Beacon Behind the Books: Meet Catherine Tung, Editor

3 February 2023 at 08:34
I initially wanted to be a writer, and I also wanted to live in New York, where many of my best friends were already living. In my last semester of college, my thesis advisor mentioned publishing as a possible day jobโ€”an industry that, of course, is also mainly based in New York. After college, I did some internships and freelance work at various New York publishers, magazines, and agencies, and then did an MFA in fiction writing at Brooklyn College, where I studied with author and editor Nathaniel Rich.

John Bates and Rev. Wyn Thomas elected to the Executive Committee

3 February 2023 at 07:11

We are pleased to announce the election of two new members to our Executive Committee: John Bates and Rev. Wyn Thomas. The Executive Committee act as trustees for theย General Assemblyย (GA) andย Nightingale Centreย and work with the Chief Officer and other staff and volunteers to develop and oversee the strategic direction and smooth running of the GA. John was nominated by New Unity CIO and Wyn by Cheltenham & Gloucester Unitarians.

As there were four vacancies on the EC and two candidates, both are elected unopposed and the remaining vacancies may later be filled by co-option.

John Bates is a retired Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at London Business School, with forty yearsโ€™ experience in business and education. He joined Cambridge Unitarians in 1991 and later was a member of Islington Unitarians. John became Chair of New Unity when it was formed in 2015, before stepping down last year.

John says: โ€œI wish to serve on the EC because I want to help more people find the Unitarian way of celebrating and reverencing life, love and community. Our message as Unitarians is right for the times. I feel we need to come together and use our resources of money, buildings, and skilled people towards communicating that message and achieving our agreed goals of love and justice for all.

A challenge for faith-based organisations with deep historical roots is that they can become hostage to their past. Aligning the movementโ€™s resources and capabilities with an agreed goal may require some hard decisions. I can help us make those decisions in a collaborative way, without compromising our spiritual purpose.

We should strive to be greater than the sum of our parts, retaining all the vigour of our diversity and our localised autonomy, whilst working together towards a common vision of growth. I can listen, lead and inspire. I can contribute in strategy, finance and governance, and I understand the legal responsibilities of Charity Trustees. Unitarianism has much to offer the modern world. I would be proud to help the movement grow and thrive today and prepare it for a relevant future.โ€

Rev. Wyn Thomas is a Unitarian minister based in Ceredigion and is Chair of Unitarians Wales. He works as a Complex Case Officer and Engagement Project Leader for Tir Dewi, a Welsh rural support charity.

Wyn says: โ€œAs a lifelong Unitarian, and having served as a minister for 19 years, I am firmly grounded in the Unitarian heritage of which I feel both proud and blessed to have experienced and loved. As a leader in a rural mental health charity, I have seen the practical impact of living our values. I am passionate about developing a vision for the future of our movement. A future where all voices are heard, respected, and appreciated, in keeping with the inclusive embrace of our faith.

Our faith needs to evolve, and I consistently seek opportunities to learn, reflect, and adapt. I firmly believe that as a national movement we must respond to the enormity of the challenges society and our congregations face over the coming years.ย  Within these challenges lie opportunities for renewal and transformation.

I pledge to be honest and open in what are often difficult discussions, and to always welcome diversity of thought, ideas, and experiences in the process. Our Unitarian faith is important โ€“ I believe we have a uniquely valuable contribution to make to the world. Our General Assembly is important โ€“ I will serve it to best of my ability.โ€

2023 UUA Presidential Election

UUA Secretary Bill Young has announced that a referendum election on the Rev. Dr. Sofรญa Betancourtโ€™s nomination will be held this year. Rev. Dr. Betancourt was nominated by the UUA Presidential Search Committee on November 15, 2022 and accepted the nomination. As previously announced, a second candidate identified by the Presidential Search Committee did not accept the nomination.

From December 1, 2022 through February 1, 2023 there was a period where individuals were able to become a candidate for UUA President by receiving petition signatures from fifty congregations in three regions of the Association. From the UUA President: Holding Tyre Nichols and Black Communities in Love and Prayer

We hold the family of Tyre Nichols in our love and prayers in this time of devastating grief and loss. In June 2020 we denounced โ€œthe inherent violence of policing. Three years later, we continue to be confronted with these truths about systemic brutality.

Policing and law enforcement continues to be fundamentally brokenโ€”we need a system that recognizes the humanity of all people at its foundation. The death of Tyre Nichols is a reminder that violence faced by Black people at the hands of law enforcement continues to be pervasive.

As UUs, we are in solidarity with the Black leaders, organizers, and community members fighting for justice and for the systematic changes that will end police violence. This is an urgent moral crisis. We need to fundamentally reimagine public safety. We must take action now.

Read our President's Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray entire statement here:https://bit.ly/3kMGBFM

Reoccurring police violence triggers trauma, anguish and our collective demand for justice.

Article II Study Commission Report to UUA Board of Trustees

Two years ago, the UUA Board appointed a commission of Unitarian Universalists to integrate various grassroots conversations about changes to the Principles and lead a discernment process for the whole Association to review Article II of our Bylaws. From presentations and input at General Assembly to more than 10,000 survey responses, to over 4,600 participants in their feedback sessions, the Article II Study Commission listened and shaped an Article II that has the potential to lead us farther along the path of living our aspirations faithfully within and beyond our UU community.

The failures of mandated reporting
