Sacred Vulnerability - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

19 July 2021 at 00:00
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on July 18, 2021. We live in a culture that often encourages us to project an air of invincibility. Yet research by Brene Brown and others in the social sciences indicates that the opposite may be the key to living whole-heartedly. Being willing to embrace and express our vulnerability may be the source of authenticity, human connection, and empathy, as well as the ability to both love and accept being loved.

Relinquishment - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

11 July 2021 at 17:50

"Relinquishment" (July 11, 2021) Worship Service

As many of you know, John was Senior Minister at UUSF from 2014 until his retirement in 2017. He had earlier been President of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations, 1993-2001, among other posts in religious leadership. He first began pondering relinquishment as he gave up thousands of books before moving the West Coast. He was helped by his witty wife Gwen observing, β€œI’ve never yet seen a hearse pulling a U-Haul!” Yet some of our most difficult relinquishments are not about things – but about less material attachments. This continues to the very end. Still, we are spiritually wiser if we start the practice earlier.

We're still here - Our Journey Continues - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

4 July 2021 at 20:25
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on July 4, 2021. For over a year and a half, we have all been on an often challenging journey together, but we are still here as a religious community. As we contemplate an upcoming return to in-person church activities, our journey will change course again. What might we need to consider to smooth the potential bumps and avoid potential roadblocks when we begin that new journey?

Phoenix Rising - Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church

30 June 2021 at 00:21

The myth of the glorious Phoenix, the Firebird, rising from the ashes of its former self or from the flames of devastation is attributed to ancient Egypt. It was thought to be a sacred bird associated with the sun god.Β  In subsequent centuries other culturesβ€”Greek, Roman, Chinese, Japanese and Hindu among others were drawn to the symbol and brought different meanings to it, but rebirth or regeneration dominate.Β Β The pandemic caused world-wide devastation and now it is our challenge and opportunity to determine how our individual Phoenix rises.

Barb Rausin first came to Live Oak on its first day in the El Salido location and soon realized that she had found her first ever church home.   She came looking for community, not religion, because she had already adopted principles of zen, wicca and pacifism. What a joy to have these and so many others honored by this loving congregation.

Barb’s family is small but precious: daughter Jen, son Eric, his wife Krista and their children Arielle and Kai. None of them are local but always close at heart. Barb has lived in many places and has a widely diverse work history, starting at age 16 in Pacific Tel & Tel, l7 years in the fashion field as a retail copywriter, advertising manager, reporter for WWD. Then 12 years as co-founder, co-manager of Exportations,  15 years with diverse roles in a Fortune 500 computer corporation, years as a realtor in 3 different states…and the list goes on.

In the stream of your life - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

27 June 2021 at 18:18
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on June 27, 2021. So much of our experience of life is influenced by things we can't control. Weather, illness, coworkers, friends, family. They say we can control how we respond to things, but that does not always feel true. Mostly, Buddhism teaches, we control what we do. Our actions are what we own in the end.

Play - Fun - Humor - Love - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

21 June 2021 at 00:00
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on June 20, 2021. Getting through challenging times like this, working for justice, building the Beloved Community all require serious contemplation, hard work and allowing ourselves to feel the painful emotions that may come up. We must remember also that play, fun, and humor are necessary to sustain us. We must allow ourselves moments of joy. Love is our ultimate source of resilience, and one of the ways we express that love is through playfulness.

Tom Wyman, author of Infinitely Full of Hope: Fatherhood and the Future in an Age of Crisis and Disaster, and soon to be a first time father, believes that – despite the despair – now is not the time to give up on hope. Rather, we need to cultivate it and keep it alive.

Saying Yes - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

13 June 2021 at 17:50

"Saying Yes" (June 13, 2021) Worship Service

β€œTeach us all you can by saying yes,” Nancy Shaffer writes in a poem titled β€œCalling.” Rather than coming from some booming voice on high, the sort of calling that Shaffer describes is marked by the subtle work of learning to listen- and being willing to respond. Preaching for the last time as our ministerial intern (but not her last time in our pulpit) Meg McGuire reframes this notion of calling and reflects on what it might look like for this community going forward.

6 June 2021 at 19:40
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on June 6, 2021. The second in our series on the Noble Eightfold Path. In order to reach peace of mind, we understand how the mind and spirit work, and we make powerful intentions to keep impermanence in mind, to hold onto joy lightly, and to remember that everyone dies in the end. Does this turn out to be cheering or depressing, or both?

Dismantling Perfectionism: Bring it on! - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

6 June 2021 at 17:50

"Dismantling Perfectionism: Bring it on!" (June 6, 2021) Worship Service

There is a whole set of things that Tema Okun argues are part of White Supremacy Culture in her classic article, "White Supremacy Culture". One of them is perfectionism. Ever since I read that article I've thought most of where and how perfectionism shows up. It was one of the ones that didn't make obvious and immediate sense. And it is the one I am more and more excited to dismantle, take apart, keep some bits of and toss the rest. In our lives of spirit and connection, love and liberated life, I think it is the one that will leverage the most transformation!

This Sunday we'll formally welcome new members with a special New Member Recognition Ceremony. And there will be a special video presentation of this year's Rheiner Award. The Rheiner Award was established by the UUSF Board of Trustees in 1989 to recognize and celebrate a member of this Society for social justice activism and community service.

Marge and Barb Have Class - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

23 May 2021 at 17:50

"Marge and Barb Have Class" (May 23, 2021) Worship Service

The title of the sermon is a set of words my cousin and I saw spray painted on the side of a falling down old shed on a country road one day in Upstate New York. A good place to leap into a conversation on our obsession, perhaps, with the whole wild notion of "class".

Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on May 16, 2021. The stories we tell ourselves both as individuals and as a culture have powerful effects on how we live our lives, make meaning of our world and treat one another. Holding Ourselves Accountable: The 8th Principle and the Future of Our Faith - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

14 May 2021 at 22:45
"Holding Ourselves Accountable: The 8th Principle and the Future of Our Faith" (May 16, 2021) Worship Service

Paula Cole Jones, a Lay Leader who has been a member of All Souls Unitarian Church in Washington, D.C. for decades, was also one of the two authors of the 8th Principle and leaders of the effort to broaden and deepen when we fundamentally hold ourselves accountable for in our Principles.  She and Vanessa "met" over Zoom to discuss and debate some aspects of what the 8th Principle and the work it calls us to as UU's might mean, where we imagine it might take us.  And so we continue our reflection as we prepare as a community to vote on this Principle on June 6th at our Annual Meeting.

Arms Wide Open: Parenting as a Spiritual Path - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

10 May 2021 at 18:11
"Arms Wide Open: Parenting as a Spiritual Path" (May 9, 2021) Worship Service

I am a year and a few months from an empty nest, and halfway into a process of pulling together an anthology of writings on the place of children in our wisdom-making living. The book is a project that started as an excuse to go looking for all the gorgeous stories we don't think to tell in the midst of the work and the chores. I want us to hold up some of them together to reflect on our relationship with children as a part of our spiritual paths.

Waiting to Exhale - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

Guest Speaker Rev. Bill Sinkford's sermon delivered on May 2, 2021. Rev. Sinkford is a past president the UUA and currently serves First Unitarian Portland. When the justice system is bent against black lives, those black lives lose faith in justice until there is proof it is served. They hold their breath, bated and unsure, waiting to finally exhale when justice rings true. We have all been changed, we are all grieving, there will be more lives lost but perhaps there is still evidence for hope.

Pathways Ever Unfolding - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

19 April 2021 at 14:11
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on April 18, 2021. We, and all that is, are changing, at least ever so slightly, in every moment. We are always becoming something new. Our ever-unfolding, ever-changing nature is inevitable. Our agency lies in the choices we make as to what direction, what path, our becoming will follow. We'll explore the creative, life-giving, life-saving possibilities to which the spirit of love and life, the greater good, call us.
