As Muslims around the world begin their holy month of Ramadan, many begin to think about the sacrifices they need to make in order to feel closer to Allah.

What might you sacrifice to feel closer to the sacred?

Grace has more than one meaning. Outside of theology, grace refers to an elegance of presence, a refinement of movement, or an orientation of humility towards others.

Where do you notice elegance around you today?

Lovingkindness

11 April 2021 at 09:00
By: clfuu

In the typical Buddhist lovingkindness (metta) meditation, one meditates on the well-being of all. One starts within, and then widens the circle of concern outwards, first to people you love, and then to people you don’t know, and then to people who you have an issue with. Finally, one meditates on the well-being of all. Try it today.

May I be happy. May I be well. May I be safe. May I be peaceful and at ease.

May you be happy. May you be well. May you be safe. May you be peaceful and at ease.

May all beings be happy. May all beings be well. May all beings be safe. May all beings be peaceful and at ease.

Blessing

10 April 2021 at 09:00
By: clfuu

β€œAs we have been blessed, so we bless one another to be a blessing. Breathe in, breathe out, this breath we share with all that breathes. Feel the love of the universe flowing through this community, into you, and out into the universe again. Let the love of all the universeβ€”your loveβ€”flow outward, to its height, its depth, its broad extent. You are more than you know, and more beloved than you know. Take up what power is yours to create safe haven, to make of earth a heaven. Give hope to those you encounter, that they may know safety from inner and outer harm, be happy and at peace, healthy and strong, caring and joyful. Be the blessing you already are. That is enough.”

Feeding

9 April 2021 at 09:00
By: clfuu

In the early spring months when wild food is not yet abundant, my daughter and I keep a birdfeeder well-stocked with seed. She has learned to recognize the communications of the cardinals who nest in the trees around our neighborhood. It feels good to feed the birds–it feels like we’re in a relationship with a community of avian neighbors.

What or whom are you feeding with your being today? How does contributing to another’s well-being make you feel?

What does it mean to you to make a promise? What does it mean to you to keep a promise? Under what circumstances would you break a promise? How do you regain trust after a promise has been broken?

Think today about promises we make and break and the relationships they represent.

Rainbow

In the Hebrew Scriptures, the rainbow is a sign of God’s covenant with the people. It appears as the floodwaters recede from the land and reminds the people that they are loved.

What are the signs around you today that remind you that you are loved?

Covenant

Covenants are the sacred promises we make to one another that bind us together. It is important that when we stray from a covenant we take the time to return to it and repair it.

What are the sacred bonds you have with others? How do you repair those bonds when they break?

Spirit of Life

28 February 2021 at 10:00
By: clfuu

Carolyn McDade described the night she wrote the hymn Spirit of Life to Kimberly French of UU World:

β€œWhen I got to Pat’s house, I told her, β€˜I feel like a piece of dried cardboard that has lain in the attic for years. Just open wide the door, and I’ll be dust.’ I was tired, not with my community but with the world. She just sat with me, and I loved her for sitting with me.” Writing the song was the prayer that refilled her spirit.

What words or prayers refill your spirit when you feel like you’re about to fall apart?

Courage

26 February 2021 at 10:00
By: clfuu

May we open ourselves ever more fully to that Eternal Mystery which lures us onward toward life and creativity.

May we find the courage to live our faith, to speak our truth, and to strive together for a world where freedom abounds and justice truly does roll down like water.

May we know the fullness of love without fear, and the serenity of peace without turmoil.

May we hold one another in the deep and tender places with compassion, and may we grace one another by sharing our own vulnerabilities, being ever mindful of the divinity within that makes soulmates of us all.

Waterfall

By: clfuu

β€œGod, God is water sleeping
in high-piled clouds.
She is gentle drink of rain,
pooling lake, rounding pond,
angry flooding river.
She is frothy horse-maned geyser.
She is glacier on mountains and polar ice cap,
and breath-taking crystalline ideas of snowflakes.
She is frost-dance on trees.
And we, we are drops of God,
her tears of joy or sorrow,
ice crystals
and raindrops
in the ocean of her.”

Newness

6 February 2021 at 10:00
By: clfuu

At the beginning of spring, when new growth starts to appear on trees, I think of a friend I have in college who was colorblind. In his particular case, he could see the vibrant yellow-green of first growth, but not the darker, deeper greens of summer, so the time of growth and newness was magical to him every year. Each year, he experienced this magic again as if for the first time.

How can you experience something for the first time all over again?

Hygge

The Danish concept of hygge (pronounced β€œhoo-gah”) is the practice of creating warm, comfortable, cozy spaces in which to renew one’s spirit. How might you create hygge in your space today?

Joy

I know a clown who works with adults to use humor in their lives. Recently, a group of children were asked why they think she might choose to work with adults. They responded that perhaps it was because children have an easier time laughing and playing, and adults need to remember how to do that.

Where do you find joy and laughter? Think about a recent moment of joy and hold it in your heart for a moment.

Groundhogs

Each year on February 2, people congregate outside of the holes of groundhogs kept in various zoos to participate in the modern reenactment of ancient rituals that said that these furry rodents could predict the weather. Whatever one does or does not believe about the forecasting power of the groundhog, the ritual itself is a reminder that winter will end and spring is on the way.

When have you participated in a ritual whose form filled your spirit (if not its content)?

Signs of the Spirit

At the end of staff meetings in a job I used to have, we used to list things we liked and didn’t about our day, as well as what we called β€œsigns of the spirit,” moments when things just felt right, when things fell into place unexpectedly, or when it felt like we were experiencing grace.

How have you experienced β€œsigns of the spirit?”

Vital to the balance of a stone arch is the keystone, the wedge-shaped stone against which the two sides of the arch push in equal measure. In architecture, this is a vital and important role; in life, this is not a healthy situation in which to find ourselves.

In the silence of a clear night, we can see the stars, each pinpoint a ray of light emitted countless hours ago from celestial bodies many light-years away. As we look to the stars, we are reminded of our place in the universe.

What reminds you of your connection to the immensity of the universe?
