The Perfect Body and Ladder - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

8 December 2020 at 00:17
β€œThe Perfect Body and Ladder" (December 6, 2020) Worship Service

The second sermon in a series on our bodies as part of our religious journeys, that is to say of how we find and make meaning in this life.

Poet and Movement-founder Sonya Renee Taylor writes and speaks and encourages others to do so about our relations to our bodies and one another. But more so she ties it to a larger notion, a spiritual stumbling block, a dangerous construct that wise folks from the Dalai Lama to Jesus have warned against -- Taylor calls it the imaginary ladder.  And how it hurts and distracts us from what is important and healing and life saving.

What's so Funny 'bout Peace, Love, and Understanding - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

6 December 2020 at 20:34
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on December 6, 2020. The election is over and our president elect is calling for unity. How do we do that on a family scale? On a community scale? How do you build relationships with people who you see more clearly now? How do you rebuild relationships with people for whom you may have lost some respect? Can you just move forward without addressing the harm that has been done?

Happy Blitzmas! - Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church

3 December 2020 at 05:25

This year, we’ve been exploring the history of the London Blitz, and finding parallels to our life in the pandemic. Christmas of 1940 found Britain under siege from air attacks by Germany – and still, they celebrated the yuletide. Perhaps we, too, β€œneed a little Christmas.”

Coming to the Table - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

30 November 2020 at 23:14
β€œComing to the Table" (November 29, 2020) Worship Service

This time of the year is usually marked by gathering and breaking bread with friends, family and neighbors. As love for one another calls us to keep our gatherings limited, virtual, or non-existent this year, the moment is ripe to remember- and reimagine. Can we bring what’s at the heart of these gatherings out into the world in new ways? What might be required of us to do so?

Healing does not equal cure - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

23 November 2020 at 00:00
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on November 22, 2020. Often, we can have a tendency to equate healing with being cured - like when we take a prescribed regimen of a medication and then get better. For trauma and other emotional wounds though, healing is more of an ongoing process, sometimes lifelong, whether individually or socially. We will explore embodied ways of approaching such healing.

β€œNow What?" (November 15, 2020) Worship Service

As the weeks after the election unfold, so will the answer, of what next.  And so we will gather words of inspiration, clarity wherever we find them, and our own reflections on this moment in history.  To that end, if you hear of words worth sharing, if you have your own reflection you'd like to share, please send it to me as we weave together an answer during this time.

15 November 2020 at 20:55
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on November 15, 2020. Both Eckhart Tolle and Byron Katie, two wisdom teachers of the current age, say that we need to see reality clearly and be present with it in the moment. "We suffer when our thoughts argue with reality," Byron Katie writes. Can this view be compatible with longing for a better world?

Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on October 25, 2020. How can American evangelicals love our current president with such fervor and passion? Sarah’s Thanksgiving - Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church

25 October 2020 at 17:09

The United States was divided into friend and foe, and many were heartsick. It was 1863, and the Unitarian editor of a popular magazine wrote an editorial begging President Lincoln for a national holiday so that β€œevery one who claims the name of American, wherever he may beβ€”in the old world or the new, on the land or on seaβ€”unite to commemorate the day.” Come join us online for our annual bread communion and to learn more about Sarah’s vision for a day of thanks.

Breathing Room - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

20 October 2020 at 00:02
β€œBreathing Room" (October 18, 2020) Worship Service

The atmosphere is toxic – from both the devastating fires across the west and the increasingly inflammatory political rhetoric - leaving us gasping for fresh air, fresh ideas – a fresh start. More than ever, we need open space to help us recoup, rejuvenate, and regenerate our spirits. How do we channel our energies to ensure that those physical, spiritual and emotional spaces are available to all people?  For our personal, collective and planetary wellbeing, we all need breathing room to get us through. Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.  - Arundhati Roy

4 October 2020 at 16:00
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on October 4, 2020. We will talk about how to step into a conflict with an open heart, armed with ways to listen and to speak our truth. There are ways to disagree with one another without being disagreeable. Resilient rather than reactive.

Forgiveness - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

3 October 2020 at 16:00
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on September 27, 2020. Forgiveness isn't easy. Sometimes we can only make a beginning in our process of forgiving others or even ourselves. If you will, please bring a little piece of ribbon or string with you when you join us for worship. We will use knots in the ribbon to represent the knots in our spirit that holding a grudge creates.

"I'm Sorry" (September 27, 2020) Worship Service

The central task of religious community, according to Rev. Mark Morrison Reed, is to uncover the bonds that bind us to one another. So, what holds us together? Without the brick and mortar, the face to face connection we’ve long relied upon, how do we stay rooted in this deeper relatedness? Meg McGuire, our new ministerial intern, will reflect on religious community and what’s possible when we come together.

We Haven’t Always Been At War With Eastasia - Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church

27 September 2020 at 21:36

In the novel 1984, George Orwell painted a terrifying picture of a country where the government ruled with such authoritarianism that even to have an individual thought was considered to be a crime. How does skepticism help us with living in a world that often shows alarming parallel’s to the world Orwell described?
