And while we celebrate, may we also reflect of slavery's long legacy and reaffirm our commitments to disrupting and dismantling the capitalist, racist and, malicious systems of oppression still woven tightly into so many institutions we depend on.

Our work continues, as people of faith and conscience, to repair the harms caused by racism, restore the dignity and power of Black people, and reimagine our world in a way where racism, bigotry, and hatred are obliterated.

UU the Vote and UU College of Social Justice are excited to announce the UU the Vote Legacy Fellowship for UU Young Adults and/or Black, Indigenous, and people of color Unitarian Universalists. This Fellowship recognizes and supports leaders in our faith community who carry on the legacy of activism and organizing that embody our faith through justice organizing and activism.

The fellowship is a 6-month program (July-November) that will recognize 6 to 8 individuals to support your work and expand your skills and capacity. Fellows will be awarded $5,000 with an additional $1,500 project budget.

The success of UU the Vote was the result of leaders engaging in multiple strategies and tactics to support our UU and larger communities. The success was defined by partnerships with frontline communities and organizations–many of which are led by and organized by young adults and BIPOC communities. A new Unitarian Universalist Association presidentβ€”the public, spiritual, and executive leader of the UU movement and the UUA organization and staffβ€”will be elected at General Assembly 2023, for a six-year term.

The Presidential Search Committee (PSC), which the General Assembly created in 2010, is tasked with evaluating applications for president and selecting at least two nominees.

We are so grateful for the pastoral presence of UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray. She offers this message in response to the tragic shooting in Uvalde, TX:

My heart aches for the children, teachers, school staff, families, first responders, and community in Uvalde, Texas. I am lifting up the families who lost loved ones and their community, who will live with the legacy of yesterday’s violence forever in their hearts. The horrific toll of this loss of grade school children is truly beyond words. It doesn’t have to be this way.

And while we pray for the victims and their families and provide support and comfort to their community, we must also demand action to pass reasonable gun safety regulations. We cannot tolerate and accept living under these conditions of mass violence anymore.

In the days since the most recent brutal attack on Black people took place in Buffalo, NY, the United States has once again been forced to confront our long history of racism. The stain of white supremacy has been part of American society since before we were a nation.

Additionally, throughout our history, even before we were a nation, there have been courageous and faithful civil rights leaders, most of whom were people of color, who have repeatedly shown up for justice and inspired others to fight against what President Biden just yesterday called the β€œpoison” of white supremacy.

The UUA remains steadfast in our commitment to anti-racism. We must all find the moral courage to speak out against white nationalist rhetoric that fuels ongoing violence and hate crimes. We know that the Beloved Community can be built here in the United States but only through the hard work of listening to and organizing in solidarity with those most impacted by systemic racism.

Side with Love reminds us that, far from being an isolated incident, the tragic events in #Buffalo are a predictable outcome of our white supremacy culture:

This latest attack is the result of a society that is rooted in white supremacy. This violence...shows up with believing that white lives should be protected over Black lives–knowing that Black children playing on playgrounds or sleeping in their homes are killed by police without hesitation, while white assailants are taken safely into custody. It shows up with packaging genocidal movements in language like β€œReplacement Theory.” It shows up when the media calls Mike Brown an β€œ18-year-old man” and the Buffalo shooter a ”white teenager.”

We are holding the victims and their families and the entire Buffalo community in love and light in this heartbreaking time. The racist and anti-Semitic rationale behind this shooting - yet another attack on a community of color by a person espousing white supremacist ideology - is an echo of the ongoing call for this country to take seriously the pervasive and deadly consequences of racism.

Unitarian Universalism is committed to building a world that is more just and equitable and we have much work to do. As we make space in our hearts and in our spiritual communities for people to grieve and find sustenance, we must also prepare for the work ahead. We must continue to show up for our BIPOC and LGBTQIA siblings and communities, work to elect leaders at all levels that will take action to end identity-based oppression, marginalization and violence, and hold these leaders accountable.

Our hearts heavy with grief, we continue onward with you all.

Mourning 1 Million Lost to Covid-19

Today we honor the 1 million Americans who have died due to COVID-19. From the beginning of the pandemic, this country failed to center our response on supporting the well-being of the most vulnerable in our communities, which led to BIPOC and disabled people bearing the brunt of both illness and death.

We remain concerned that a desire to β€œquickly return to normal” is further isolating disabled and immunocompromised people. It matters that we continue to ask how to support those who are most vulnerable within and beyond UU congregations and that we continue to work to create safe and inclusive spaces for those seeking comfort and spiritual connection during these difficult times.
