Sharing this message from UUA President Rev. SofΓa Betancourt, PhD and UU seminary presidents condemning the recent violent repression of student movements.
The courage and moral clarity of student movements regularly save and shape the conscience of this country. And history teaches us that responding to studentsβ voices with violence comes with tragic consequences. That is why I have joined my colleagues, the Rev. Rosemary Bray McNatt, President of Starr King School for the Ministry and Dr. ElΓas Ortega, President of Meadville Lombard Theological School in a statement condemning the violent repression of pro-Palestinian, anti-war student protests happening on college campuses across the United States.
In this time when anti-democratic white Christian nationalist ideology is rapidly gaining traction in mainstream political discourse and legislation, our academic institutions represent one of the most powerful remaining bastions of intellectual freedom and free speech. We urge the immediate removal of state and national police forces from campuses across the country; for institutions of higher learning to honor our shared commitments to freedom of speech and peaceful protest for students and academics; and for people of faith and conscience to listen deeply to the prophetic wisdom and courageous leadership of students across the country.
