It’s important that we keep talking about the ways that privilege show up in our communities, making some opportunities accessible to some people. Privilege and power stifle the lives of those who have none.β€Œ

How can we continue to use empathy to take action to change systems founded in privilege and unequal access to power?

The UU Congregation of the Susquehanna Valley UUCSVPA turned attendees into active participants for an MLK Day service. The UUCSVPA took on a unique approach to make their services more interactive. Based on an architectural model of Buckminster Fuller, congregants built a physical declaration of their resolutions to impact societal issues they care about in small, concrete ways.

This project was a great way to provide valuable guidance on how to tackle justice issues as a congregation collectively. What a fun and interactive activity for congregants of all ages!

Advocating for older adults in long-term care: My calling, my journey, my ministry

β€œAdvocacy is hard work. It takes strength in adversity, perseverance in disappointment. My parents prepared me for this work in many ways, every day. Their example taught me to be strong. My faith lifted me up.”

In Kathy Bradley’s s personal experience with navigating the complexities of caregiving relying on her Presbyterian faith, we are reminded caregiving is a gift of love and compassion to another, but it is also a privilege, giving both the caregiver and the one who receives care a chance to explore unknown territory together.

As President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray's term winds down in the coming months, the UUA will be sharing content to honor her legacy and contributions to our faith movement. We can’t wait to lift up the beautiful and inspiring pastoral and prophetic messages she’s offered us over these past six years.

We are so grateful for the leadership she’s brought to the UUA, which has guided and nurtured our UU community. This was support we could count on even on the heels of a time of turmoil and change in Unitarian Universalism, and then in an especially fraught period of uncertainty and injustice in the larger world.

We hope you’ll join in, too. In the coming weeks, please tag us or use #SFGlegacy when you share your favorite memories of President Susan. Follow along for our #SFGLegacy campaign.

We begin our storytelling with a recent UU World interview, β€œLeadership in Unprecedented Times": https://bit.ly/3lzsXq2

Why Unitarian Universalists are Reexamining Article II

The Article II Study Commission recently presented its proposed changes to the section of the Unitarian Universalist Association’s bylaws that includes the Principles, Purposes, and Sources. Carey McDonald, executive vice president of the Unitarian Universalist Association, spoke to UU World about the revision process.

McDonald reminds us that the UUA bylaws mandate a regular revision process of Article II every fifteen years. The language in Article II lives in the UUA bylaws and has been revised a number of times over the course of the Unitarian Universalist Association’s history:

β€œWe are a living tradition, which means regularly reviewing and asking ourselves: Does the Article II core language reflect who we are now and who we want to be? β€œ

These proposed changes require that people spend time with this new language and think about what it really means. The changes are supposed to reflect their experience and capture what being a UU means to you.

How to align your faith and work

UUA Executive Vice President Carey McDonald recently shared his insights with Quartz about navigating faith and its unique point of intersection between life and work.

An ethic of love lives at the heart of our UU faith. It reflects the core question, β€œHow are we to live?”

Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray reminds us β€œIt calls us to courage to continually grow and learn and adapt in ways that foster love and justice. It is not a weak or sentimental love. It burns like the fire at the center of our chalice. It’s fierce in a way that compels us to demand justice in our world, but also fierce in how it calls us to courageous conversations, to radical practices of welcome, compassion, forgiveness, and belonging.”

We know that we cannot do this work alone. As UUs, we understand that we are part of the interdependent web of all creation. We belong to each other and this knowledge fuels our faithful commitment to unwaveringly fight for justice; to unwaveringly fight for each other.

From the UUA President: Tennessee Teaches Us We Cannot Normalize Authoritarianism. We Must Protect Democracy.

The three State Representatives that the Tennessee House of Representatives sought to punish are not only exercising their own right to free speech, they are channeling their constituents’ anger, concern, and desire to act in favor of gun safety. They are representing the will of the people of their districts. In a very real sense, expelling them is not just meant to silence the individuals – it is also meant to punish and disenfranchise the people for which they speak.

As Unitarian Universalists, our religious tradition and our Principles affirm the inherent worth and dignity of every person, and the right of conscience and the use of the democratic process in society at large. This means not only calling out acts of racism and authoritarianism, it means working to actively organize for justice and equity for all people, and mobilizing to protect and expand democracy.

We express our full solidarity with the constituents who may have lost their voice in the Tennessee House this week but are finding ways to express their need for justice and change. We offer our support to the civil rights leaders, the young people, the faith community, and all who are mobilizing against this injustice in Tennessee.

β€œEnvironmental degradation is exacerbating existing inequities; we have a moral obligation to center solutions on those most impacted.

How can UUs respond? Sometimes the best thing to do is slow down and reflect before jumping into an action without centering those most impacted. Examine your community. How has systemic oppression been locked in for people of color? Was yours a sundown town or county? Which neighborhoods were redlined? What treaties were violated when your community was established? Whose land are you on? How have immigrant communities been treated? Go as far back as you can, then scan up to modern times. Consider: in the event of a climate disaster, which of your neighbors might lose their homes?”

While the current Principles and Sources are cherished by many, Miller wants UUs to understand that they are neither sacred nor mystical texts. β€œThey were not given on tablets on a mountaintop. They emerged from a small group of dedicated UUs in living memory, with tremendous input from UU church members, church leaders, congregational meetings, and clergy,” she says. β€œHow glad I am to see these core statements and values being widely examined once again!”

β€œThis is participatory theology. It is inclusive and alive. I am hopeful that we will, together, forge a new statement for these times.”

Tools to help UUs thwart anti-transgender bills and attacks β€” Side With Love

Our friends at Side with Love have developed a new resource to help Unitarian Universalists and UU congregations live into their values affirming the inherent worth and dignity of all people and taking action to oppose legislation that dehumanizes the LGBTQIA+ community.

With guidance for writing effective letters to the editor and letters to government officials, this new toolkit can help make an impact by amplifying the truth that the majority of Americans oppose legislation limiting the rights of transgender people and support nondiscrimination protections for the LGBTQ+ community.

We can all do something. Join us in taking action today: https://bit.ly/3nsh2va

In honor of Earth Day, we are continuing to highlight our favorite UU World climate justice issues.

This 2020 documentary tells the story of Juliana v. United States, a landmark piece of climate litigation brought by a determined group of young plaintiffs suing the federal government over climate inaction.

Levi Draheim, a 14-year-old Unitarian Universalist from Florida, is the youngest plaintiff in the case and appears throughout the documentary.

The intimate footage also serves as an impactful reminderβ€”both inspiring and heartbreakingβ€”that these are children who felt compelled to take on this Herculean fight because their government has failed again and again to protect them.

Lizzo brings drag queens on stage, protesting Tennessee law

In light of all that is happening with the Tennessee legislature, we share a story from April that brings us much hope and joy. In a concert on April 21st in Knoxville, TN, Lizzo filled the stage with drag queens in a glittery protest against the state’s efforts to restrict drag performances in public.

Lizzo believes, β€œWhy would I not come to the people who need to hear this message the most?” β€œWhy would I not create a safe space in Tennessee where we can celebrate drag entertainers and celebrate our differences?”

As Unitarian Universalists, we know we must call out acts of racism and authoritarianism, and we must also uplift those who are actively organizing for justice and equity for all people. We support Lizzo!

Religious Educators Lead a Return to Community

UU religious educators are searching for the kind of community events and outreach that will stitch unraveled connections back together and offer families the spiritual support they need to navigate post-shutdown life.

Dayna Edwards, minister of faith formation at Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Bethesda, MD has found it effective to lean into community events that were canceled or pared down in recent years, like Cedar Lane’s annual holiday craft day.

Correna Ness, director of religious exploration at the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg, PA worked together with congregants to restructure popular events like an annual auction to make them more multigenerational and financially accessible to all.

We are so grateful for all that lay and credentialed religious educators do to guide and serve our Unitarian Universalist communities.

Trans, Nonbinary+ Lives and Democracy are at Risk: UUs Unequivocally Defend Justice

As Unitarian Universalists, we are clear and unequivocal: LGBTQIA+ people are sacred, whole, and divine. We unapologetically welcome LGBTQIA+ people, children and families to our communities.

The recent attacks on transgender people, activists, and their allies in Texas, Montana and across the United States serve as continued evidence of the dangerous escalation by some in political power and their supporters to target transgender and nonbinary+ children and adults. Unitarian Universalists will continue to support and work with the LGBTQIA+ community β€” and siblings within our congregations and the wider world β€” to ensure their fundamental rights are protected.

Imagine it's 2050 and we've achieved all of our wildest hopes for climate justice...what does it look like? The abolitionist movement imagines a future without police and prisons, drawing on deep convictions, faith, imagination, and hope to do so. The climate justice movement is diverse, vibrant, and equally hopeful: but do we UUs have a vision of what a just climate future is?

Join Side with Love for this radical gathering of thinkers for abolitionist visions of climate justice. Facilitated by Rachel Myslivy, Rev. Dr. SofΓa Betancourt, Dr. Rashid Shaikh, and Antoinette Scully.

To aid with the visioning, this event will incorporate the use of 'rich picture' process to help us imagine our communities in this future. We hope this panel will inspire and ground all of us in the promise of the world we yearn for. Register here:https://bit.ly/3ojfFzw
