Online Adult Religious Education β€” 2 May 2021

2 May 2021 at 02:51

Please join us on Sunday (2 May 2021) at 9:00 AM for our adult religious education class via Zoom.

We will resume our White Fragility book study group with Susan Caldwell and Barbara Deger (using the book by Robin DiAngelo).

This week we will concentrate on Chapter 5 — “The Good/Bad Binary.”

White people often buy into the notion that “since only bad people are racist, and I am a good person, I have no complicity in racism and no responsibility to work on dismantling it.”

How do we move away from that kind of thinking into a more constructive mindset?

We have one additional copy of this book available if anyone else needs a copy.Β  And we can also order more if needed.

What Now? Living the 8th Principle: Revisiting Covenant with Susan Caldwell and Barbara Deger.

In December 2020, we celebrated our congregational ratification of the Eighth Principle.Β  We noted at the time that the language of this principle holds us accountable to the work of dismantling systemic racism and white supremacy culture.

This Sunday, we will take a look at our congregational covenant of right relations.

In many ways, it’s an excellent covenant created through a thoughtful and thorough process facilitated by thoughtful and thorough people.

We have no need to scrap it — but as always — we don’t know what we don’t know.

Our goal here is to look at our covenant through an anti-racist lens, and see where our language may have unintentionally upheld white supremacy culture.

This is how we “honor the intent, own the impact.”

Beginning on Sunday, 28 March 2021, we will begin a study of the book White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo.

Susan Caldwell will be ordering books for the class for all who request them and is happy to include you in the order whether you attend the class or do not attend (of course we’d love for you to attend the class).
