Please join us on Sunday (14 October 2018) at 11:00 AM for “This I Believe” with Rebecca Tuggle, Kevin Henry, and Tena Hines. John Allen will be our worship associate.
Three All Souls members will speak about the foundational principles that guide their lives today and the continuing journey that has brought them here thus far.
#RONFEST2018 continues in this service and in a brief celebration afterward. We celebrate the service that Ron Thurston has provided to All Souls as we bid him farewell.
Our “Give Away the Plate” recipient for September 2019 is Northern and Central Louisiana Interfaith.
Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service. Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.
Please join us on Sunday (21 October 2018) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class.
This fall, we’re excited to introduce Faith Forward — a multi-part adult religious education series that will not only introduce visitors and new members to our faith but will also help those who’ve been here awhile to deepen their faith journeys.
This morning, we continue with Session 6 of UU History 101 — “A Question of Calling.”
We’ll look at the roles of two figures in our recent history:
Child care will be provided — See you then.
Please join us on Sunday (21 October 2018) at 11:00 AM for “Good News in Difficult Times” presented by the children, youth, and adults of All Souls.
The 20 th Century Unitarian Universalist theologian James Luther Adams said:
Religious liberalism holds that the resources (divine and human) that are available for the achievement of meaningful change justify an attitude of ultimate optimism.
Do we truly have right and reason to be hopeful?
Our children and youth will present some reasons.
This service will also include a brief memorial tribute to Carol Graywing (former member of All Souls who had moved to Seattle several years ago to be closer to her daughter and grandson, and who also passed away in September 2018).
Carol was very active in the women’s movement of the 1970’s and 1980’s along with the women’s movement within our own denomination as well.
Throughout her life, she remained a powerful voice for women, a thoughtful poet, and a seasoned leader of worship with a wonderful sense of reverence and drama. Carol’s obituary can be found here.
This Sunday is her daughter and Carol’s daughter Lauren Gaddy has bought flowers to be placed on the altar of every Unitarian Universalist church where Carol held membership — San Francisco, Little Rock, Shreveport, and Seattle. She has also has asked that we remember her in the service. Knowing the depth of this loss to our national faith community, we are honored to honor her.
A newcomer session will follow the service — all interested persons are welcome to attend
We will see a video about our faith and hear your stories as you are comfortable sharing them along with answering any questions you may have about Unitarian Universalism and about membership in our congregation.
Our “Give Away the Plate” recipient for September 2019 is Northern and Central Louisiana Interfaith.
Our “Give Away the Plate” recipient for November 2018 is The Philadelphia Center. From their website:
The Philadelphia Center developed in the spring of 1990 as concerned citizens responding to the HIV/AIDS epidemic as it spread into the Shreveport area of Louisiana. Over the past 20 years, The Philadelphia Center has expanded to become the only HIV/AIDS resource center in Region VII. The Philadelphia Center serves the parishes of Caddo, Bossier, Webster, Claiborne, Bienville, Red River, DeSoto, Sabine, and Natchitoches.
For the month of November 2018, All Souls will donate half of all our non-pledge income to the Philadelphia Center for a sponsorship of their 2019 Resolution Run in January.
Please join us on Sunday (4 November 2018) at 11:00 AM for “Loving the Hell Out of the World: The Universalist Belief of Hosea Ballou” by Rev. Jacqueline Anne Luck.
Please be here to welcome our guest minister – Rev. Jacqueline Anne Luck.
Many of you may remember her as a member here years ago.
Rev. Jacqueline left Shreveport to attend Starr King School of the Ministry followed by serving three churches in Jackson MS, Laurel MS, and Gray TN before retiring to New Orleans LA.
As we focus this season on our Jewish and Christian heritage, it’s appropriate that we look to the Christian roots of our Universalist history.
Music will be provided by our guest pianist, Ms. Gulya Chandler.
Our “Give Away the Plate” recipient for November 2019 is The Philadelphia Center.

Please join us on Saturday (10 November 2018) from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM for our monthly building and grounds work day.
On the second Saturday of each month is our building and grounds work day.
Most of the work on our physical space is done by you — the members and friends of All Souls.
We have tasks available for all ages and all levels of ability.
Stay the whole time or just an hour or so if your day is already full.
If you can’t stay, consider dropping off snacks for the crew.
Please join us on Sunday (11 November 2018) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class — “From Jesus to Nicea: A Flash History of the Early, Early Christian Church.”
Although the Unitarianism and Universalism that form the two streams of our faith largely evolved on this continent, we do look back to the theologians considered heretics of the early Church as the earliest forerunners of our faith.
The journey to what came to be orthodox Christianity was a long one — full of many often cacophonous voices.
Come take a whirlwind tour.
Please join us on Sunday (11 November 2018) at 11:00 AM for “Tribute, Solace, Challenge: Some Thoughts on Veteran’s Day” with Steve Caldwell, Jennifer Russell, and Susan Caldwell.
On this Sunday morning at 11:00 AM in every time zone, bells of peace will ring from churches, universities, cemeteries, ships at sea, and war memorials around the world in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended the Great War (ostensibly the “war to end all wars” which sadly would later come to be called “World War I”).
On this day, we will pay tribute to those who serve and have served, exploring what “tribute” may and may not mean.
We’ll also take some time to lift up the values on which our nation was ostensibly founded and how we grow a nation that ultimately upholds those values for all — bending the arc always toward justice even when it’s heartbreaking, even when it’s easy to believe we are moving backward.
A newcomer’s class will follow the service — child care provided.
Our “Give Away the Plate” recipient for November 2019 is The Philadelphia Center.

NOW (National Organization for Women) Shreveport – Bossier and All Souls in partnership are offering a parent / caregiver orientation for the Our Whole Lives (OWL) comprehensive sexuality education curriculum for grades 10-12.
This orientation will happen on Monday (26 November 2018) from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM at All Souls
If you are a parent or adult caregiver / guardian of a high school-age youth in grades 10-12 (ages 15-18), we invite you to come and learn from our trained facilitators about the OWL program.
We we will be offering to youth from All Souls and the wider community after the first of the year.
OWL is a comprehensive lifespan sexuality education curriculum jointly created by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ.
OWL can be taught in the church setting or in a secular community setting (we plan to offer it in an effort to make it available to as many youth as possible in the wider community).
OWL is a series of age-appropriate sexuality education programs that cover the lifespan from K-1 through older adults (ages 50+).
We plan to offer the curriculum for high school youth (grades 10-12 or equivalent) in early winter – spring 2019 and then offer the longer program for grades 7-9 next year (2019-2020 school year).
OWL is built on the foundation that parents are their children’s first sexuality educators. However, research shows that (given a choice) parents would expand the scope of the sex education offered in their children’s schools or that they can offer themselves.
That is probably nowhere more true than in Louisiana where abstinence-only sex education is not only incomplete but also often woefully inaccurate.
Created using the standards of the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), OWL meets or exceeds the National Standards for Sexuality Education Core Curriculum (grades K-12) in every category of assessment.
OWL Offers:
To RSVP for the orientation or for more information, call or text Susan Caldwell at 318-465-3427 or email her using dre@allsoulsshreveport.org.
Please join us on Sunday (18 November 2018) at 11:00 AM for our annual all-ages Thanksgiving service, communion ritual, and feast — “Finding Gratitude” by Rev. Barbara Jarrell.
As we do each year, we will begin with a shorter service in the sanctuary and then process to the social hall for an inclusive bread and water communion (focused on the community we share and the need to feed the hungry people of the world).
After the ritual, we have a feast that really is our best potluck of the year.
If you don’t cook, no worries.
There are plenty of people who do cook and there are plenty of things we need that you can pick up from the store.
And even if you can’t bring anything, come anyway. There are plenty of ways you can help with this feast.
Sign up here to let us know what you can bring.
There will be no religious education classes for children and youth today — these classes will resume next Sunday (25 November 2018).
Our “Give Away the Plate” recipient for November 2019 is The Philadelphia Center.
Please join us on Sunday (25 November 2018) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class.
We will be viewing “Divine Dance” — a video by Father Richard Rohr from Talks at Google.
At this time of year when we consider our roots in the Jewish and Christian traditions, join us to hear a different take on God and Christianity as something relational, inclusive, and all-encompassing, as opposed to what Father Rohr calls the “supernatural Santa Claus handing out cosmic lottery tickets to those who attend the right church or say the right prayer.”
Please join us on Sunday (25 November 2018) at 11:00 AM for “The Evolution of God” by Rev. Barbara Jarrell.
Rev. Jarrell is in the pulpit this morning — exploring the ways that God has grown with us in the continuing co-creative process as our own minds and hearts expand.
Our “Give Away the Plate” recipient for November 2019 is The Philadelphia Center.
Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service. Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.

The church currently hosts a variety of activities, including Sunday services, adult and children’s religious education, Eastern meditation, yoga, and more.
All Souls is proud to be a Welcoming Congregation (a Unitarian Universalist denominational program for congregations that have done additional study and discernment around issues related to bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender equality).
Your donation helps maintain and improve All Souls. Thanks in advance for your donation.
In accordance with the Bylaws of our church and as Secretary of the Board, I hereby announce that All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church will hold a Congregational Meeting in the sanctuary.

Childcare provided.
It’s also that time to turn in your pledge for 2019.
Please turn in your pledge forms no later than this Sunday (9 December 2018) so that the Finance Committee can prepare a budget to present at the Congregational Meeting on 16 December 2018.

Please join us on Sunday (23 December 2018) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class.
We will be watching “Bono and Eugene Peterson: The Psalms.”
The inspiration for this delightful short film started with a thank you note: a video thank you note from noted philanthropist and U2 lead singer Bono to Biblical scholar Eugene Peterson for his modern translation of the Bible (The Message).
Bono, a committed Christian, was particularly moved by Peterson’s translation of the Psalms and this correspondence ultimately resulted in a meeting for the two of them and an afternoon of discussion that is deep, moving, and hilarious — sometimes all at the same time.
In accordance with the Bylaws of our church, and as Secretary of the Board, I hereby announce that All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church will hold a congregational meeting in the sanctuary.

Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service. Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.
Come join us this Saturday evening (16 February 2019) at 7:00 PM for a party to mourn Jeff Gauger’s leaving and to celebrate his time among us.
In the short time Jeff has been here at All Souls, he has served on the board, sung in the choir, preached a sermon, and has done spoken word pieces for Artist Sunday and for our recent New Year’s service.
We are sad to lose him from the church and from the community, but this is our chance to let him know how much we appreciate him!
Bring a snack to share (think “heavy hors d’oeuvres”) and whatever you’d like to drink.
We’ll have some beer, wine, water, lemonade, and coffee available, but more and different options will be welcome.
To help with setup, cleanup, or any aspect of the party, contact Bennett Upton at 318-553-7321.

Please join us on Sunday (17 February 2019) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class for an overview of yesterday’s (16 February 2019) Together Louisiana’s statewide leadership meeting in Alexandria along with an invitation to participate with Northern and Central Louisiana Interfaith and Together Louisiana during the upcoming legislative session and the 2019 and 2020 election cycles.
Our Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) affiliate organizations provide us with the opportunity for the kind of active citizenship for which voting is just the first step and we are able to accomplish more through these partnerships than we could ever do as one congregation.
Come and learn more about what we’re doing and how you can join in.

Please join us on Sunday (24 February 2019) at 9:00 AM for our adult religious education class (please note the earlier start time for this Sunday only).
We’re starting early this Sunday for the opportunity to hear from one of the most powerful and prophetic voices of our time — Rev. Dr. William Barber II (leader of the modern Poor People’s Campaign and Repairers of the Breach).
We will view the video of his address to the Peace and Justice Summit of the Equal Justice Initiative.
Please join us on Sunday (24 February 2019) at 11:00 AM for “Parsing the Paradox of Peace” by Rev. Barbara Jarrell
Beginning this season’s focus on peace, social justice, and the interdependent web, we honor our second principle (“justice, equity, and compassion in human relations)” our sixth principle, “the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all, ” and our seventh principle (“respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part”).
A newcomer session will follow the service. This is a time to view a video from the UUA, to tell us a little of your own story, if you are willing, and to ask any questions you might have about our congregation or about Unitarian Universalism. Childcare will be provided.
Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service. Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.
This March 2019, Noel Food Pantry is requesting:
Buy one or more of any or all of these items, bring them in a bag (any color bag) on Sunday and place your bag in the hatch of the green Kia Soul that will be parked out front.
JoDel Adkins will take the food to Noel on Monday when she volunteers there.
Please join us on Sunday (3 March 2019) at 11:00 AM for “Justice and U(U)s” by Rev. Barbara Jarrell.
Continuing this season’s focus on peace, social justice, and the interdependent web, what is ours to do as Unitarian Universalists in the effort to bend the moral arc of the universe toward justice?
In this season of our church year, we honor our second principle (“justice, equity, and compassion in human relations”), our sixth principle (“the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all”), and our seventh principle (“respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part”).
Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service. Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.
Please join us on Saturday (9 March 2019) from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM for our monthly building and grounds work day.
Most of the work for our church home is done by us — the members and friends of All Souls.
Weather permitting — we’ll have tasks both outdoors and indoors.
But rain or shine, we’ll have jobs for all ages and abilities.
Come join us for the whole time, or just an hour or so if that’s all the time you have. Every little bit helps.
Can’t stay this Saturday — consider dropping off some snacks for the work crew.
Please join us on Sunday (10 March 2019) from 11:00 AM for “Growing Justice” by Rev. Barbara Jarrell.
We are continuing this season’s focus on peace, social justice, and the interdependent web.

We will have a new member signing ceremony as part of this worship service. Please join us and welcome our new members.
Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service. Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.
Please join us on Sunday (17 March 2019) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class.
This morning, we will watch a video of a TED Talk by Robb Willer — “How to Have Better Political Conversations.”
As a social psychologist, Willer has some ideas on how moral values might serve to bridge the ideological divide as opposed to widening it, and how we might talk to each other in ways that better promote mutual understanding.
Join us for the viewing and discussion.
Please join us on Sunday (17 March 2019) at 11:00 AM for “Dwelling in Peace … because It Matters” by Rev. Barbara Jarrell.
An important part of the task at hand is to learn how we speak with each other — and more importantly — how we listen to each other within our own walls.
Without this practice, we stand little chance of doing so in the wider world.
We are continuing this season’s focus on peace, social justice, and the interdependent web.
In this season of our church year, we honor our second principle (“justice, equity, and compassion in human relations”), our sixth principle (“the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all”) and our seventh principle (“respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part”).
Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service. Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.
We are having a plant sale at All Souls — here are the dates and hours:
If the plants are not sold out this weekend, we will extend the sale to next Saturday and Sunday (30-31 March 2019)
The sale features a wide selection of native plants, herbs, perennials, vegetable seedlings, and more. We are also selling yard art and raffle tickets.
All proceeds from the plant sale benefit All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church.
Please join us on Sunday (24 March 2019) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class. Today’s class topic is “It’s Not Feminism if It’s Not Intersectional.”
Even as we express our gratitude for everything that first and second wave feminists have accomplished, we can still take the time to unpack the critique that these movements were largely for the benefit of white cisgender women (whether intentionally or obliviously).
History suggests a bit of both and both are symptoms of white privilege.
What does feminism mean today and who is at the table? Join us.
Please join us on Sunday (24 March 2019) at 11:00 AM for “Celebration of Women: Still Angry” by Melissa Gibson with help from Kathaleen Pittman and Loretta Casteen.
It is Women’s History Month across the nation and Celebration of Women Week in Shreveport-Bossier.
Join us to welcome All Souls member and local activist Melissa Gibson as we celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of those who’ve gone before and recommit ourselves for the great work that is still ahead.
Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service. Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.
We are having a second weekend for our plant sale at All Souls — here are the dates and hours:
The sale features a wide selection of native plants, herbs, perennials, vegetable seedlings, and more. We are also selling yard art and raffle tickets.
All proceeds from the plant sale benefit All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church.
Please join us on Sunday (31 March 2019) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class. We will have a presentation on “Spread the Vote” with Candice Battiste (Director of Spread the Vote Louisiana).
Spread the Vote is a national organization that empowers and educates voters and also helps them to obtain the necessary state photo IDs to exercise their voting rights and participate in many other basic, daily activities of citizenship that many of us take for granted.
From the Louisiana Spread the Vote Facebook page:
Without ID it is almost impossible to obtain legal employment, to find housing, or even needed medical care. At Spread The Vote + Project ID , we work every day to help the most vulnerable members of our communities obtain the little card that changes lives.
Please join us on Sunday (31 March 2019) at 11:00 AM for “A Seat at the Table” by Lee Jeter.
Join us as we welcome back Lee Jeter (Executive Director of the Fuller Center for Housing of Northwest Louisiana). He is one of our most requested guest speakers.
His message of empowerment and inclusion will be taken from Luke 14:10 in the Bible.
This is our monthly “Give Away the Plate Sunday” and the Fuller Center will be the recipient of this Sunday’s non-pledge collection. Remember that if you only bring one check, you can indicate on the memo line the proportions allotted to All Souls and the Fuller Center.
Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service. Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.

Please join us on Sunday (7 April 2019) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class — “Intersectionality Part II: Camp L’eau Est La Vie.”
US citizens affected by contaminated air, water, and soil are disproportionately black, brown, and poor.
As we kick off Faith Climate Action Week, we look at issues of environmental justice locally, statewide, nationally, and globally, with particular attention to the Bayou Bridge pipeline protests in South Louisiana.
Please join us on Sunday (7 April 2019) at 11:00 AM for our Faith Climate Action Week Service with Frances Kelley.
We are delighted to welcome activist and organizer Frances Kelley back to our pulpit this morning as we celebrate Faith Climate Action Week.
A past winner of All Souls’ Emerson Award, Frances was the director for the massive campaign that defeated the planned open burning of toxic waste at nearby Camp Minden.
She has organized locally for the national 350.org movement and — in addition to various environmental issues — has worked on women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, and various election campaigns.
Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service. Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.
And this Sunday will be the last day for our spring plant sale.
