Do I count as UU or Christian?

14 March 2023 at 02:46

Just some general questions here. I align most closely with Christianity, but agree with some portions of Christian Universalism and some with Christian Unitarianism. I don't know what this makes me, I've been thinking maybe I should find which one I align more closely to and just agree to disagree on some points? I guess my only issue is that UU is a lot of religions and I am only a christian and that's confusing (not problematic) to me. Thank you!

A Hermit's Life - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

"A Hermit's Life"
Sunday, March 12, 10:50 am
Rev. Vanessa Rush Southern, Senior Minister, Preaching

A part of me dreams of being a hermit -- not all year, but part of every year, and not completely alone but a lot alone. And so I spent part of sabbatical reading about hermit's lives and the pieces that feel most gorgeous.

Rev. Vanessa Rush Southern, Senior Minister; Rev. Laura Shennum, Minister of Congregational Life; Dennis Adams, Worship Associate; Gregory Stevens, Canvass Testimony; Ben Rudiak-Gould, Songleader; Bill Ganz, Pianist

Eric Shackelford, Camera; Jonathan Silk, Communications Director; Joe Chapot, Live Chat Moderator; Thomas Brown, Sexton; Carrie Steere-Salazar, Flowers; Linda Messner, Head Usher

What brought you to this "chosen faith" of ours?

13 March 2023 at 00:19

For those who weren't raised UU and are converts like I am what was it that attracted you to this faith tradition? In a nutshell I used to follow a very conservative, even fundamentalist, form of Catholicism until I started questioning Original Sin and other crucial doctrines so I tried to find another community and found my local congregation thanks to a suggestion I found on this site a few years ago so it was the "warm of community" as well as the responsible search for truth that brought me here.

At first I thought I wouldn't stay for long and tried other communities like the Episcopalians but as my personal theology started getting farther away from anything recognizable as Christian this one felt like the one I truly belonged to and becoming a Humanist in theology confirmed that and I feel pretty happy about it.

Find a Stillness original Hungarian text

12 March 2023 at 10:55

Find a Stillness, hymn 325 out of the grey hymnal, has text from Carl G. Seaberg. The footnote says the text was based on a Unitarian Transylvanian (i.e., Hungarian) text. The rhythm, particularly in the first measures of the third and fourth systems, is very Hungarian. Anyone have the actual Hungarian text?

UU church daycare?

9 March 2023 at 22:22

Hey!

My church is seeing a boom in young families, and I'm looking into what it takes to start a church daycare in Washington state.

I'm looking between the alternatives of the daycare being a separate entity and the church renting the space to the daycare, versus the daycare being part of the church and using the space for free.

Does anyone have advice and/or resources on how to to start a UU daycare?

Really appreciate it!

"What Is A Woman?" with Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar - All Souls Unitarian Church

Are you ever afraid you might say the wrong thing or ask the wrong question? Do you wonder what to think about current debates, such as the ones about Transgender issues?  Are you unsure where and when you can raise your concerns and receive a respectful and well-considered answers? This is a message about courageous love and the problem of certainty.  On both sides of the current debate about whether a person can “change their gender” there are people who are certain.  One side says, “Absolutely not!” and the other says “Absolutely yes” and there is not much room to question.   In between these polarities most people wrestle (silently) with real questions and concerns about what is right and age-appropriate regarding gender fluidity, hormone treatments and various laws that seek to regulate gender in school sports, education and society.   Who has the authority to decide a person’s gender?  The person? Parents? Pastors? Politicians? Pediatricians? Coaches? This message is much more than a talk about gender and rights, it is a deeply personal exploration of what it means to be human and how we show up for one another.   This message was delivered on Sunday, March 5, 2023 at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar in the The Point Humanist Hour. SUBSCRIBE TO WATCH SERMONS FROM OUR MINISTERS:   WANT TO LISTEN? Question for UU Parents - Good Books for Kids?

3 March 2023 at 16:42

EDIT: Thanks everyone! I've got some good books on my to-get list now.

Are there any books you guys would recommend for a 4-5 year old? Ours is starting to ask about where our world came from, what death means, and other big questions.

I've been trying to explain in an age-appropriate way, but thought maybe some books would help her understand topics like this.

Also, since my husband and I don't have the same beliefs, I wanted to find kids books that highlight diversity of religions.

Thanks!

Is there any reason not to recognize Medicine People as Ministers?

Question is in the title. This is something that's bothered me ever since I found out about it -- we have cross-credential acknowledgement for various Christian ministers, and we take from Indigenous cultures many things depending on the congregation, but an indigenous Medicine Person does not qualify as a Minister despite having to go through their nation's training to be their nation's version of a holy person. Why not? Is this something we should have?

Is UU like this everywhere now?

A few years ago the minister where we went left and a new one came in. The sermons turned into constant talk of gender and LGBTQ equality topics. We tried 3 other UU places in the area and it was all quite similar. Lots of woke woke woke woke woke. Because of this, we left the community, but we’re thinking of trying again. Look, I’m fully accepting of anyone and everyone and have been my whole life. At a UU place, this is just preaching to the choir - everyone already is welcoming to all types! So why do we have to keep talking about it - and almost ONLY this!? It gets old. I’m much more interested in true spiritual and scientific topics. My question: is this what UU has become everywhere? What is the vibe where you live?

How has your congregation been (or not been...) discussing "Building a Beloved Community?"

2 March 2023 at 07:47

The Current UUA President, Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray, described "Building a Beloved Community" as:

"A community that practices a radically inclusive and compassionate, anti-racist, anti-oppressive, multicultural, multigenerational faith within, and acts powerfully in partnership and solidarity for justice and liberation beyond."

This concept of Beloved Community predates UU (Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King cited it but it came before him as well) yet with the recent Article Two draft I have noticed this wording and references to Building a Beloved Community occuring across UU circles.

Has your congregation(s) discussed or explored what "Building a Beloved Community" means to them?

I appreciate your thoughts and responses 🙂

Seeking community of UU seminarians

1 March 2023 at 23:31

I’m a second year MDiv student at SKSM, walking/paving a path toward ministry (whatever that ends up looking like). SKSM does a great job fostering intimacy and rigor in the virtual spaces, but I’m sad to not have greater connection with other seminarians. I have a wonderful community of friends and family, but don’t feel like many understand the discernment and formation process I’m going through. Would love to hear if there are others who feel the same.

Today's word in the #UUlent challenge is #humility. I just received my first letter from the inmate I'm corresponding with via the Unitarian Universalist prison correspondence program, and I was humbled by his enthusiasm, even amid his incarceration.

UU Specific Scripture?

28 February 2023 at 21:43

This may be a stupid question. But is there any body of scripture that’s specific to UU? I know it derives inspiration from multiple bodies of scripture but is there any text/holy book that only UUs claim?

"Civil Rights vs. Civil War" with Carlton D. Pearson - All Souls Unitarian Church

How do we manage the contradictions inherent in our group identities?  Can we authentically agree to disagree, or does going along to get along actually fracture our authenticity?  The answers to these questions are never static, but it matters that we get ahead of the questions — it’s better to address our civil rights and needs before a civil war becomes necessary!   This message was delivered on Sunday, February 26, 2023 at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma by Carlton D. Pearson in the The Point Humanist Hour.   SUBSCRIBE TO WATCH SERMONS FROM OUR MINISTERS: https://www.youtube.com/user/allsoulsunitarian  WANT TO LISTEN? In need of clarification

28 February 2023 at 15:49

Firstly, good day to anyone who reads this. This is my first ever reddit post.

Over this past weekend I was on a rabbit hole on various topics of research, one of which was the famed American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. While researching his work, I found a church he did in Oak Park Illinois which is called the Unity Temple. From there, I discovered UU, did a cursory search and for the most part, liked what I had found, and I'd even found a local church to which I went for service this past Sunday.

Now, I haven't been in a place of worship by choice in at least 20 years. As a child, I grew disillusioned with organized religion (baptized Catholic, loosely raised Christian). There are multiple things and reasons I could point out why I never stuck with it, but that isn't currently the goal of this post.

Now, I've lived a moderate, fair life which has had its own struggles, trials and tribulations as well as it's fair share of exceptionally awesome experiences and things. The one thing that really stuck to me was the intellectual melding with the spirit of "who/what are we?" and "why are we here?".

Now, I'm a fairly analytical person, I like to think, and most times often than not, I tend to over think and over analyze things in to ways that make sense to me. I look into history to see what people have done in various places and situations, and I learn from the past in order for me to live in the present and move forwards to the future. All my questions and answers are calculated off of research and learning, with the exception of the aforementioned spiritual questions.

I suppose in the easiest way of explaining, I believe in the Force from Star Wars, but not in the sense of how George Lucas wrote it, and not what the actual Jedi religion believes in. All people, all things, all beings, all matter and elements and everything is all interconnected in some way, shape or form. This fact is what I am certain of in my own way of understanding.

What I am looking for on clarification is, is the UU church right for me? Am I welcome (I know I am, but will others be there to help me in my search for knowledge and answers?). Is there anybody else who feels this way that can point me in some directions and help me focus my thoughts and feelings into a genuine way of exploitation that I can hold onto and draw strength and resolve from?

Sorry for the lengthy post, I will gladly explain more in the comments if there are any questions.

Thank you for your time.
