We love how Peter Bowden gets it. As a UU, Peter gets how important it is for people to find out about Unitarian Universalism's life-saving message of inclusion and healing. He also gets how it's not always easy for congregations to take on more work to find these audiences and package the right message at the right moment to reach them.

That's why the UUA has sponsored a free, live, week-long online workshop with Peter to help congregations and groups build digital engagement into their regular workflow so it's sustainable for the long-term.

My Little d deaf Take on β€œCODA” and Thoughts on β€œThe Eyes of Tammy Faye”

Terry Galloway, Beacon Press author of Mean Little deaf Queer: A Memoir, offers her take on the Oscar-winning film CODA and disability representation in film:

"Popular culture regards the Deaf community as part of the larger Disability Community instead of a culture entirely unto itself. For the mainstream, CODA is a film that allows them to make emotional inroads toward a basic understanding of disability.

Maybe it will blaze a larger trail. Maybe it won’t.

Crip Camp, a genius film, would have been my choice as a trailblazer for disability complexity. But it was a documentary and didn’t win the Oscar."

UUs Honor Workers’ Dignity and Support the Labor Movement

The UUA unequivocally sides with the inspiring labor resurgence happening in workplaces across the country. As Unitarian Universalists, we have long believed that challenging inequity locally and globally for workers is a moral imperative.

In 2000, we adopted a Statement of Conscience on economic injustice, poverty, and racism, and another Statement of Conscience in 2017 to address escalating economic inequality. And just last year, our national Unitarian Universalist General Assembly passed an Action of Immediate Witness on the COVID-19 pandemic, understanding that our commitment to justice, equity, and compassion, calls on us to join in solidarity with people fighting for living wages, healthcare, and a more fair economy.

To those on the picket line, we say β€œStrike! Huelga! Yes we can! Si Se Puede!” To those unjustly and illegally fired from their jobs for union organizing, we want you to know that we are with you! And to all who believe in justice and democracy in our government, our communities and in our workplaces, we join you in solidarity.

As people of faith and conscience we rejoice in recent historic wins for workers.

UUs Will Continue to Fight for Abortion Access

We are heartbroken and outraged that it appears the Supreme Court is poised to overturn nearly five decades of precedent to take rights away from pregnant people. And we greatly fear that this decision will justify efforts to further limit the rights of women and other vulnerable populations in this country.

As a faith tradition, we are committed to #ReproductiveJustice, which affirms the human right to have children, not to have children, to parent the children one has in healthy environments to safeguard bodily autonomy, and to express one's sexuality freely.

Our faith still urgently calls us to advocate on behalf of all people to be able to readily access safe, legal abortion care whenever and wherever they need it. We will not rest until that reality is true across the country.

As Unitarian Universalists, we believe that all bodies are sacred.

The Fight for Abortion Access Isn’t Over β€” Side With Love

As a people of faith, Unitarian Universalists have committed to working together for Reproductive Justice, following the lead of movement partners who have been in the struggle and on the frontlines for years. Here are six things you can do today to take action:

1. Turn out tonight wherever you are to answer the Women’s March’s call to Rally for Roe.

2. Join Side With Love and the National Network of Abortion Funds for our upcoming political education event, Heart-to-Heart: Abortion Conversations & Action for a Post-Roe World, Tuesday, May 17 at 8pm ET/5pm PT.

3. Support local organizing for abortion access and Reproductive Justice. Form a congregational team, educate yourselves, join with other progressive people of faith, follow the lead of your local Reproductive Justice organization.

4. Donate to your local abortion fund to ensure that everyone who needs an abortion can afford one.

5. Get involved with SACReD, the Spiritual Alliance of Communities for Reproductive Dignity, which is building a multi-racial, multi-faith movement of congregations across the country that publicly proclaim their support for reproductive dignity. It’s so new that it doesn’t have a full website, but you can sign up for future communications here.

https://bit.ly/3s8639t
6. Get involved with the work of the Liberate Abortion Coalition, and consider participating in the upcoming Abortion Crisis Caravan this June.

Since well before Roe v. Wade, Unitarian Universalists have declared unequivocally that we support every person’s right to make decisions about their own bodies and reproductive health, including the choice to seek abortion care. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, UUs have supported movements...

Covid's toll in the U.S. reaches a once unfathomable number: 1 million deaths

As the US reaches the somber benchmark of 1 million deaths from COVID 19, we mourn all who have died, and we grieve for the millions more that have been impacted by this deadly virus. We know that COVID has had a disproportionate impact on people with disabilities, on Black, Hispanic and Latino, and Indigenous communities, as well as fueling violence against Asian and Asian American communities. Because so many people hold intersecting vulnerable identities, we know the harm has been significant.

The UUA continues to seek ways to support those who are most vulnerable within and beyond UU congregations, and to help congregations provide safe and inclusive ways of providing the hope, healing, and spiritual connection that so many need in this painful time.

"It's an exponential number of other people that are walking around with a small hole in their heart," one widow said.

Some religions support abortion rights. Their leaders are speaking up.

Proud to have our history of commitment to reproductive justice and our theologically based support for access to abortion included in this great story from
NBC NewsBCNews.

β€œUnitarian Universalists have the highest level of support for abortion rights among denominations, with 90 percent saying abortion should be legal, according to Pew Research.”

Our faith will always call us to advocate on behalf of all people to be able to readily access safe, legal abortion care. We are all holding so much these days, it can be hard to make space for arbitrary calendar dates of celebration. And so, on this Mother’s Day, we offer this reading from UU minister Rev. Lisa Bovee-Kemper, which includes in part:

β€œThe truth of human experience dictates that on any given day, we each come to the table with hearts in different places. It is especially so on this day, invented to honor women who nurture.

In this circle of care, we honor the truth that mothering is not and never will be quantified in one single descriptor. Mothering can be elusive or infuriating, fulfilling or confusing, commonplace or triumphant.

There is room for all in this circle.”

Mourning 1 Million Lost to Covid-19

Today we honor the 1 million Americans who have died due to COVID-19. From the beginning of the pandemic, this country failed to center our response on supporting the well-being of the most vulnerable in our communities, which led to BIPOC and disabled people bearing the brunt of both illness and death.

We remain concerned that a desire to β€œquickly return to normal” is further isolating disabled and immunocompromised people. It matters that we continue to ask how to support those who are most vulnerable within and beyond UU congregations and that we continue to work to create safe and inclusive spaces for those seeking comfort and spiritual connection during these difficult times.

10 killed, 3 wounded in racist shooting at Buffalo supermarket, officials say

We are holding the victims and their families and the entire Buffalo community in love and light in this heartbreaking time. The racist and anti-Semitic rationale behind this shooting - yet another attack on a community of color by a person espousing white supremacist ideology - is an echo of the ongoing call for this country to take seriously the pervasive and deadly consequences of racism.

Unitarian Universalism is committed to building a world that is more just and equitable and we have much work to do. As we make space in our hearts and in our spiritual communities for people to grieve and find sustenance, we must also prepare for the work ahead. We must continue to show up for our BIPOC and LGBTQIA siblings and communities, work to elect leaders at all levels that will take action to end identity-based oppression, marginalization and violence, and hold these leaders accountable.

Our hearts heavy with grief, we continue onward with you all.

Statement on Buffalo Shootings: "We begin with truth-telling and moving together in that truth." β€” Side With Love

Side with Love reminds us that, far from being an isolated incident, the tragic events in #Buffalo are a predictable outcome of our white supremacy culture:

This latest attack is the result of a society that is rooted in white supremacy. This violence...shows up with believing that white lives should be protected over Black lives–knowing that Black children playing on playgrounds or sleeping in their homes are killed by police without hesitation, while white assailants are taken safely into custody. It shows up with packaging genocidal movements in language like β€œReplacement Theory.” It shows up when the media calls Mike Brown an β€œ18-year-old man” and the Buffalo shooter a ”white teenager.”

We Must Confront And Dismantle White Supremacy

In the days since the most recent brutal attack on Black people took place in Buffalo, NY, the United States has once again been forced to confront our long history of racism. The stain of white supremacy has been part of American society since before we were a nation.

Additionally, throughout our history, even before we were a nation, there have been courageous and faithful civil rights leaders, most of whom were people of color, who have repeatedly shown up for justice and inspired others to fight against what President Biden just yesterday called the β€œpoison” of white supremacy.

The UUA remains steadfast in our commitment to anti-racism. We must all find the moral courage to speak out against white nationalist rhetoric that fuels ongoing violence and hate crimes. We know that the Beloved Community can be built here in the United States but only through the hard work of listening to and organizing in solidarity with those most impacted by systemic racism.

We are so grateful for the pastoral presence of UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray. She offers this message in response to the tragic shooting in Uvalde, TX:

My heart aches for the children, teachers, school staff, families, first responders, and community in Uvalde, Texas. I am lifting up the families who lost loved ones and their community, who will live with the legacy of yesterday’s violence forever in their hearts. The horrific toll of this loss of grade school children is truly beyond words. It doesn’t have to be this way.

What Is Critical Race Theory?

"It’s unfortunate that those in disagreement with the tenets of Critical Race Theory have chosen to misrepresent the arguments of and the audience for this school of legal thought instead of engaging directly with the premises, facts, and logic of its concepts." Author Sue E. Houchins, explains some of the oppositions most Americans have with the Critical Race Theory.

As Unitarian Universalists, we remain committed to dismantling racism within ourselves, our congregations, and our communities as we work to build a Beloved Community, where all people are free and can thrive.

In Tulsa, Faith Leaders Call for Massacre Reparations

Learn how local faith leaders, including Unitarian Universalists, called for reparations to be paid to the survivors and descendants of the massacre’s victims. As we take the time to remember this terrible event, we must also actively combat the continuing racism in this country and acknowledge that reparations are only the beginning of repair.

UU the Vote and UU College of Social Justice are excited to announce the UU the Vote Legacy Fellowship for UU Young Adults and/or Black, Indigenous, and people of color Unitarian Universalists. This Fellowship recognizes and supports leaders in our faith community who carry on the legacy of activism and organizing that embody our faith through justice organizing and activism.

The fellowship is a 6-month program (July-November) that will recognize 6 to 8 individuals to support your work and expand your skills and capacity. Fellows will be awarded $5,000 with an additional $1,500 project budget.

The success of UU the Vote was the result of leaders engaging in multiple strategies and tactics to support our UU and larger communities. The success was defined by partnerships with frontline communities and organizations–many of which are led by and organized by young adults and BIPOC communities. The UU the Vote Legacy Fellowship is an investment in that leadership.

Transphobic and Anti-Abortion Policies are a Direct Threat to My Religious Freedom

UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray calls out the false narratives of religious liberty in recent conservative policy measures and we couldn't be more proud:

β€œReligious freedom” as originally articulated by the Edict of Torda, an historic declaration of religious freedom and pluralism from which UUs draw our religious lineage, more than 450 years ago served as a protection for minority religious views. And those safeguards are certainly why the Founding Fathers included freedom of religion in the First Amendment.

But currently, the concept of religious freedom is being misused, especially by those on the Right, as an excuse for already powerful and privileged religious movements to exclude, oppress, and circumvent the civil and human rights of people with marginalized identities.

Commission Considers Changes to the Seven Principles

The Seven Principles of Unitarian Universalism have stood as a statement of fundamental faith values unaltered for nearly forty years, not meant to tell UUs what they have to believe, but as a guide for people who choose to participate in UU communities. They explain the heart of the UU faith.

They could be changing, though, as a six-member commission and the General Assembly consider possible revisions to the portion of the Unitarian Universalist Association’s bylaws that includes the Principles and Purposes, and the Six Sources of the faith.

Will there be eight Principles? Or three? Or some other statement defining Unitarian Universalism and its purpose in the twenty-first century?

Juneteenth is a collective opportunity for all of us to honor this historic celebration of the end of slavery in America - an institution that laid the basis for anti-Black racism and oppression that persists today.

And while we celebrate, may we also reflect of slavery's long legacy and reaffirm our commitments to disrupting and dismantling the capitalist, racist and, malicious systems of oppression still woven tightly into so many institutions we depend on.

Our work continues, as people of faith and conscience, to repair the harms caused by racism, restore the dignity and power of Black people, and reimagine our world in a way where racism, bigotry, and hatred are obliterated.

This Trans Herbalist Is Sharing the Secrets of Gender-Affirming Herbalism

We love this article from Them offering a more inclusive holistic perspective on mainstream medicine.

Herbalism is a practice that reconnects people to the land, to their bodies, and to each other β€” truths that can be especially meaningful for trans people, who too often face a slate of indignities when seeking care within mainstream medicine.

While herbalism does not replace access to emergency medical treatment, surgery, and pharmaceuticals, it offers a vital supplement to conventional healthcare for trans and queer communities. Herbal medicine helps trans people to claim agency of their own bodies and to bypass institutional gatekeeping over who has access to comprehensive healthcare.

And by Pride I don’t just mean a parade, a Tea dance, or even a march. What I mean is now more than ever we must find the strength to live our truth unapologetically. We must find the force of will to fight like hell."

Photos from Unitarian Universalist Association's post

When Unitarian Universalists come together - whether in person or online - we make a powerful impact. Each year, our annual General Assembly gives us an opportunity to amplify our experience in worship, grow our personal and professional networks, and share our love for one another and for this faith in deeply meaningful ways.

Another GA has come and gone. Last week we concluded our multi-platform General Assembly. Enjoy these photos from various events during GA.

The Trans History You Weren’t Taught in Schools

Trans, non-binary, and gender-queer people have long been absent from the mainstream stories of history despite always being present. Fortunately, historians are now beginning to look more carefully to find and amplify their important stories. We are committed to widening our own circle of history as we use our platforms to lift up the trans and non-binary folks in Unitarian Universalist communities today. #Pride

Often erased from history, scholars are now realizing that transgender and nonbinary people have existed in most human societies across time.

From Juneteenth to Reparations: Reclaiming Our Stolen Stories

The narratives and stories that Black people, journalists, and media-makers create and share in community-led newspapers, visual art spaces, libraries, and other physical and digital Black gathering spaces can be useful in helping to make the world around us more loving, more easeful, more liberated, more Black. Media reparations are about saying: no more.

β€œNo” to journalism and media written with the blood of Black lives. Instead, cultural organizer Diamond K. Hardiman shares with us the practice of an invitation to collectively dream of reparative policies, interventions, and futures that will radically transform who has the capital to tell their own stories.

Learn more about how media reparations are an invitation to reclaim black stories from ideation to distribution: https://bit.ly/3ytYu0z

In order to achieve full reparations, we need to reconstruct media systems built on violence, specifically anti-Black violence.

We're resharing this video including transcription of our President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray speaking at June 24th’s rally in Portland, OR, in support of abortion access.

β€œAbortion is healthcare. We will not be silent. We will break the law. We will win.” Read the full transcription and watch the speech about the Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade.

And as Unitarian Universalists, we will not stop fighting. We must use this moment as an opportunity for profound reflection and awakening, not just in a momentary outcry, but as a basis for lasting change.
