Thinking of Mother Moshan, one of the Early Zen Masters

8 March 2023 at 16:14
Thinking of Mother Moshan, one of the Early Zen Masters James Ishmael Ford March 8th is International Women’s Day. And, I find my thoughts turning again to women in Zen. While the records are scant, nonetheless there are clear traces of women who were masters of the Zen way from its emergence as a distinctive […]

My Kindergarten students have been wanting to make toy cats from wood, so that's what we did today.  To make the cats, students traced from a template I'd prepared and used Vaughan Bear Saws to make the angle cuts forming the ears and legs. The arms are made from 1/4 in. dowels inserted in holes drilled with a cordless drill. Make, fix and create... Assist others in learning lifewise.

We Remember Bloody Sunday on an Alabama Bridge

8 March 2023 at 03:00
March 7, 1965 was Bloody Sunday in Selma , Alabama .   On that day massed Alabama State Police attacked peaceful demonstrators attempting to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge on a march from Selma to the state capitol at Montgomery to protest suppression of voting rights.   Members of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) had been conducting voter registration drivesin the area since 1963 and had encounteredescalating violence.   After the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 , efforts stepped up.   On July 6 of that year SNCC leader John Lewis attempted to lead a march on the county court house to register voters.   He and other marchers were beaten and arrested.   A few days later a local judge handed down a sweep...

George Orwell on Clear Thinking, Good Writing, and, as I find it, a Spiritual Practice

George Orwell on Clear Thinking, Good Writing, and, as I find it, a Spiritual Practice James Ishmael Ford There are many spiritual practices. Some are more useful than others. Purim and Queen Esther—A Joyous Celebration With Murfin Verse

7 March 2023 at 03:00
Last night at sundown the Jewish holiday Purim began and continues until tonight’s sunset.   It is one of my favorites of all religious celebrations.   As a Rabbi who spoke at the Peace and Unity Prayer Vigil at the Islamic Foundation North in Waukegan a few years ago said. “Purim is a holy day when we are commanded to have fun.” To familiarize folks with her story and the joyous festival which commemorates it—I’m talking to my fellow Goyim—we review just what the hell went on. A young girl, Esther, is picked by a drunken Persian king to be his new bride.   She keeps her Jewish identity a secret.   Meanwhile her protector and cousin Mordecai discovers a plotto kill the king and by informing saves his life.

Naturalizing Christianity

6 March 2023 at 13:22
Taken with a Fuji X100V using Øyvind Nordhagen’s Kodak Ektar 100 Recipe Just click on a photo to enlarge it.    It has long struck me that, in the European and North American context anyway, Christianity, if it is to survive as a living and relevant religious tradition in the twenty-first century, needs consciously to naturalize itself; it needs to find ways to become an explicitly, religious naturalist tradition, or so I think. But I would think that, of course, because I’m a reasonably long-standing member of the Religious Naturalist Association (RNA) and am also the convener of the RNA’s Clergy Group. One of the places I regularly find this naturalizing process of Christianity at work in a very visible fashion is in graveyard...

A Message to our Families

6 March 2023 at 10:50
The Religious Exploration Staff at All Souls is deeply troubled by the wave of hate sweeping the United States and our own Oklahoma legislature targeting our queer families, most especially families with trans, nonbinary and/or gender exploring children and youth.  Our state currently has 34 anti-trans bills being heard by the legislature that have a very real chance of becoming Oklahoma law and changing our lives in ways we have yet to imagine. We express our unequivocal support and love for the trans people in our lives: our families, our colleagues, and the children, youth and adults in our community […] The post A Message to our Families appeared first on BeyondBelief.

conservatism

6 March 2023 at 09:02
I had a dream last night in which I had a conversation with Jimmy Carter, our former American President who is now in hospice care. I touched his arm and felt such strength in it, a hardness like my own. I mentioned how different the world would be if Ronald Reagan had not won. He knew exactly what I meant and rose up to his full height.  Carter, after all, was a true conservative. He championed American energy independence, knowing our dependence on foreign oil was a hazard to our world's future. He put solar panels on the White House as a suggestion of what what our future would best become... one in which we preserved the planet and delayed the terrible effects of global warming. Ask a conservative what they are preserving, and they'...

Illinois Gives Casimir Pulaski his Very Own Holiday

6 March 2023 at 08:09
Today is Casimir Pulaski Day.   If you just responded with a “huh?” you don’t live in Illinois where it is an official state holidaycelebrating Polish ethnic pride and political clout.    And, by the way, the Revolutionary War officer remembered as the Father of the Cavalry who died in a glorious but reckless lancer charge on British artillery at the siege of Savanah. For decades Chicago ’ s huge Polish community—the Toddling Town was the largest Polish city in the world—yearned for acceptance and proof that they had muscled their way at last to equal recognition with the city’s other major ethnic groups .   The damned Irish , who lorded it over everyone else had St. Patrick ’ s Day and two, count ‘em, two big Pa...

Sign of spring

5 March 2023 at 21:39
I went for a walk at the Norris Reservation in Norwell, Mass., today. Walking around Gordon’s Pond, I saw Skunk Cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus) beginning to sprout. Remembering Country Music’s Greatest Thrush —Patsy Cline

5 March 2023 at 07:49
Early in her career Patsy Cline worked in cowgirl outfits that her mother designed and hand made. There may not be a Don McLean song to commemorate the occasion, but sixty years ago, March 5, 1963, was surely another day the music died.  On that day a small plane carrying Patsy Cline and fellow Grand Ol’ Opry stars Cowboy Copas and Hankshaw Hawkins went down on the way home to Nashville from a Kansas City benefit.  The three stars and two others were killed in the crash in remote woods near Camden, Tennessee.   Learning that the plane was missing in the area friends from Nashville joined in the frantic search.  The crash site was discovered by Roger Miller, one of the many young artists Cline had mentored.  Roger Miller, overcome...

Happy Birthday Chicago

4 March 2023 at 08:32
The Town of Chicago was incorporated in 1833, four years before the place became a chartered City. It’s official.   Today is the 186th birthday of the City of Chicago.   Must be.   It says it right there on the official seal, “Incorporated March 4, 1837.”   Well, that just makes it the birthday of an official municipal incarnation.   Other dates could also be the occasion for breaking out the birthday cake, depending on your taste. The City, being the City, of course prefers the date when the Illinois General Assembly issued it official letter or marque granting it exclusive rights to legally fleece the citizenry within its boundaries.   In the good ol ’ days, say back in the reignsof Jane Byrne or Daley the Younger the ...

Pragmatism is true, but doesn’t work—a lesson for liberal, free religion to learn.

3 March 2023 at 03:36
Statue representing Janus Bifrons in the Vatican Museums  A short  “ thought for the day” offered to the Cambridge Unitarian Church as part of the Sunday Service of Mindful   Meditation   (Click on this link to hear a recorded version of the following piece) —o0o— One of the things I have noticed during the course of my 33 year-long involvement with the Unitarian tradition is that many, and perhaps most, people who have joined it since the end of the Second World War turn out to be Philosophical Pragmatists of one sort or another. In its most minimal form, Philosophical Pragmatism attempts to evaluate all theories or beliefs in terms of the success (or not) of their practical application. And so Unitarian ministers (like me)...

Bold New Militancy Launched Washington Woman Suffrage Procession of 1913

The stunning program cover for the 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession in Washington. The giant Women’s March on Washingtonand sister marches across the country that greeted Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2017 and they-said-it-couldn’t-be-done even larger marches a year later were seismic events that brought a broad , united, new intersessional feminism to the forefront of American social and political life after years on the defense as hard-fought gains once thought secure were under attack at every level. Mass demonstrations no matter how large, critics maintained, had lost their power as the media lost interest in them and the public became bored.   Huge anti-war demonstrations that broke all records were barely covered b...

Anointing of His Fraudulency—A Sneak Preview of Things to Come

2 March 2023 at 08:13
The right wing echo chamber was abuzz comparing their claims of a stolen election with the 1876 contest that was decided by an Electoral Commission.  More mainstream outlets like  Salon  also considered the case. Getting nostalgic for those final weeks of the last Resident as one by one his ludicrous attempts to over-turn the Presidential election results were shot down by the courts?  His last desperate attempt focused on January 6, the day that a joint session of Congress was scheduled to certify the Electoral College results and officially declare a winner.  You will recallhow that turned out, insurrection and all. Science fiction author (and former librarian) Karl Drinkwater is leaving social media: “…I’m going to close my social media accounts. They tie you in by becoming a habit. They tie you in by making you think you need continuous reinforcement. They tie you in with follower counts, and the implicit threat that if you walk … Continue reading "Another who’s leaving social media"

It’s a Hard Sell

1 March 2023 at 06:08
Talking about vulnerability is hard.  Asking people to be vulnerable is a hard sell in this culture where being tough, denying grief, perfectionism, and always having to win in order to feel good for a minute are common expectations. The … Continue reading →

Murfin Snark on a Trumpista Nightmare—Women’s History Month

1 March 2023 at 07:22
Note— Back in 2017 I seemed to have awakened channeling a Trumpista…</span> Well, that was close!   The country just escaped the annual ordeal of Black History Month.   There should be an investigation into that.   Clearly a Barack Hussain Obama Muslim Commie Plot to bring this Great Country to its knees .   We have to endure those smug Black History Minutes on our TVs and other assaults on White goodness. Now no sooner is that nightmare behind us than we discover the whole damn month of March is supposed to be given over to Women ’ s History!   Don’t get me wrong, I adore women.   Love ‘em to death!   I always open the door for Ladies and tip my MAGA cap to them.   My sainted Mother was a woman and my wife—when she i...

Happy Baba Marta (Grandma March) Day!

1 March 2023 at 06:38
The Martenitsa (мартеница) hung up outside our house this morning Susanna, my wife, spent the first six years of her life in Bulgaria and, as some of you may know, there is in that country a tradition of wearing, or hanging up on a tree, a martenitsa  on March 1st, Baba Marta (Grandma March) Day. Although, we don’t have any close Bulgarian connections today, Susanna and I still often mark the day—as we did this morning. Happy Baba Marta (Grandma March) Day!

Tower: scattered

28 February 2023 at 23:11
I’m not sure if this one is finished. I had envisioned many more fragments of words falling and heaped up, and I’m not sure if I paused here because it is done, or because I got tired of gluing tiny rectangles of paper. I’ll look at it afresh tomorrow and see.

jigs

28 February 2023 at 20:48
First thing this morning, just as I was waking up, a new jig passed through my thoughts connected with a way to add hidden splines to a mitered lid. It is interesting how the mind works. With the jig being made, I'm ready to test it and see if it does what I dreamed it will do. Make, fix and create. Assist others in learning lifewise.
