“Ordinary Days”
Sunday, August 14, 10:50 am, Worship Service Livestream

Life is made up of ordinary days. And they are often some of the best days we have. A sermon musing on the ordinariness of a sweet life.

Retraining the Dragon - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

“Retraining the Dragon”
Sunday, August 7, 10:50 am, Worship Service Livestream

When threatened some of us fight - even "breathing fire" if provoked, others freeze or retreat. We all know life is better when we are not stressed all the time, but some seem more resilient and able to shake off strife and difficulty than others. Recent brain science points to the limbic system as the place filtering our experience and deciding whether to act on a threat or choose to go with the flow of life. Rev. Sonya Sukalski has found that resetting the switch that sends the mind, body and spirit into rest and digest chemistry rather than fight or flight to be a satisfying spiritual practice. Her practice includes elements of prayer, meditation, movement, and employs theology UUs might find useful and life-affirming.

Are We Normal? - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

25 September 2022 at 13:50

“Are We Normal?”
Sunday, September 25, 10:50 am, Worship Service Livestream

What is it about the human condition that is normal? And what is normal anyway? By taking lessons from our time in the pandemic, from my time as a hospital chaplain, and from our collective experiences as humans, we can explore how normal is not a concept to compare ourselves to others, but rather a way to build a shared understanding of what it means to be human. This shared understanding can then be the cornerstone to create a lifespan religious education program.

Good Trouble - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

“Good Trouble”
Sunday, July 31, 10:50 am, Worship Service Livestream

In March of 2020, the late John Lewis called on everyone to "get into good trouble, necessary trouble and redeem the soul of America" as he spoke from the Edmund Pettis bridge in Selma Alabama commemorating the tragedy of Bloody Sunday, March 7, 1965. Join us on Sunday July 31st for a special service led by worship associate Mari Magaloni Ramos: “Good Trouble”

Our collective values of democracy, privacy and bodily autonomy are under active attack and we have suffered setbacks. And as is always the case, it is our BIPOC and LGBTQ folx that will be most negatively impacted in the coming years if we do not act. One of the most powerful things that we can do to stem this tide is to support and motivate our fellow Americans to vote. We can do that by meeting hate and grievance with love and beloved community.

Mari Magaloni Ramos, Guest Preacher; Dennis Adams, Worship Associate Cal Ball, Worship Associate; Reiko Oda Lane, Organist; Tommy Kesecker, Percussionist; Ben Rudiak-Gould, Songleader

Shulee Ong, Camera; Eric Shackelford, Camera; Donald Shearer, Camera; Jackson Munn, Camera; Max Benbow, Camera; Joe Chapot, Live Chat Moderator; Remigio Flood, Sexton; Kelvin Jones, Sexton; Athena Papadakos, Flowers; Linda Messner, Head Usher; Ralph Fenn, Les James, Tom Brookshire, Zoom Coffee Hour

What am I going to do? - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

“What am I going to do?”
Sunday, July 24, 10:50 am, Worship Service Livestream

This is the question we ask ourselves at major pivotal points in our lives: graduation, career choice, retirement. “What am I going to do?” is also the question we ask ourselves when there are decisions to be made about: relationships, medical options, questions of moving and choosing where we will live. I find it useful to distinguish between what I can do, and how I can be in the world. I will try to explain what that distinction means to me, and how I have found it helpful in making my choices in life.

Rev. Margot Campbell Gross, Minister Emerita; Sam King, Worship Associate; Reiko Oda Lane, Organist; Giacomo Fiore, Guitarist; Richard Fey, Songleader

Shulee Ong, Camera; Eric Shackelford, Camera; Donald Shearer, Camera; Jackson Munn, Camera; Joe Chapot, Live Chat Moderator; Remigio Flood, Sexton; Kelvin Jones, Sexton; Athena Papadakos, Flowers; Linda Messner, Head Usher; Ralph Fenn, Les James, Tom Brookshire, Zoom Coffee Hour

Moving in circles...

26 September 2022 at 07:30
I am in Franklin Indiana to teach at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking and am looking forward to a great week making boxes with friends, both new and old.  While I'm here Marc Adams and his wife Suzie will be headed to Boston where he'll make an address to the American Society for Surgery to the Hand at their annual conference.  While I'm here, my cousin Mary Lou will be visiting my wife in Eureka Springs.  I'm reminded that things tend to move in fascinating ways, circles mostly.  I'm here, Mary Lou is there at home in my place. Her husband, Michael, my dear friend, is no longer with us, but had arranged with a friend of his, Rose Ann Reser, to translate for me, an essay by Alfredo Bosi, from Portuguese, Os Trabahos de Mao, The w...

Bessie Smith and the Last Road to Clarksdale

26 September 2022 at 07:34
Bessie Smith, Empress of the Blues. On September 26, 1937 Bessie Smith, the Empress of the Blues, was critically injured in an auto accident on a dark highway between Memphis, Tennessee and Clarksdale, Mississippi.  She died of her injuries hours later at a segregated hospital in Clarksdale for Blacks only. Most people take as gospel the story that she died because she was refused admission to a hospital for Whites only.  But it turns out not to be true, at least in the exact form that has assumed the status of legend. The story seems to have originated with John Hammond, the legendary record producer, critic, and talent scout who was instrumental in promoting careers of l...

"Feed Your Soul" with Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar - All Souls Unitarian Church

25 September 2022 at 18:22
This message was delivered on Sunday, September 25, 2022 at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar in the 11:30 am The Point Humanist Hour service. Description: Irish poet John O'Donohue once said of the soul that "there is a part you that has never been wounded." What does that part of us know — what is it capable of? What would it look for us to feed that part of ourselves? Our bodies and minds are so hungry for our time and attention, that often our souls eat last in our lives. We hurry through our lives, and consume meaningful moments without really absorbing them, and we are left wondering my we struggle to find richer meaning in our daily lives. But with just a slight shift in how we see ourselves and our worlds, a new mode of life comes into view — one that is rich with depth of experience, and, most surprisingly of all, is easy to find. Searching for Grace

25 September 2022 at 18:10
SEARCHING FOR GRACE Rev. Kit Ketcham, PUUF, Sept. 25, 2022            As I’ve met with the four coffee klatch groups this past month, I’ve noted the heavy, heavy load that accompanies trauma, hearing about trauma in others, and dreading the impact of the next traumatic moment.          At our Water Ceremony on Sept. 11, we had asked each participant to name a trauma that, for them, had been life-changing, unexpected, and shocking.  When Meredith and I read the cards at the end of the ceremony, we were both in awe of the heavy load each person there was bearing.            Not just in their own lives but also in the awareness of the load their friends and neighbors were experiencing.  Right now, we are a...

Online M.Div. experience? Part-time?

25 September 2022 at 12:47

I have gone back and forth about pursuing a M.Div. for nearly 20 years. I had once gotten to the point where I was applying to several programs but rescinded my applications and pursued doctoral work in Psychology instead (I'm a Psychologist, by training and practice).

That said, I read, most often, about Unitarian and Universalist history and often find myself writing and drafting sermons but never delivering them anywhere, even as a layperson--mostly because we don't have a Congregation or CC in my Rural area.

I'm happy in my role as a Psychologist, but often wonder if it'd be possible to "do both" [i.e., become a part-time UU minister or associate AND practice as a psychologist].

If I pursued the M.Div., I'd want to complete via a part time option online at either ML, SK, or HDS (I know HDS is a FT program, and unlikely to work out).

Any thoughts? Any seminarians with advice? Comments about their own experiences with PT M.Div at ML or SK?

Last summer, East Shore UU Church in Kirtland, Ohio like many other congregations had just been through a very difficult year. Along with the continued challenges of the pandemic, they had to say goodbye to their developmental minister. The search for a new minister ended in disappointment, with no viable candidates available. Ministers in the greater Clevland area offered to help. Through patience and perseverance, these ministers came through for the East Shore UU Church in Kirtland. During their time they compiled a project post-mortem.

Learn how these ministers relied on staff and leaders to support one another during a time of shortage. Read the full story:https://bit.ly/3Rc4LUG

Two years later, we still mourn the loss of the amazing Unitarian Universalist leader Elandria Williams. It brings us some comfort to know that E’s memory and legacy lives on through all of the lives E touched.”

Pharoah Sanders

25 September 2022 at 08:48
The man Ornette Coleman called the greatest tenor player in the world, Pharoah Sanders, has died at age 81. He may have been the greatest tenor player in the world, but I tend to think of Pharoah Sanders as the master of spiritual jazz. First Colonial Newspaper Speedily Killed by Censorship

25 September 2022 at 03:00
