We offer a resource of spiritual preparation ahead of the National Day of Mourning from our friends at UU Mass Action along with these words from Rev. Jo Murphy, Executive Director of UU Mass Action:

β€œAs we enter this Native American Heritage month, let us think about what it means for the future to be Indigenous. When we think about the future as Indigenous maybe we think of the form of decolonization that means giving back the land to those it was stolen from. Maybe it means finding ways in which all people who have come to the U.S. by force, through slavery or through forced migration, can also have rights to land along with Native people. Regardless of which actions we are able to take, let us root ourselves in an Indigenous future, knowing that such a future is sacred for us all.”

Photos from Unitarian Universalist Association's post

Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Earth had a full and fulfilling September during Climate Week. The UUMFE team headed to Washington DC to co-lead a three-day conference – Farming for Our Future: Systemic Changes for the Climate Crisis.

The last day of the conference was advocacy on the Hill. Ministers accompanied groups to visit senators and representatives from both sides of the aisle. Including ministers in advocacy meetings made the experience clear that they were showing up as people of faith. Spiritual care is essential for the long-haul work for climate justice.

30 Heads of Churches urgently call on President Biden for ceasefire

UUA President the Rev. Dr. Sofia Betancourt has joined with other religious leaders from a variety of faith traditions to call on President Biden and his Administration to support an immediate ceasefire and return of hostages, de-escalation, and restraint by all involved in the more than month-long violence between Hamas and Israel.

The letter states, in part:

β€œPeace with justice is the only lasting solution that will protect the long-term security and sustainability of the State of Israel and the self-determination and independence of Palestinians. The United States must demonstrate its commitment to the protection of all human life, advocating for a just and durable resolution to this crisis in which all Israelis and Palestinians might realize a vision of a just peace, illuminating human dignity, advancing security and self-determination for all.”

Indigenous people have served in the armed forces for generations, and their willingness to enlist continues to this day. The Library of Congress tells us that, since 9/11, Native Americans have the highest per-capita rate of military service than any other ethnic group.

We share this excerpt from a statement from Black Lives of UU Organizing Collective Board on the ongoing and escalating violence between Palestine and Israel:

β€œWe must imagine and advocate for a world where Palestine is free of state-sanctioned violence and Palestinians no longer live under occupation. Settler-colonialism is the root of the ongoing violence we’ve witnessed in Gaza. If radical love calls us to radical honesty, we must not turn away from the violence of settler-colonialism and how it has sowed the seeds of suffering and death…

We do not call for a free Palestine without recognizing the global harm of antisemitism. The generational trauma of the Holocaust and continued antisemitic violence impacts Jewish people every day…

Many well-intentioned people, including people in our faith, say this moment is so complicated that they can’t possibly imagine speaking out. We understand and echo the genuine concern about not saying something harmful. However, silence and neutrality in times of violence have too high a cost and have harmful consequences. Radical love means showing up in times of injustice, even imperfectly. This is a time to engage whatever means of power and voice you have to speak out and speak up.”

The UUA is holding close the people of Lewiston and Auburn, Maine, who today are mourning the loss of community members due to a mass shooting last evening. We grieve with the family, friends, and loved ones of those lost, and we pray for the healing of those who were injured and these communities as a whole. As an Association of local faith communities, we have reached out to Unitarian Universalists who are nearby this tragic event. We are here to offer support and love to yet another part of our country dealing with the epidemic of gun violence in this nation, and pray that all remain safe.

We have all unfortunately lived through this time and time again, so we know that our prayers – while necessary – are not sufficient to effectively end the crisis of gun violence in the United States. As a society, we must act. Gun violence impacts community after community, neighborhood after neighborhood, and in both private and community spaces. Enough is enough.

The continued inaction from our leaders on gun safety reform is unacceptable. We speak this truth today and will continue to do so until we have change. We must continue to push for reasonable gun safety regulations so that we can build a society that is free from fear, harm, and violence. By working together, we can create a Beloved Community built on equity and justice.

Please join us in holding close and praying for Auburn and Lewiston – and continuing to call for justice and gun safety on behalf of all our communities.

DRUUMM shares our healing prayers with Jacob and his family and uplifts the struggle for self-determination and environmental justice Jacob is a part of. We are painfully reminded that our Black, Indigenous, and Communities of Color face disproportionate trauma and harm, and if pastoral care would be helpful for any DRUUMM member, please reach out to us at druumm.org/chaplains

With heavy hearts, we reshare this message from UUA President the Rev. SofΓa Betancourt, PhD. We lift up her prayer for the people of Israel and Palestine in the face of the most recent and ongoing, devastating conflict:

Beloveds, I invite you to stop what you are doing if you can and sit with me in the depth of this tragedy of continued violence between Israel and Hamas. How to reconcile the cost of occupation and of war? How to nuance two very real histories of oppression and violence? I am holding close the words of U.N. Middle East peace envoy Tor Wennesland who said: "This is a dangerous precipice, and I appeal to all to pull back from the brink."

We as a people of faith can condemn violence against civilians while at the same time engaging the full legacies and histories of oppression that shape such devastating conflict. As a faith tradition, Unitarian Universalists have long worked for peace, and our principles and values call for the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all. At the same time, we have not engaged the tangled issues surrounding Israel/Palestine in community since 2018, and our last engagement resulted in severed relationships, and deep pain.

I pray for the people of Israel and Palestine. I pray for leaders around the globe who must respond to this latest flare of violence and the untenable ethical considerations that abound. I pray for Muslim and Jewish UUs who experience the impact of this long strife acutely. I pray that those of us less likely to know the trauma of unending brutality and harm will not turn away from generational loss, from the devastating realities and their root causes, or from the relentless tragedy of war and occupation. Be gentle with yourselves when you need to be, but do not turn away unless you must. We are one global family living tenuously on the same human-impacted Earth. Let us center ourselves in justice as we call for peace.

Fall Equinox Meditation

As the Autumn Equinox approaches for those in the Northern Hemisphere, we offer a meditation from Rev. Lori Gorgas Hlaban, which includes, in part:

β€œEquinox.
The wheel of the year turns, and turns again.
The air cools, days shorten,
the sun seems to weaken,
barely clearing the horizon after rising
before beginning its descent.

This is our opportunity, now, to pause.
Balanced, breathing in, breathing out,
knowing this present moment.
This present moment is all we’re guaranteed.
Like the sun moving toward the shortest day,
each moment arisesβ€”and is gone before we know it.”

In honor of #ClimateWeekNYC happening in alignment in the UN General Assembly in New York City, we are sharing this interview with DC-based UU activist Pablo DeJesus about the ways that agricultural policy and specifically the 2023 Farm Bill impacts us all:

β€œThe farm bill sets the funding and rules for a considerable portion of our agricultural activity and food systems. It informs what we eat, what our animals eat, and how we produce and distribute all foodstuffs. It frames our approach to anti-hunger programs as well as the science and financing behind the farming upon which we all depend.”

On so many frontsβ€”locally, organizationally, nationally, and globallyβ€”we are all living on the threshold of change. Together, we are experiencing great and necessary shifts that can amplify the changes reverberating in our personal lives. The first skill we need to develop for this threshold moment is learning to let goβ€”of what we had or knew, of what had been before but now no longer is. If we want to learn to let go, we have no further to search than the rim of our own bodies, where in a most literal sense we are not wearing the same skin we were housed in just one month before.

We are holding close to our hearts two Unitarian Universalist ministers - Rev. Dave Dunn and Rev. Jeff Jones – who were among 5 people arrested and released last week in Georgia after joining a non-violent direct action to protest the construction of the Cop City site near Atlanta. Their moral witness, as part of the grassroots movement to Stop Cop City, represents UU commitments to promote democratic action, climate and environmental justice, and racial justice; build power for justice through mutual aid; and resist the criminalization of our neighbors and communities. You can learn more about their work and what you can do to support the effort to Stop Cop City at Side With Love:

Yesterday morning, two Unitarian Universalist ministers, Rev. Dave Dunn and Rev. Jeff Jones, joined a non-violent direct action to protest the escalating anti-democratic actions of the Georgia Attorney General and the Atlanta City Council. Over the past year, these two tax-funded institutions have waged an ongoing campaign of disinformation, intimidation, and criminalization to repress the grassroots movement to Stop Cop City.

Revs. Dunn and Jones, along with three additional community leaders, were arrested yesterday after halting construction on the site. Side With Love and the UUSC: Unitarian Universalist Service Committee honor the courageous moral witness of these leaders and remain committed to showing up in solidarity with them and the movement to Stop Cop City.

Climate Week in New York City - September 17-23, 2023 | Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Earth

Unitarian Universalists are committed to working to address climate disruption and holding elected officials accountable for taking action on the world’s climate emergency.

#ClimateWeekNYC is an important opportunity to support frontline Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities - who are disproportionately impacted by the escalating climate crisis - as they confront the forces of white supremacy, colonialism, and extractive industry. Like Rev. SofΓa Betancourt, PhD, we are also inspired by the work of Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Earth, Side With Love, and other UU partners, who will participate in several events during #ClimateWeekNYC, September 17-23, 2023.

Earlier today, we received a number of comments on the post we made which offered a prayer paired with an unrelated illustration of an individual holding a transgender pride flag with the text β€œhow has living authentically benefitted you?” This post did not live up to our standards for attribution, or thematic relationship that honors both the author of the quote and the creator of the image. We take responsibility for this error and have removed the post from our social media platforms.

The UUA Communications team would like to share we are initiating a review of our internal policies on the use, attribution and links to the creators’ accounts for images and illustrations shared on our social media posts. Our goal is to make sure that our polices meet best practices for respecting the work of artists and creators and to live out our values in our messages. This is especially important for our most marginalized and impacted communities. We will share our policies once they are updated.

Thank you to the commenters who provided feedback. The community’s feedback helps us to better serve Unitarian Universalism, UU congregations across the country, and all of you. We appreciate your thoughtful efforts to work with Communications staff as we live out our shared values and principles.

UUA Communications would like to lift up President SofΓa’s message about yesterday’s Facebook post that initially said that the we honor all people β€œregardless of their actions and decisions” and takes full responsibility for the impact that it has caused. It is so important that we express the values of our UU faith tradition clearly and with mindful intention. Thank you again for the community feedback and for your thoughtful care of our UU values.

Unitarian Universalism is a progressive religious movement in the midst of deep work around accountability, covenant, and the ethics by which we hold one another’s relative safety and wellbeing. Yesterday, our main Facebook page posted language stating that we honor all people β€œregardless of their actions.” This is simply untrue, and I apologize on behalf of the UUA for the distress raised by this language. I want to take the space here to explain why this language was rightly such a cause for concern.

To imply that any and all actions are honored here is not only incorrect, but it conflicts with the theological center of our tradition. Universalism is about personhood, not behavior β€” in other words, our faith makes the radical claim that everyone is born beloved, that no person is beyond the reach of Love’s embrace, and there is always the possibility of redemption and repair. But because our faith is communal and covenantal, it also calls us to directly address harm, both interpersonal and systemic.

We are called to hold one another in love across a range of past mistakes, across a range of beliefs, across a range of identities and perspectives and a great many other things. We teach that there is always a path back into beloved community. But the covenant that lives at the center of our faith is grounded in love itself. And that love requires that we hold one another accountable for our actions, and that we do the work of repair when we have caused harm. Thank you, Beloveds, for your feedback and your depth of care for our values in the public square.

5 Black Leaders that Shaped the Labor Movement | NEA

In honor of Labor Day we chose to share this piece on 5 black leaders. Racial justice and economic justice are intrinsically intertwined. However, far too often in our nation’s history, those who benefit from the existing order have used race and class to divide us. These Black leaders strengthened both the labor and civil rights movements by fighting discrimination in unions and building strong coalitions for the welfare of all.

These Black leaders had strong visions for the future of the labor movement, uniting broad coalitions for racial justice, worker rights, and the welfare of all.

Welcome, in this Season of Return

The Rev. SofΓa Betancourt, PhD, offers a welcome message at the start of a new congregational year for Unitarian Universalists. Rev. We echo Rev. SofΓa Betancourt, PhD's message.

I am holding UUs and all of our extended communities close in my heart as we work to find our way amid the immense struggles and suffering of recent weeks.

I am sitting with photos of intense flooding in FL and reflecting on how each day brings new challenges and a profound need to be in community. We are living into the impacts of climate disruption in all of its forms – heat, floods, fires, tornadoes, and more. The moral call for a faithful and committed response could not be clearer. This is work we will continue to live into together as a movement.

I also find myself both grieving and determined in response to the renewed wake of violence in this nation – in the threats to our congregations and the devastation in our streets. Racialized violence, resistance to gun control, legislative violence, and the use of fear to promote controlling ideologies are just some of the ways people are being targeted in these heartbreaking times.

I know that I need to remain connected to all of you when the days are difficult. I know that the impact of our response is greater when we ground ourselves in our values and show up together to proclaim that another way is possible. Beloveds, I believe in us. I believe that we can renew the moral witness and prophetic action of the progressive religious left as we join together for all that is to come. The time for us to live the values of our faith every day is right now.

As the 60th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington approaches, we honor this foundational moment. Yet, we know that the fight for full equity and civil rights is far from over. While we recognize the dedication and courage of those who came before, we also recognize that this history, especially for UUs, is complex. In his well-known speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. shared a vision of Beloved Community. As Unitarian Universalists, we are called to continue working in solidarity with Black-led movements for justice.

We recommit to this essential work in the face of rising authoritarianism and attacks on civil liberties, including voting rights. UU the Vote has focused UU organizing not only on voter mobilization, but on democracy as a whole beyond election cycles. We continue to deepen our work in collaboration with congregations, UU State Action Networks, and Movements led by frontline communities.

Read Side With Love Field & Programs Director Nicole Pressley shares this powerful reflection about the grassroots organizing happening to #StopCopCity!

"It feels good to be working on such a deeply meaningful campaign. Here in Southwest Atlanta, the Cop City Vote referendum campaign operates from the American Friends Service Committee office. The walls are covered with posters from past campaigns emblazoned with powerful messages that proclaim the dignity of workers, the right to housing, and the end to war. Also on this wall is a wood turtle with a painting of Tortuguita, the climate activist killed by police on January 18th of this year in the Weelaunee forest. Tortuguita was protesting the harm and environmental degradation caused by the planned development of this vast, militarized law enforcement training compound.

In this room, each poster, each weathered clipboard, and boxes of t-shirts are quiet reminders of the life, love, and legacy that make this space powerful."

Did you know...The new Barbie movie was co-written and directed by a Unitarian Universalist? Greta Gerwig is a talented filmmaker and also a proud UU!

Back in 2013 she told UU World β€œUnitarianism is the most complete expression of my multiple and, at times, contradictory thoughts about the spiritual life. I think the openness of the community allows for a greater variety of personal faith and ideas. It isn’t oppressively open, but generously so.I think I keep returning to a UU church again and again because it resonates with something deep inside of me that feels that all I really know is that I don’t know. Unitarian Universalism is the best place for me to experience the fullness of that sentiment of not knowing.”

Today and every day, we recommit ourselves to deepening our understanding of the intersectionality of disability and race, class, gender, and sexuality. And as a community that centers love and care for all, we seek new opportunities to express our gratitude for those who risk so much to move us closer to equity.

#DisabilityIndependenceDay #ADA33

On this #NationalDisabilityIndependenceDay I am appreciative that the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law over 30 years ago, even as I know that so many people with disabilities still experience painful exclusion and the everyday violation of their basic human rights.

Today also brings to my mind and heart the courage and dedication of so many disability rights activists, including the amazing #JudyHeumann who passed away earlier this year, who every day move us toward greater equity. May we all rededicate ourselves to disability justice within our communities and beyond.

Sharing a pastoral message from UUA President Rev. Dr. SofΓa Betancourt as we process the news that one of our member congregations in Texas was victim of an arson attack yesterday.

We are holding the members, staff, and community of Community Unitarian Universalist Church of Plano in our hearts and prayers in this difficult time and we are so grateful that no individuals were hurt.

Beloveds, over the weekend one of our member congregations experienced a targeted attack on their building. It happened late at night, and blessedly no one was injured. We hold the members, staff, and community of the Community Unitarian Universalist Church of Plano, TX in our hearts and prayers today, as authorities investigate arson and a possible hate crime.

Acts of terror like this are meant to make us fear for our safety and question the lifesaving ministry and witness our faith inspires. I am proud of who we are and all that we do to promote love and justice in the world. In these days when the most vulnerable among us are subject to everyday acts of physical and legislative violence, let us turn to one another when despair for humanity might otherwise silence us. To our beloveds in Texas and everywhere that simply living as our full selves gets harder every day, we will not give up. We are with you. You always have a home among us.
