In the days since the most recent brutal attack on Black people took place in Buffalo, NY, the United States has once again been forced to confront our long history of racism. The stain of white supremacy has been part of American society since before we were a nation.

Additionally, throughout our history, even before we were a nation, there have been courageous and faithful civil rights leaders, most of whom were people of color, who have repeatedly shown up for justice and inspired others to fight against what President Biden just yesterday called the “poison” of white supremacy.

The UUA remains steadfast in our commitment to anti-racism. We must all find the moral courage to speak out against white nationalist rhetoric that fuels ongoing violence and hate crimes. We know that the Beloved Community can be built here in the United States but only through the hard work of listening to and organizing in solidarity with those most impacted by systemic racism.

As the US reaches the somber benchmark of 1 million deaths from COVID 19, we mourn all who have died, and we grieve for the millions more that have been impacted by this deadly virus. We know that COVID has had a disproportionate impact on people with disabilities, on Black, Hispanic and Latino, and Indigenous communities, as well as fueling violence against Asian and Asian American communities. Because so many people hold intersecting vulnerable identities, we know the harm has been significant.

The UUA continues to seek ways to support those who are most vulnerable within and beyond UU congregations, and to help congregations provide safe and inclusive ways of providing the hope, healing, and spiritual connection that so many need in this painful time.

Today, Jews around the world, including Jewish Unitarian Universalists, are celebrating #Passover. This often includes the telling of the story of the Exodus, with its messages of struggle, of loss, of freedom, justice and community. Today is also #GoodFriday and #Easter comes this Sunday, with the telling of the story of Jesus’s death and resurrection; messages of sacrifice, of loss, of justice, of freedom.

In both, there are practices of gathering as family and in community, storytelling and reminders of the resiliency and hope we experience through our history, our ancestors, our faith and one another.

This continues to be a time of uncertainty, heartbreak, injustice and suffering here in the U.S. and around the world. As we gather for these celebrations, may we remember the ways these holy days call us to a deeper commitment to resist oppression and work for the liberation of all.

April 4 is the date Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968 while he was in Memphis, Tennessee to support sanitation workers. Exactly one year before, on April 4, 1967, Dr. King gave one of his most consequential speeches titled, “Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence”. This speech was the first time he publicly called for an end to the U.S. war in Vietnam and for unity and action to end the triple threats of militarism, racism, and extreme materialism.
