GREAT FULLNESS' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Contemporary Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

By: Various (aggregated by Player FM) β€”
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 5, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Brother David Stendal-Rast, a Benedictine monk has observed: "Ninety-nine percent of the time we have an opportunity to be grateful for something. We just don’t notice it. We go through our days in a daze." We often don’t realize what we have until it’s gone. It’s often after a relationship ends that we realize how much it meant to us or when we leave a job or when our children go away to school or when our health changes and we realize we’ve taken it for granted. How can we appreciate what we have now in this moment and not when we come to die, realize we have not lived? Join me to experience the profound joy and gratitude of this moment and this life and share tools for living with presence and purpose. 'WHERE DO WE COME FROM?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Traditional Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

By: Various (aggregated by Player FM) β€”
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 5, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION We are in the third decade of the 21st century. We’ve split the atom, discovered quarks and the most microscopic of things. We have telescopes that let us peer into the ageless past. Yet there are still people who think that everything there is to know about life and spirituality and truth is written down in the Bible. Not just any people think this, but people at the highest level of our government and military and judicial systems who get their values from reading the Bible literally. As we enter the 2020’s, I want to explore how we can celebrate the marvel of creation and how we can save and preserve it, but I also want to discuss how we can live with people who think they know the Truth and who want to impress there version of it upon the rest of us? There is an anti-scientific and anti-intellectual movement that threatens our way of life. We need to pay attention to who is going on our school boards and city counsel and courts. We need to have a fire in our belly about what’s happening in this world. I feel some fire burning inside and out as we enter this new decade and I hope you do too. We need new ways to interpret religion and community and to figure out how to live upon this earth. It is great to be a part of this church at this time in this place – with you. Christmas by the Book: A Selection of Holiday Readings - West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church

By: Various (aggregated by Player FM) β€”

by Martha Blachly-Cross and Ryan Rosu, Worship Leaders

Vicki Warden, Worship Associate

For the shortest, darkest weeks of the year, human beings have, from the beginnings of time, created festivals of light to brighten their days. Christmas, Hanukkah, Epiphany—each anticipates the longed-for return to spring, each has its rites, symbols and above all stories. For the holidays, then, a reading list. Chaucer urged, “To read and drive the night away.”

'I'M TIRED OF THIS CHURCH' - A sermon by Rev. Carmen White-Janak (Contemporary Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

By: Various (aggregated by Player FM) β€”
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 29, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Carmen White-Janak, Guest Minister. DESCRIPTION 2009 through 2019 closes out a decade. A decade where many travelers on their journey have chosen conformity over releasing old patterns, habits, and pathologies, leaving them tired and weary. My message, "I’m Tired of This Church," is an exploration of what’s possible when we give ourselves permission to step into greater possibility by not conforming to what’s always been. 'PREGNANT WITH SPIRIT' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Contemporary Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

By: Various (aggregated by Player FM) β€”
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 22, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Last year on the Sunday before Christmas, the hilarious and talented Dionne Lambert joined me on the chancel for a short skit of God talking to his angel Gabrielle (Gabriela in this case) about whether or not to go down to Earth as a human being in the incarnation of Jesus. We will reprise this provocative and heartwarming dramatization of the tensions, struggles, doubts and hopes of a "God in heaven" making the tremendous decision to become human and walk the Earth. It is truly a story about our own lives as much as it is a way of understanding a God of incarnation. If you’ve never seen this skit, you will love it! If you saw it last year, we have a few new surprises in store. The message following the skit will offer hope, joy and spirit for the holidays. Come experience the spirit and carry it home. 'A LOVE AFFAIR WITH LIFE' - A message by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

By: Various (aggregated by Player FM) β€”
The message was delivered on Sunday, December 15, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Humanist author Michael Werner writes: “For all the talk about reason and science, Humanism is really about a passionate love affair. It is a love affair with life, not a mythical hereafter. Humanism is a love affair with a progressive vision of civilization in which each of us can add to our growing library of wisdom, our evolving knowledge of what there is and what is truly important. None of the great achievements in history would have been possible without a love of the adventure of learning and the adventure of creating a better life. Our great cultural achievements in science, art, music, literature, philosophy, history, psychology, and political thought all inform each other and have been born of that long Humanist tradition.” How are you passionately in love with life? Does your love affair with this world need rekindling? *Music: Rick Fortner SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

'SEEK YE (YOU) FIRST (MATTHEW 6:33)' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

By: Various (aggregated by Player FM) β€”
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 15, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION Humans are born into an ongoing personal and collective anxiety to experience their own natural divinity or "power" as a species. We often call this "seeking" God, seeking Source or seeking the Force. I like to refer to this Self Actualization. By nature we are seekers and survivalists, simultaneously. The two traits are inseparably connected and in some ways are powerfully identical. We all want to last forever or for as long as we can, adding years to life and life to our years. Let's learn to recover and recapture our divine DNA and release its fuller manifestation in, to, through and as us living out our immeasurable and immortal potential. 'ELASTIC HEARTS AND PINCUSHION SOULS' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose (Traditional Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

By: Various (aggregated by Player FM) β€”
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 15, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. DESCRIPTION My throwback sermon to Rev. Wolf was the fourth in a series describing the pathway from Vision to Mission. It is poignant and powerful message of love beyond belief and I look forward to sharing it with you. Here’s a taste, “Deep within the understanding of a congregation is a sharing of two worlds – one of things as they are, the other of things as they ought to be - and loving them both. This is the capacity to see the divine in the human.” I invite you to join me, as John’s words are sure to help us all prepare a place in our hearts for the simple miracles of this season. Awe and Then Some - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

By: Various (aggregated by Player FM) β€”
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on December 8, 2019. When we consider the magnitude of our universe; observe the intricate beauty and yet the sometimes seemingly random cruelty of nature; contemplate the mysteries of life and living, we can feel both small and humbled, as well as have a sense of being a meaningful part of something much, much larger than ourselves. We'll explore this sense of awe and how we might cultivate it as a spiritual practice.

'THE ILLUSIONS THAT DIVIDE US' - A message by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

By: Various (aggregated by Player FM) β€”
The message was delivered on Sunday, December 8, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION “The Christians and the Pagans sat together at the table, Finding faith and common ground the best that they were able, Lighting trees in darkness, learning new ways from the old, and Making sense of history and drawing warmth out of the cold.” —lyric from Dar Williams' "The Christians and the Pagans," Mortal City album, 1996   This lyric reminds me of the underlying unity that is the spirit of All Souls. We can we find common ground across our religious differences in ways that make the holidays a time of connection and love rather than separation and judgement. Live to the Point of Tears - West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church

By: Various (aggregated by Player FM) β€”

by Reverend Anthony Makar and

Michael Miller, Worship Associates

Religions around the world honor the gift of tears and have found ways to ritualize it. During the Passover Seder, when Jews remember their escape from Egypt, they bring salt water to their lips to symbolize the tears of bondage. In ancient times, when a person died, mourners put their tears in bottles and sometimes even wore them around their necks. Over the ages, the weeping of tears has been a sign of the mystical experiences of saints and repentant sinners. These transcendent moments go beyond what the mind can comprehend; tears are a response of the heart. Today, we explore the role that tears might play in our Unitarian Universalist faith life.

All songs are played in their entirety at the end of the service
