2023 UUA Presidential Election

UUA Secretary Bill Young has announced that a referendum election on the Rev. Dr. Sofรญa Betancourtโ€™s nomination will be held this year. Rev. Dr. Betancourt was nominated by the UUA Presidential Search Committee on November 15, 2022 and accepted the nomination. As previously announced, a second candidate identified by the Presidential Search Committee did not accept the nomination.

From December 1, 2022 through February 1, 2023 there was a period where individuals were able to become a candidate for UUA President by receiving petition signatures from fifty congregations in three regions of the Association. As of the petition deadline on February 1, no petitions were submitted.

Learn more about the 2023 UUA Presidential election process, including upcoming regional forums where members and delegates can learn more about Rev. Dr. Betancourt, on our website: https://bit.ly/3hm3Cy6.

From the UUA President: Holding Tyre Nichols and Black Communities in Love and Prayer

We hold the family of Tyre Nichols in our love and prayers in this time of devastating grief and loss. In June 2020 we denounced โ€œthe inherent violence of policing. Three years later, we continue to be confronted with these truths about systemic brutality.

Policing and law enforcement continues to be fundamentally brokenโ€”we need a system that recognizes the humanity of all people at its foundation. The death of Tyre Nichols is a reminder that violence faced by Black people at the hands of law enforcement continues to be pervasive.

As UUs, we are in solidarity with the Black leaders, organizers, and community members fighting for justice and for the systematic changes that will end police violence. This is an urgent moral crisis. We need to fundamentally reimagine public safety. We must take action now.

Article II Study Commission Report to UUA Board of Trustees

Two years ago, the UUA Board appointed a commission of Unitarian Universalists to integrate various grassroots conversations about changes to the Principles and lead a discernment process for the whole Association to review Article II of our Bylaws. From presentations and input at General Assembly to more than 10,000 survey responses, to over 4,600 participants in their feedback sessions, the Article II Study Commission listened and shaped an Article II that has the potential to lead us farther along the path of living our aspirations faithfully within and beyond our UU community.

We are so grateful for all that UUs do to move our living tradition forward. Please download, watch and share this video with your congregation or community today: https://bit.ly/3X41lGN

This is an important time in our democratically-governed living tradition and we need everyone's participation.

From the UUA President: We Mourn With The People of Monterey Park

Our hearts mourn for the people of the community in Monterey Park.

It does not have to be this way. Our leaders must act. Unitarian Universalists are ready to work with elected and community officials to support responsible gun legislation measures.

Fundamental to who we are as UUs are the beliefs in the inherent worth and dignity of every person and the goals of peace, liberty and justice for all. These core values are part of the Seven Principles that every UU community affirms. We mourn with the people of Monterey Park and we remain in solidarity with the AAPI community across this nation.

Too many American communities can relate to the grief that Monterey Park is experiencing because they, too, have experienced lives lost to gun violence.

On this anniversary of #RoeVWade, the landscape has changed precipitously since the Supreme Court reversed 50 years of precedent last June with the Dobbs v. Jackson decision.

As UUs, we have an ongoing moral obligation to support comprehensive reproductive care, because reproductive care is healthcare. We know that such care is essential to the well-being and safety of individuals and families. On this 50th anniversary, we reaffirm our commitment โ€“ our faithful religious commitment โ€“ to supporting Reproductive Justice on behalf of women and pregnant people across this country.

We share with you a statement from Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray, president of the UUA, regarding the 50th anniversary.

"Unitarian Universalists remain committed to Reproductive Justice. Since the Dobbs decision in June 2022, we have helped to organize ballot initiatives to protect access to abortion and provided trainings on organizing for Reproductive Justice for congregations. Across the country, UUs are working within their communities to help promote Reproductive Justice and protect access to reproductive care. We know that this work will be ongoing for years to come and we are dedicated to doing it."

Religious leaders sue to overturn Missouriโ€™s abortion ban

Ahead of Sundayโ€™s 50th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, a group of clergy members announced a new lawsuit challenging Missouriโ€™s abortion bans.

The Rev. Krista Taves, who serves as a minister at Eliot Unitarian Chapel in Kirkwood and First Unitarian Church in Alton, is one of the thirteen plaintiffs on this lawsuit.

Since well before Roe v. Wade, Unitarian Universalists have declared unequivocally that we support every personโ€™s right to make decisions about their own bodies and reproductive health. We are so grateful for the role that UU's continue to play in the fight for reproductive justice.

Read about the lawsuit here:https://bit.ly/3iTbxUq

They argue the law violates the Missouri Constitution, which bars state government from establishing preferences for any faith.

Another atmospheric river bears down on waterlogged California, but storms are weakening

There was a time that Californians desperately needed rain, something to quench the climate-change-fueled drought. Unfortunately, the water from the storms are now surging over riverbanks, disrupting power lines, rushing through communities, toppling trees, and creating avalanches of mud.

Should we give up flying for the sake of the climate?

โ€œWhile giving up flying can feel like a choice to curb your own freedom, travel and the opportunity to experience different cultures, its increasing role in climate change is putting many of our most cherished environments at risk.โ€

The Waiting Time

As we close out 2022, we offer you this message from Braver Wiser.

"This year, we might not feel like waiting is the best move. We may cry out in lament for lives and rights taken without account, joining our voices with all who cry for justice and peace. This year, sitting quietly in the midst of chaos might feel close to impossible.

Finding the magic in this season of waiting can be difficult for many of usโ€”not just this year, but any year. For how does one sit quietly when life can be so unkind?"

Federal Funding Resources for Nonprofits and Houses of Worship

Join Interfaith Power & Light, the Environmental and Energy Study Institute, the United Church of Christ, United Women in Faith, and the Unitarian Universalist Association for a webinar on how your congregation can access federal grant funds for clean energy improvements!

This virtual event will be on December 8 at 4 pm ET/1 pm PT. Learn how to prepare to apply for Energy Efficiency Materials Pilot Program grants for your congregationโ€™s energy efficiency work.

The IRA opens the way for non-profits and houses of worship to access clean energy funds and tax credits. UU Congregations can now leverage federal funds for energy and resiliency improvements. This is a critical time for people of faith to reduce the impact of our congregational facilities through federal funding opportunities.

Essentials for Lay-Led Congregations

Lay leadership has a long and proud history in Unitarian Universalism. Recent shifts in professional staffing, however, has resulted in more congregations finding themselves in need of strong lay leadership.

UUA Congregational Life staff will hold a virtual convening on Saturday, December 10 from 12pm - 4pm EST to help lay-led congregations connect with each other and connect with new streams of resources from the UUA. Join the convergence!

Humans v nature: our long and destructive journey to the age of extinction

Humanity faces many great challenges and injustices stemming from climate change, environmental racism, and rapid biodiversity decline. As UUs, we know this truth but we do not accept it as a fateful demise โ€” believing instead that a vibrant and sustainable future for all can be achieved through unrelenting collective action grounded in love, equity, and building communities founded in genuine love and care.

Embracing Possibility in Times of Change

With so much change and transition, it can be easy to feel uncertain or anxious, and we can lean on one another for support. Recognizing all the ways we are in transition, our President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray created a sermon exploring how we embrace possibility in times of change.

The sermon is part of a set of WorshipWeb videos for congregations experiencing ministerial transition and grappling with change. Incorporate these videos into your congregation's existing worship culture by sharing individual videos or the whole set.

A significant change in Unitarian Universalism comes through the dedicated work of the UUAโ€™s Article II Study Commission (A2SC). Article II is the section in our UUA bylaws that contains the Purposes, 7 UU Principles, and our Sources.

Charged to review Article II, the Commission held discussions online, at General Assemblies, and with groups of leaders across our Association. This fall, the A2SC incorporated the extensive input they received and developed an initial draft of a new Article II.

You are invited to review the new draft text: https://bit.ly/3u7glaQ

And share your feedback with the Commission online: https://bit.ly/A2FeedbackNov

Please share this important conversation in your congregations and communities!

[LIVE] National Day of Mourning 2022 (November 24, 2022, 12PM ET)

Since 1970, Indigenous people and their allies have gathered at noon EST on Cole's Hill in Plymouth MA to commemorate a National Day of Mourning on the US Thanksgiving holiday. It is a day to mourn, but also a time to feel strength in action.

Thanksgiving Day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of Native people, the theft of Native lands, and the erasure of Native cultures. Participants in National Day of Mourning honor Indigenous ancestors and Native resilience. It is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection, as well as a protest against the racism and oppression that Indigenous people continue to experience worldwide.

United American Indians of New England offers a livestream of the 53rd annual National Day of Mourning. Join in solidarity from wherever you are!

As we come up on Thanksgiving Day, we share with you this message from Amber Ruffin and Native Land.

The UUA is deeply committed to honoring Indigenous peoples and protecting and promoting the heritage and culture of the 573+ tribes of the U.S. And that starts with recognizing that this land was not "discovered".

From the UUA President: Our LGBTQIA+ Siblings are Sacred, Whole and Divine

We are so grateful for the pastoral presence of UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray. She offers this message in response to the tragic shooting inside Club Q in Colorado Springs, Colorado, a nightclub that serves the LGBTQIA+ community.

"Acts of violence against trans people and LGBTQIA+ people are not unrelated to the policy and rhetorical violence that leaders use to target LGBTQIA+ people every day across this country. Policy violence like the anti-trans laws in Alabama, Texas and Ohio incites interpersonal and public acts of violence. This must end.

Our LGBTQIA+ siblings are sacred, whole, and divine. The full expression of the diversity of gender and sexuality is a gift. We share a collective responsibility to build a world that affirms the inherent worth and dignity of all. We can do better. We must do better.

I send my love and care to everyone in our communities impacted by this incident, by violence towards the LGBTQIA+ community, and by attempts to intimidate trans and non-binary individuals."

2022 has been another deadly year for transgender and non-binary people. The barrage of anti-trans legislation that has been levied against the trans/non-binary community along with a culture of hate that is harming our children is directly responsible for these senseless killings and the dangers the transgender community faces on a daily basis.

Our transgender siblings are sacred and divine. Let us honor the inherit worth and dignity of trans people by remembering those weโ€™ve lost and honoring those living among us. Please join Side with Love this Friday, November 18 for a special worship service where we may grieve together, worship together, and recommit to a moving together in solidarity.
