As you may have seen yesterday, Thomas is proud to be a professional UU Religious Educator.

And it looks like several congregations are finally at the point where they are looking for a new DRE, which is awesome! As a professional, let me give you a tip:

A search packet doesn't have to be 5 pages to be informative and compelling (we are going to look at your website), but it really does need to spell out if you are meeting the fair compensation guidelines and it helps if we know that you looked at them and can tell us which chart to look at to see if maybe this is a good move.

We want to know what you are offering. You should include whether you are using UUA guidelines for pay AND for benefits. We're going to want to know congregation size and geoindex, so please go ahead and include that. (Congregation size is vital to even knowing if your program is a good fit, anyway)

Using Minecraft to dismantle racism & ableism: My brief video for a Unitarian Universalist project.

2 February 2022 at 22:19

“MAD Pride Palace: Rolling Over Racism” is the title of my newest video, less than 11 minutes long.

I’m a quadriplegic, so to make this brief video I used the videogame Minecraft to create it with support from several caregivers & friends. This is a portfolio for our Unitarian Universalist Beloved Conversations, a program for seeking to embody racial justice as a spiritual practice.

I especially want to thank Elijah Gittens, who repeated my voice for clarity. Produced by Aciu! Institute. I played the parrot.

I would love to hear your reaction, publicly or message me.

The I Am UU project is only possible because people like you, who follow the page and share our work, also pledge to make it happen. For as little as $1 a month, you can help us make Unitarian Universalism easier to understand and share with the world and help people who are looking for *something* find out if they might be looking for liberal religion.

We depend on crowd funding, and we lose pledges all the tone as people change jobs or have kids or for hundreds of reasons, so it's vital that we also get new sponsors. And ultimately, we hope to do more than just sustain the project; we want to keep growing and offering more, because far too many of you have had the thought:

"Why didn't I know about Unitarian Universalism sooner?"

We're here to help tell people.

Spirited Identities - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on January 30, 2022. We tend to think of our identities as clearly defined and stable over time. Research shows though that our identities are complex, sometimes self-contradictory, and adaptable, as well as that they evolve over time. And that may be advantageous. We'll explore this and claiming our full identity as individuals and as a religious community.

The Many Faces of Leadership - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

"The Many Faces of Leadership" Sunday, January 30, 2022 10:50 am, Worship Service

Two days from now the Lunar New Year celebrations will begin and the Year of the Tiger will begin with it. And although being born under one of the Chinese Zodiac signs or another is supposed to have some influence on your character or disposition, perhaps each sign can also be an invitation to all of us to explore some way we can also choose to be present in the world. The Tiger is in part about leadership. And there are stories from traditional texts around the world about the different faces of leadership. Could one be yours?

Some Joy Please - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

"Some Joy Please"
Sunday, January 23, 10:50 am, Worship Service Livestream

This Sunday let's take a break from lockdown woes and worries and turn our attention to how we bring joy and pleasure into our lives. Is it a song, a favorite recipe, a good book? Hard times make us think that joy isn't possible. But we think joy and pleasures, and staying in touch with both, is the secret sauce that will get us through. Join Revs Southern and Jacks for a service with wonderful music by our Organist Reiko Oda Lane, Choir Director Mark Sumner and soloists Richard Fey, Leandra Ramm, Brielle Marina Nielson, Ben Rudiak-Gould, and Nancy Munn. A morning to ground our reflection on what gives us joy, what are our secret pleasures, what gets us through these days. More joy? Yes, please.

Suggestions for kids books?

29 January 2022 at 22:01

I'm looking for some books to share with my child - especially ones that tell about different religious stories and practices, appreciation of differences, and love of nature. Any suggestions?

My child is about 2 years old, so I'm looking for ones that would be appropriate for toddlers. But, I'm also open to favorite books for older kids too.

Unfortunately we don't live anywhere close to a UU community, so going to a congregational library isn't an option for us.

Thanks!

10 things We Want Everyone to Share About Unitarian Universalism

But, what do you tell someone about what Unitarian Universalism is? It's not simple, and it isn't the same for everyone. We do have some tips, though, about what we think is important to know:

Similar to a previous poll I posted. I'm honestly just curious.

I wanted to add an option for 'other' and 'I don't know', but ran out of poll options. If this applies to you, you can comment below!

Prophetic Religion - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on January 23, 2022. What does it mean to be a prophetic religion? The prophetic is often thought of as having to do with predicting the future, and it can involve projecting what current circumstance might mean for the future, as well as offering a vision of a more just and peaceful future. Might the prophetic also involve speaking truths in the here and now, embracing our struggles and our broken hearts even as we strive for creating that better world?

The I Am UU project is all about making it easier for you to confidently and proudly tell the world "I Am UU". We hope to inspire conversations about what it means to be Unitarian Universalist and why belonging matters to each of you. We want you to have those conversations with one another so that it is easier to have them with the people you meet in your daily life, should it come up. Some UUs seem almost ashamed of their church, they are so resistant to bringing it up, and we want to help change that.

We are not sponsored, edited, or endorsed by the UUA, but the UUA is well aware of our work. We are lay-led, crowdfunded, and grassroots, much like many of your congregations. And like a congregation, our work is too important to charge admission for! We give it away because we want people to share it and start conversations among their friends. The shares are what we work for!

If you value what we do, it helps a lot when you make a comment about it. Likes are great, but comments are more informative and help us get seen.

If you *really* value our work, we need funding, and with over ten thousand fans, it wouldn't take a lot to fund us if more people just gave a little.

"God" is not a name. The New King James Bible uses the word "gods" hundreds of times to refer (disdainfully) to deities of other cultures.

The world has worshiped thousands, possibly millions, of gods throughout history. The methods of worship and the stories told about them helped define cultures for tens of thousands of years.

Each of these gods represented the hopes and/or fears of a community. Learning about them teaches us much about humanity.

"Being UU is a choice to be part of something and letting that something help you be a better member of the various communities you move through. Unitarian Universalism is about trying to be your best self, knowing that you will occasionally fail, and trying again. It is about building and rebuilding relationships; we have to adjust and grow as we learn."

Lessons from Pandemic Chaplaincy - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

Guest Minister Rev. Lee Legault's sermon delivered on January 16, 2022. Lee Legault weathered the winter and summer 2021 COVID surges as a chaplain resident at Ascension Seton Medical Center of Austin, feeling privileged to walk beside patients and their families in the pandemic. She brings a grab bag of thoughts/advice/admonishments/assurances based on her time working with COVID patients and their families. As the Omicron variant rages, let's learn and grow together to the benefit of the interconnected web of existence of which we are all apart. Lamenting together, we may take heart that we are never truly alone.

“An Appeal for Law and Order and Common Sense”

An interfaith group of clergy leaders, responding to protests and demonstrations and the arrest of these activists, released a public statement to the local press:

“We are now confronted by a series of demonstrations by some of our Black citizens, directed and led in part by outsiders. We recognize the natural impatience of people who feel that their hopes are slow in being realized. But we are convinced that these demonstrations are unwise and untimely.”

Now, I must confess that I have altered the above ever so slightly, substituting the word “Black” for the original, “Negro”. With that one change, the condemnation of Martin Luther King Jr., which inspired his “Letter From a Birmingham Jail“, sounds almost exactly like the condemnation we hear today against #BlackLivesMatter:

Today will present many, many chances to read the words of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. There are already oh-so-many opportunities for the curious to study his work. There are many, many sch…
