What Were You Thinking? - sermon only - West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church

14 July 2019 at 15:56

by Worship Associate Gerry Meader

We will explore mindfulness and some of the ways in which we accept ideas without the benefit of any serious intellectual rigor. How do we come to accept “truth” when real evidence doesn’t exist, or when the “evidence” is misleading? And how might these precarious beliefs affect our commitment to social justice or our world view?

'FRIEND TO FOE AND BACK AGAIN' - A sermon by Yadenee Hailu - All Souls Unitarian Church

21 July 2019 at 15:00
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 21, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Yadenee Hailu, Assistant Minister. DESCRIPTION This summer I had the honor of co-chairing the Right Relationship Team at General Assembly in Spokane and visiting my family in Ethiopia. My role changed drastically in these two locations, but I found a unique trend that wove the contrasting trips together. I could speak in great lengths about my love of the UU church or my roots in Ethiopia. However that would be much less helpful than the real, vulnerable, gritty, messy, tiring work of honestly engaging one's communities' shadow sides and all. What posture can aid us in maneuvering the inevitable embarrassment of not the 'other' but how our own community acts? Let's unpack our responsibility in holistic engagement with our friends turned foe. *Music: Booker Gillespie (vocals) & Myron Oliver (saxophone) with David B. On Sunday, July 28, at our 10 a.m. service, we considered the notion of naming. Who has the opportunity to name someone or something? Whose has that authority? Who has the power to name? And, whose names really matter? You can listen to the sermon from that service here.

'CAN YOU FEEL ME?' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson - All Souls Unitarian Church

28 July 2019 at 15:00
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 28, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION "Just walk a mile in his moccasins. Before you abuse, criticize and accuse. If just for one hour, you could find a way. To see through his eyes, instead of your own muse." —Excerpt from Judge Softly, Mary Lathrap, 1895  An early form of trade was to barter, trading goods or services without the use of money. What are the values and virtues you trade that don't involve money and that you consider more valuable than money? Virtue has value that money cannot buy or pay for. Compassion is identifying with the pain or passion of someone else and tends to go deeper than love—love cares, but doesn't always feel. Nothing enhances relationships more than allowing compassion to be the primary virtue that buoys and buttresses our connection to the social, moral, and spiritual base and balance of community.  SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/VyLA5aveZYY SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

'MOVING IN A FORWARDLY DIRECTION' - A message by Laurel Carbone (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

28 July 2019 at 16:30
The message was delivered on Sunday, July 28, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Laurel Carbone, Congregant, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Everyone has failed at some point in their life. Failure can be demoralizing, but it doesn't have to be where we stay. If we ask ourselves to keep moving forward, we're honest with ourselves and others, and we handle ourselves with grace, we can move into a place of healing. There will be people and societal messages along the way that work against your progress, but there will also be helpers. Always look for the helpers, and where you can, be a helper. Laurel will share her journey of moving from an abusive childhood to being a felon in prison to being a licensed attorney. (Comments regarding her abusive childhood will be kept brief and only used to provide context.) *Music: Sarah Maud, soloist; Jordan Hehl, bass; Matt Edwards, drums; Rick Fortner, piano. Ministerial intern Lee Legault's sermon delivered on July 28, 2019. She asks what wisdom can we glean from the Harry Potter books on how to partner with our youth. The Harry Potter myth offers insight into the role of youth in social justice movements. How has Unitarian Universalism supported the unique charisma of our young people?

'WHO'S A HERETIC?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar - All Souls Unitarian Church

11 August 2019 at 15:00
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, August 11, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Our church is being seen on “the big screen” in theaters across the country in the feature documentary, 'American Heretics: The Politics of the Gospel'. It’s certainly nothing new for Unitarians and Universalists to be accused of heresy for embracing a scientific and evolutionary worldview and for asking questions about doctrines that are considered unquestionable by some. Yet, as one watches the film the question arises “Who are the heretics in this story?” The folks who tend to call progressive religious thinkers “heretics” are shown to have strayed quite far from the foundations of Christianity. In the spirit of our summer series, Trading Places, I will explore what it’s like to be on both sides of the heresy debate. I like to think if Jesus were to come back today he would feel more welcome at All Souls than at a lot of the churches that believe they are waiting for and working for Him. Whether you are a Humanist, a Buddhist, Jewish, UU, a progressive Christian or none of the above, you will find yourself in this story.   SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/LBJwxANgzbM SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

Beauty and the Butterfly - West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church

18 August 2019 at 20:16

by Reverend Anthony Makar

Author, poet, and civil rights activist Maya Angelou once said, “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” We explore some of these changes in Maya Angelou’s amazing life, across a span of almost 90 years

β€œWhat’s in a name?” Blessing and Prophecy - Unitarian Universalist Church of Charlotte

19 August 2019 at 11:26
Minister, Eve Stevens and Lay Service Leader, Tracy Hickman explored the ways patriarchy shapes the naming of women. We examined the ways ideas about women are passed down through naming-traditions and how women navigate the subliminal and direct messages they receive through their names. You can listen to the sermon from that service here or watch the entire service on our website or Youtube page.

What does that pin on your backpack mean? - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

21 August 2019 at 16:37
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on August 18, 2019. All-Ages Service. Who are we as UU's? Our children in schools need to know who we are. In their classes we say the 7 principles and the classroom covenants they wrote at the very beginning. This is not a non-denominational church. It is a church with strong roots in Central Europe and in New England. Unitarians shaped this country in mostly good ways. How did Unitarianism take shape?

A Spiritual Perspective on Alzheimer’s - West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church

25 August 2019 at 20:53

by Reverend Anthony Makar and

Michael Miller

Worship Associate

Worldwide, there are approximately 50 million people with Alzheimer’s, and the ripple effects of this mean that millions of more lives of family, friends, and others have been impacted. It’s a difficult journey, but one that contains many lessons for UUs of all ages about human dignity, the nature of caregiving, and the depths of human devotion and love.

'KEEP HOPE ALIVE' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson - All Souls Unitarian Church

1 September 2019 at 15:00
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 1, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION How should we try to relate to what feels totally “other?” Can black or ethnic “under-privilege” relate to white privilege, and vice versa? Does the Trading Places idea work in such a setting? How about humanist mindsets with super-human mindsets? Something is futile when it becomes incapable of producing any useful result—it’s pointless. We mustn’t allow any situation to reduce our hopes to such a state. In the words of Jessie Jackson, we must “keep hope alive.’” Thomas Edison said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” Here at All Souls, we aim to make it work best for all of us. Bad at Meditation - West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church

by Christine Salontay and

Vicky Warden

Worship Associates

“I can’t stop thinking.” “Am I doing this right?” “There is no way I can sit still that long” “This is boring.” We spend most of our lives lost in thoughts. And although there is a growing body of scientific evidence that strongly suggests meditation is another important pillar of wellness, why is it so hard to get ourselves to spend a few minutes each day meditating? This Sunday, explore why meditation can be so difficult but how sticking with a meditation practice can have life long benefits.

Many Rivers to Cross - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

3 September 2019 at 04:00
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on September 1, 2019. Annual Water Ceremony: We bring water from a place that has fed our souls and spirits over the summer months and mingle these waters together to remind us of our connection to one another. In connections with friends, family, work mates and church members there is both joy and learning. How do we find ease and joy as we cross the rivers that present themselves?

'ONE COMMUNITY, MANY PATHS' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Traditional Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

8 September 2019 at 15:00
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 8, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Some people want to understand how Humanists and Naturalists, Christians, Jews and Buddhists and people of multiple faiths and philosophies have created such a vibrant congregation together in the heart of the Bible Belt. It’s not always easy to explain, but I’ll give it a go on Sunday. It seems as if humanity is at a spiritual crossroads in which one fork leads to more fear and division and the other leads to more love and greater cooperation. In an effort to grow love and cooperation All Souls has discovered that in a pluralistic society different spiritual languages and styles of services are helpful to various people to open doors to an experience of wholeness and love beyond belief. With our summer series over, All Souls returns this week to three Sunday services. Each service provides a different spiritual language and style and yet in their own ways each lifts up enduring wisdom and offers love beyond belief. In whichever style or language, a primary aim of All Souls is to freely cultivate compassion, courage and connection in individuals and the human family. There will be a children’s story at the Traditional Service at 10:00 am. If you’ve been gone over the summer, Welcome Home! Making the World More Beautiful - West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church

8 September 2019 at 17:40

by Reverend Anthony Makar and

Reverend Chris Long

Gerry Meader

Worship Associate

Now that school has started again, and we have returned from summer travels away or “staycations” in Cleveland, we come home to West Shore and begin a new program year. Our multigenerational service draws from the classic story “Miss Rumphius” by Barbara Cooney. Here’s a short excerpt: In the evening Alice sat on her grandfather’s knee and listened to his stories of faraway places. When he had finished, Alice would say, “When I grow up, I too will go to faraway places, and when I am old, I too will live beside the sea.” “That is all very well, little Alice,” said her grandfather, “but there is a third thing you must do.” “What is that?” asked Alice. “You must do something to make the world more beautiful,” said her grandfather. “All right,” said Alice. But she didn’t know what that could be. What might you do to make the world more beautiful? Let’s explore this together as we usher in a new program year at West Shore

What We Hold Most Dear: Exploring and Integrating our Individual and Collective Spirituality - Unitarian Universalist Church of Charlotte

9 September 2019 at 10:47
This Sunday, we introduced our 2019-20 focus: “What We Hold Most Dear: Exploring and Integrating our Individual and Collective Spirituality.” Mindful that our Vision challenges us toward “spiritual transformation,” we’ll consider what that might mean, exploring possibilities with imagination and with open minds and hearts. We’ll offer services, classes, and other experiences that will ask each of us to reflect on “what we hold most dear” while also reflecting on “what we hold most dear” collectively.

'THE FOOLISH WISDOM OF FAITH' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Traditional Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

15 September 2019 at 15:00
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 15, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Third Sunday Throwback Sermon Series: Beginning in September, once a month, the ministers are selecting sermons from the historic ministers of All Souls and giving them new life by reworking them with their contemporary perspective for living in the 21st century. As All Souls approaches its 100th year, we will be offering a special “throwback” message at the Traditional service on the 3rd Sunday of each month. In the coming year, come hear the words of John Wolf, Brent Smith, Robert Sonen, Suzanne Meyers, Alfred Von Stilli, and other luminaries, who shepherded this religiously liberal church through some of the most significant events of the 20th century. Find out what they were saying then and what it means for us today. --------------------------------------------- On the third Sunday in September in 1955, Rev. Robert W. Sonen (All Souls Sr. Minster 1944-1959) delivered a powerful sermon from the All Souls pulpit titled, “The Foolish Wisdom of Faith”. Kicking off the new Third Sunday Throwback Sermon Series, I will deliver a version of his message updated with a contemporary perspective and my own thinking on the subject. Rev. Sonen is known as one of the best preachers who served as Senior Minister of All Souls. In this message he takes up the topic of faith and why we lose our faith and what kinds of faith we are smart to maintain. Even in 1955, the concept of faith was controversial in a Unitarian church. It was the same year that the first McDonalds was opened; Chuck Berry recorded his first song; Emit Till was murdered; Dwight Eisenhower was the president, and a few months later, in December, Rosa Parks was arrested on a bus in Montgomery.   SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/UWVOB7kLG7U SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

'WHEN THINGS FALL APART' - A message by Rev. Barbara Prose (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

15 September 2019 at 16:30
The message was delivered on Sunday, September 15, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION What do you do when things are falling apart? Forests burning in the Amazon and hurricanes blowing through and up from the Bahamas, stir up our anxieties and awaken our fears. Learning how to stay present with our emotions is one way to weather the storms of our times and our personal lives. When we accept that there’s no place to run to, we can learn to stay present to what is, and find freedom and joy in the here and now. Growing Up. Growing Old. Growing True. - West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church

15 September 2019 at 21:23

by Reverend Anthony Makar with

Reverend Chris Long,

Layne Richard-Hammock

Director of Lifespan Faith Development and

Marty Blachly-Cross

Worship Associate

Today, we begin a new year of religious education classes, and that means we begin again the powerful work of supporting the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth of our children and youth. But what does it mean to grow? Rev. Makar shares a story about his Baba (that’s Ukranian for “grandmother”) and, through it, explores three dimensions of the growing journey as it impacts all ages.

Faithful Expectation - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

16 September 2019 at 14:11
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on September 15, 2019. Our religious values are aspirational expressions of our highest expectations for ourselves. Expectations can provide powerful inspiration and help us live out our Unitarian Universalist faith and reach for our best selves. So too though, sometimes the unexpected and letting go of expectations that are not serving us well can also bring enrichment to our lives. We will explore the intricacies and paradoxical nature of expectation.
