We are mindful that this Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month arrives during a time when so many people of Asian American and Pacific Islander descent are still facing terrible violence and bigotry. As we honor the beauty and diversity of AAPI heritage and culture, we hold the AAPI community in our hearts we remain committed to solidarity in seeking justice and equity for all.

We all deserve to live in our communities without fear.

We are so grateful for the pastoral presence of UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray. She offers this message in response to the tragic shooting in Uvalde, TX:

My heart aches for the children, teachers, school staff, families, first responders, and community in Uvalde, Texas. I am lifting up the families who lost loved ones and their community, who will live with the legacy of yesterday’s violence forever in their hearts. The horrific toll of this loss of grade school children is truly beyond words. It doesn’t have to be this way.

And while we pray for the victims and their families and provide support and comfort to their community, we must also demand action to pass reasonable gun safety regulations. We cannot tolerate and accept living under these conditions of mass violence anymore.

GA 2022: Not Business as Usual

All delegates—onsite or online—will vote via electronic ballot. The idea is to give delegates more time to consider the issues and to communicate with their congregations instead of having to discuss the resolutions during GA and voting on the spot.

We Must Confront And Dismantle White Supremacy

In the days since the most recent brutal attack on Black people took place in Buffalo, NY, the United States has once again been forced to confront our long history of racism. The stain of white supremacy has been part of American society since before we were a nation.

Additionally, throughout our history, even before we were a nation, there have been courageous and faithful civil rights leaders, most of whom were people of color, who have repeatedly shown up for justice and inspired others to fight against what President Biden just yesterday called the “poison” of white supremacy.

The UUA remains steadfast in our commitment to anti-racism. We must all find the moral courage to speak out against white nationalist rhetoric that fuels ongoing violence and hate crimes. We know that the Beloved Community can be built here in the United States but only through the hard work of listening to and organizing in solidarity with those most impacted by systemic racism.

Statement on Buffalo Shootings: "We begin with truth-telling and moving together in that truth." — Side With Love

Side with Love reminds us that, far from being an isolated incident, the tragic events in #Buffalo are a predictable outcome of our white supremacy culture:

This latest attack is the result of a society that is rooted in white supremacy. This violence...shows up with believing that white lives should be protected over Black lives–knowing that Black children playing on playgrounds or sleeping in their homes are killed by police without hesitation, while white assailants are taken safely into custody. It shows up with packaging genocidal movements in language like “Replacement Theory.” It shows up when the media calls Mike Brown an “18-year-old man” and the Buffalo shooter a ”white teenager.”

10 killed, 3 wounded in racist shooting at Buffalo supermarket, officials say

We are holding the victims and their families and the entire Buffalo community in love and light in this heartbreaking time. The racist and anti-Semitic rationale behind this shooting - yet another attack on a community of color by a person espousing white supremacist ideology - is an echo of the ongoing call for this country to take seriously the pervasive and deadly consequences of racism.

Unitarian Universalism is committed to building a world that is more just and equitable and we have much work to do. As we make space in our hearts and in our spiritual communities for people to grieve and find sustenance, we must also prepare for the work ahead. We must continue to show up for our BIPOC and LGBTQIA siblings and communities, work to elect leaders at all levels that will take action to end identity-based oppression, marginalization and violence, and hold these leaders accountable.

Our hearts heavy with grief, we continue onward with you all.

Mourning 1 Million Lost to Covid-19

Today we honor the 1 million Americans who have died due to COVID-19. From the beginning of the pandemic, this country failed to center our response on supporting the well-being of the most vulnerable in our communities, which led to BIPOC and disabled people bearing the brunt of both illness and death.

We remain concerned that a desire to “quickly return to normal” is further isolating disabled and immunocompromised people. It matters that we continue to ask how to support those who are most vulnerable within and beyond UU congregations and that we continue to work to create safe and inclusive spaces for those seeking comfort and spiritual connection during these difficult times.

We are all holding so much these days, it can be hard to make space for arbitrary calendar dates of celebration. And so, on this Mother’s Day, we offer this reading from UU minister Rev. Lisa Bovee-Kemper, which includes in part:

“The truth of human experience dictates that on any given day, we each come to the table with hearts in different places. It is especially so on this day, invented to honor women who nurture.

In this circle of care, we honor the truth that mothering is not and never will be quantified in one single descriptor. Mothering can be elusive or infuriating, fulfilling or confusing, commonplace or triumphant.

There is room for all in this circle.”

Some religions support abortion rights. Their leaders are speaking up.

Proud to have our history of commitment to reproductive justice and our theologically based support for access to abortion included in this great story from
NBC NewsBCNews.

“Unitarian Universalists have the highest level of support for abortion rights among denominations, with 90 percent saying abortion should be legal, according to Pew Research.”

“We support abortion justice not despite our religious values but because of them." Our faith will always call us to advocate on behalf of all people to be able to readily access safe, legal abortion care. In the wake of the leak of the Supreme Court’s draft opinion, our role as UU’s in this moment of time should continue to center the people most impacted.

Covid's toll in the U.S. reaches a once unfathomable number: 1 million deaths

As the US reaches the somber benchmark of 1 million deaths from COVID 19, we mourn all who have died, and we grieve for the millions more that have been impacted by this deadly virus. We know that COVID has had a disproportionate impact on people with disabilities, on Black, Hispanic and Latino, and Indigenous communities, as well as fueling violence against Asian and Asian American communities. Because so many people hold intersecting vulnerable identities, we know the harm has been significant.

The UUA continues to seek ways to support those who are most vulnerable within and beyond UU congregations, and to help congregations provide safe and inclusive ways of providing the hope, healing, and spiritual connection that so many need in this painful time.

The Fight for Abortion Access Isn’t Over — Side With Love

As a people of faith, Unitarian Universalists have committed to working together for Reproductive Justice, following the lead of movement partners who have been in the struggle and on the frontlines for years. Here are six things you can do today to take action:

1. Turn out tonight wherever you are to answer the Women’s March’s call to Rally for Roe.

2. Join Side With Love and the National Network of Abortion Funds for our upcoming political education event, Heart-to-Heart: Abortion Conversations & Action for a Post-Roe World, Tuesday, May 17 at 8pm ET/5pm PT.

3. Support local organizing for abortion access and Reproductive Justice. Form a congregational team, educate yourselves, join with other progressive people of faith, follow the lead of your local Reproductive Justice organization.

4. Donate to your local abortion fund to ensure that everyone who needs an abortion can afford one.

5. Get involved with SACReD, the Spiritual Alliance of Communities for Reproductive Dignity, which is building a multi-racial, multi-faith movement of congregations across the country that publicly proclaim their support for reproductive dignity. It’s so new that it doesn’t have a full website, but you can sign up for future communications here.

UUs Will Continue to Fight for Abortion Access

We are heartbroken and outraged that it appears the Supreme Court is poised to overturn nearly five decades of precedent to take rights away from pregnant people. And we greatly fear that this decision will justify efforts to further limit the rights of women and other vulnerable populations in this country.

As a faith tradition, we are committed to #ReproductiveJustice, which affirms the human right to have children, not to have children, to parent the children one has in healthy environments to safeguard bodily autonomy, and to express one's sexuality freely.

Our faith still urgently calls us to advocate on behalf of all people to be able to readily access safe, legal abortion care whenever and wherever they need it. We will not rest until that reality is true across the country.

UUs Honor Workers’ Dignity and Support the Labor Movement

The UUA unequivocally sides with the inspiring labor resurgence happening in workplaces across the country. As Unitarian Universalists, we have long believed that challenging inequity locally and globally for workers is a moral imperative.

In 2000, we adopted a Statement of Conscience on economic injustice, poverty, and racism, and another Statement of Conscience in 2017 to address escalating economic inequality. And just last year, our national Unitarian Universalist General Assembly passed an Action of Immediate Witness on the COVID-19 pandemic, understanding that our commitment to justice, equity, and compassion, calls on us to join in solidarity with people fighting for living wages, healthcare, and a more fair economy.

To those on the picket line, we say “Strike! Huelga! Yes we can! Si Se Puede!” To those unjustly and illegally fired from their jobs for union organizing, we want you to know that we are with you! And to all who believe in justice and democracy in our government, our communities and in our workplaces, we join you in solidarity.

My Little d deaf Take on “CODA” and Thoughts on “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”

Terry Galloway, Beacon Press author of Mean Little deaf Queer: A Memoir, offers her take on the Oscar-winning film CODA and disability representation in film:

"Popular culture regards the Deaf community as part of the larger Disability Community instead of a culture entirely unto itself. For the mainstream, CODA is a film that allows them to make emotional inroads toward a basic understanding of disability.

Maybe it will blaze a larger trail. Maybe it won’t.

Crip Camp, a genius film, would have been my choice as a trailblazer for disability complexity. But it was a documentary and didn’t win the Oscar."

Three Former Minneapolis Cops Involved in Death of George Floyd Reject Plea Deal

It has been a year since we witnessed an unfortunately rare moment of police accountability with Derek Chauvin’s guilty verdict. We continue to speak George Floyd’s name in remembrance of his life and recognize so many other Black people who have been harrassed, assualted or murdered by police.

We continue to hold Black communities in love and care. We remain in solidarity with all who are working to divest from policing and investing in community care. #justiceforgeorgefloyd #blacklivesmatter

We echo UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray 's message. We wish you a joyful Passover!

We echo UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray 's message. We wish you a joyful Passover!

Today, Jews around the world, including Jewish Unitarian Universalists, are celebrating #Passover. This often includes the telling of the story of the Exodus, with its messages of struggle, of loss, of freedom, justice and community. Today is also #GoodFriday and #Easter comes this Sunday, with the telling of the story of Jesus’s death and resurrection; messages of sacrifice, of loss, of justice, of freedom.

In both, there are practices of gathering as family and in community, storytelling and reminders of the resiliency and hope we experience through our history, our ancestors, our faith and one another.

This continues to be a time of uncertainty, heartbreak, injustice and suffering here in the U.S. and around the world. As we gather for these celebrations, may we remember the ways these holy days call us to a deeper commitment to resist oppression and work for the liberation of all.

Video Engagement Strategy with Peter Bowden

Did your congregation gain new visitors or reconnect with previous members when you broadcast Sunday worship online during the pandemic?

The UUA heard from many who had moved away, or those whose family or health situations made in-person worship difficult or risky, and others who had been geographically isolated from their nearest congregation. Finding live UU worship online offered them much-needed hope and connection during a time of widespread isolation.

If your congregation is looking for ways to retain and grow your active online presence, the UUA has teamed up with @Peter Bowden (@UUPlanet on Twitter), longtime UU trainer and coach specializing in digital and social media strategy, to offer congregations a live one-week video strategy training at the end of April.

The training will offer guidance for developing systematic ways to incorporate online events and engagement that minimizes burnout for staff and leaders, and piques the interest of spiritual seekers online to come join your community.

Celebrating a More Inclusive Judiciary — Side With Love

Thanks to grassroots organizing, we knew President Biden’s SCOTUS nominee would be the first Black woman so honored, but that doesn't minimize the staggering importance of breaking through 230+ years of excluding Black women from the Supreme Court.

Jackson brings impeccable credentials that inspired the UUA to formally join in supporting her nomination. Among her decades of achievements, Jackson will break another pivotal barrier by becoming the first public defender ever to serve on the Supreme Court and the first criminal defense attorney since Thurgood Marshall retired in 1991.

COVID-19 Cases and Deaths by Race/Ethnicity: Current Data and Changes Over Time

This time two years ago, our lives changed forever when the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. Vaccinations and therapeutic strategies have allowed some Americans to move on with their lives.

But we cannot forget that the pandemic permanently altered many lives, particularly among Black and brown families, individuals, and communities. Recent analyses of federal, state, and local data show that people of color experienced a disproportionate burden of cases and deaths. As is almost always true, this crisis has made pre-existing racial inequities much worse.

As a society, we need to reflect on how to close these gaps. As a faith tradition, Unitarian Universalists are committed to justice, equality, and inclusion. When it comes to COVID-19, that means respecting and protecting the BIPOC communities disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, promoting the right to health care, and creating better access to it.

As we pick up the pieces of this pandemic and rebuild, may we hold the pain of so many lives lost and so much injustice together as communities of love and justice. And may the experience of shared heartbreak move us to be bolder as we take action where we live to transform this society into one that is rooted in justice and equality for all.

Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability

This week, we were reminded once again that the damage that climate change will bring will devastate neighborhoods and disrupt lives around the world, especially BIPOC communities and developing nations. Please reach out to your local clergy or church care teams for support, or contact TXUUJM@gmail.com and let us know how your state justice ministry can support you. We pledge to do everything we can.

Updates from the Texas UU Justice Ministry, in Support of Trans Texans and Their Families

Dear Texas UUs and justice seeking friends,

Trans people embody the inherent worth and dignity that is a pillar of our Unitarian Universalist faith. At the Texas Unitarian Universalist Justice Ministry, our hearts are with trans kids, their families and caregivers, and all trans and nonbinary people. We love you fiercely, and will forever fight for your rights and honor the beautiful ways you are you.

As has been reported, Attorney General Ken Paxton and Governor Greg Abbott are threatening to remove trans-children from their homes if parents seek gender-affirming care, prosecute their parents for child abuse, and prosecute mandatory reporters — including clergy — for failing to report this “child abuse.”

These threats are abhorrent, unconscionable, and immoral, and Paxton and Abbott's fear-mongering poses real danger to the health and safety of trans Texans. However, we also want to send legal and spiritual reassurance from TXUUJM partners, ministers, and friends (below).

To trans UUs and parents, caregivers, and families of trans kids: You are deeply loved. Paxton and Abbott do NOT speak for your communities of faith. Your clergy are NOT required to report gender-affirming care, nor would we. We pray you are tending to your needs and doing what gives you joy right now. Please reach out to your local clergy or church care teams for support, or contact TXUUJM@gmail.com and let us know how your state justice ministry can support you. We pledge to do everything we can.

In faith,

– Rev. Erin Walter, Minister & Executive Director, Texas UU Justice Ministry

Opportunities to Say Yes

Are you participating in Lent this year? In this Braver Wiser message, Author Nathan Ryan shares an experience he has had with Lent. “I’m prone to think of my Lenten practice as a failure: I didn’t pick something rigorous enough to help me grapple with the realities of my own mortality and the temporary nature of all of existence. Then again, maybe transformation shouldn't be measured in forty-day increments.”

For those who practice, we hope this season of Lent is a meaningful one for you - with or without transformation.

Last year for Lent, I decided to say yes to any request. I made it all the way to Easter without having to honor my decision.

Diversity of Sexuality and Gender is a Gift

There is pain and outrage in our hearts because Texas Governor Greg Abbott has escalated the attacks on transgender people living in his state, especially trans youth, by equating medical care with child abuse. Governor Abbott is weaponizing this basic right of care for trans youth and their families.

As Unitarian Universalists, let us come together in solidarity at this critical moment in unequivocal support for trans children. We will continue to work unceasingly to create inclusive religious communities and for LGBTQIA+ justice and equity as a fundamental part of our faith tradition.

To our trans family: we uplift and support all the trans and non-binary people in our lives, our congregations, and communities. You are not alone. We hold trans children and their families—in Texas and in the world—in deep care.

A Disability Day of Mourning Reflection

Today we grieve for disabled people who have been murdered by the same people who should have loved and supported them: their family members. Author Jessi Sadaka, reminds us "Disabled people shouldn't need luck to survive ableism. Let us build a future where honoring the Disability Day of Mourning means acknowledging historical loss rather than ongoing trauma. To get there, may we transform how we treat the living, while we mourn our beloved dead. To my fellow disabled people, always remember: The things we are capable of doing are worthy. And the value in each of us is inherent, sacred, and forever. Amen."

“We Demand An End to the Bloodshed”: UUSC Responds to Vladimir Putin’s Invasion of Ukraine - Unitarian Universalist Service Comm...

We are in strong solidarity with our partners at the international human rights organization, The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, in condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Our belief as UUs in the inherent worth and dignity of all people and our commitment to building a world community of peace, liberty and justice for all, calls us to uplift the ways that this violence only worsens the global refugee crisis and undermines the human rights of the Ukrainian people. We echo the Service Committee when they affirm,

"As human rights advocates based in the United States condemning this latest escalation of the conflict, we hope this moment might also serve as an opportunity for all of us and our leaders to reflect on our own history of similar acts of aggression and militarism... All-powerful states must be held accountable to the principles of human rights."

Putin's aggression will certainly lead to human rights violations.
