First Frog! and other firsts

2 May 2022 at 13:35
I saw the first frog in the pond this morning! I came to sit quietly earlier, saw nothing, and then when I came back a while later, there she was, sunning herself on a stone. I almost missed seeing her. She’s a darker color than the ones from last year, but still in the green […]

The De Havilland Cometβ€”Age of Commercial Jets Stumbles Out of the Gate

2 May 2022 at 04:46
BOAC passengers celebrate as they board the Comet's first Transatlantic service in front of a large crowd of dignitaries, DeHavilland and BOAC executives, and the press. The modern era of passenger jet travel was inaugurated with great celebration on May 2, 1952 by British Overseas Airway Corporation (BOAC) on its long London to Johannesburg route.Β  They were flying the De Havilland DH 106 Comet.Β  It was an aerodynamically sleek aircraft with four powerful turbojet engines buried in the root of its swept back wings near the commodious fuselage.Β  It carried 36 passengerswith plenty of leg room and reclining seats for the long flights arranged four abreast with a center aisle.Β  The lucky passenger could view the world far below them th...

Welcome Summer! Holy Beltane…

1 May 2022 at 11:25
Β  There are so many things that could be noted about May 1st. But, me, as usual, I’m going whole hog for Beltane! It’s a holiday in the calendar of my ancestors, or, some of them, anyway. In ancient Celtic cultures it’s the beginning of summer. And so its the time cattle were taken to […]

a city that artists built

1 May 2022 at 09:18
Back in the 1980’s in Eureka Springs, local artists Louis Freund and Don Kennett regularly attended Eureka Springs Chamber of Commerce meetings, attempting to give voice to the artists of our community in the shaping of our local economy. Their point was that the arts might become recognized as the driving force for a more prosperous future. Their vision fell upon rather stony ground, while in the meantime, Eureka Springs artists, selling their wares at craft shows throughout the US and in galleries downtown were busily promoting an understanding in the world at large that we are first and foremost, an arts community.Β  We do, after-all, have far more professional artists and serious non-professional artists per capita than almost any ...

May Day and Meβ€”Meetings and Marching

1 May 2022 at 03:00
It May Day! Β  This year I will forego the detailed history of the day. Β  Those who have been around this joint for a while have seen it. Β  If not check this out. Β  Suffice it to say that this is officially celebrated as Labor Day in almost every country except the United States, where the whole thing began in commemoration of the of a Chicago eight hour day strike which led to a police attack on a protest rally on May 4 where a bomb was thrown, probably by an agent provocateur in 1886. Β  That led to the trial of eight labor leaders, mostly immigrant German anarchists . Β  Four were hung, one committed suicide in his jail cell during the trial, and the other four were sentenced to prison and were ultimately pardoned by Illinois Gover...

Column: Will Anything Happen?

30 April 2022 at 18:00
Does the value of religiosity as response end at the line of the sacred circle drawn by practitioners, or does it truly make a difference outside of that circle? Ending Not With a Whimper but With a Bang Content Warningβ€”National Poetry Month 2022

30 April 2022 at 06:26
Β  So called Open Up America protestors had taken to the streets to claim their time in the lime light while progressives and true patriots others wouldn't or couldn't out of respect for pandemic protocols.Β  It was just the beginning of a movement that now terrorizes school boards and health care workers in the name of some kind of freedom to spit in everyone else's face. I was preparing a final post for National Poetry Month when I rediscoveredthis ultimate post from 2000. Β  The Coronavirus was new, the whole nation was hunkered down. Β  We had no idea that would still be going on or that we would be so weary and jaded by the whole thing and we pretendit is over. Poetry as a Multiverse Branching Out to Puerto Rico’s Decolonial Future

29 April 2022 at 16:51
A Q&A with Raquel Salas Rivera | Not all my work is meant to be translated, but when I do self-translate, the flipbook is perfect for a bilingual edition. It doesn’t give priority to either language, and that feels truer to both my process and my readership. In many ways, my readers in Spanish and those who read me in English don’t always overlap but they do correspond, to borrow a term from Jack Spicer.

Lovell Lawrence, known to my Dad and friends as "Bunny"settled things by telling the various engineers which portion of the project was theirs to do. Given that the world is moving in directions I don’t like, how do I want to respond? How can I make things better for me and mine? I’m too old to wait and see. And even if I wasn’t, I’m in no mood to suffer any more and any longer than I have to.

Music of Memory

26 April 2022 at 05:00
β€œIn an instant I’m eight years old again. I can smell the hot CafΓ© Bustelo percolating in the tiny pot on my grandmother’s stove while she plays cards with my grandfather and his childhood best friend from Argentina. Music starts to play while my aunts and uncle move the furniture so they can dance. In … Continue reading Music of Memory

Getting a Fix for that Sandburg Jonesβ€”National Poetry Month 2022

26 April 2022 at 02:39
Β  Carl Sandburg photo montage by Edward Steichen, 1936. W hatever current fashion has to say , Carl Sandburg remains one of my three all-time favorite American poets and a personal inspiration. Β  He always set his own course rejecting the obscurism of fashionable modernism, high flown rhetoric, or classical allusions in favor of plain , blunt speech . Β  Without even dipping into a handful of poems from his first great book, Chicago Poems that have been so widely anthologized that they are familiar to folks who don’t read poetry, here is a sample of his vigorous verse which stand on their merits without further introductions. Eucalyptus

26 April 2022 at 02:10
Ah, the introduced tree Californians love to hate. It grows fast, but aside from that, the plan of introducing it as a lumber tree can’t be said to have been very carefully thought out. It sheds long strips of bark that make terrific tinder in our fire-prone region, the very speed with which it grows […]

Pop Wood

25 April 2022 at 16:48
Popular Woodworking has published an excerpt from my new book in their June issue. Subscribers should watch for it arriving in their mail very soon if it's not gotten to you already.Β  In the wood shop today at the Clear Spring School we began a new unit by exploring the relationship between the thumbs and the development of a system of measure. Tomorrow we'll go deeper in exploring the inch. How many know that the inch is actually derived from the width of a man's thumb? Or that Β our own hands might be useful as a method of measure?Β  In class my student used their own thumbs to plan and measure the length of simple pivot lid wooden boxes. I want my students to become masters of measuring before the block is completed, and making small...

Poet Kim Dower Getting Crotchety Over Milkβ€”National Poetry Month 2022

25 April 2022 at 03:58
Note the milk option choices at this school lunch table.Β  Food fight in five minutes. Β  Nothing brings out the grumpy in aging boomers like me than comparing our childhoods with kids today . Β  Of course, we notoriously grouse about them spending all their time on their phones and devices instead of interreacting or playing outside . Β  But of course, they have never been allowed to be the free range kids like us who could roam our neighborhoods and towns totally unsupervised , play happily on bone-breaking playgrounds , carry knives and even firearms , and bounce around in the back of pick-up trucks . Β  Waves kidnapping panics and scolding never-let-a-child-take-a-risk nags have wiped that all away. Β  Now kids can’t play in their ...

Desert – willow

24 April 2022 at 21:18
The Latin name for desert – willow is Chilopsis linearis. What I’m holding here is slightly different, a C. x tashkentsis (we think), but as it is one of only two trees in my yard, there was no way I was going to draw it from a photograph. Close enough. I also didn’t want to […]

Where Christianity Went Wrong

24 April 2022 at 18:12
Β  presented at the Unitarian Church of Quincy, Illinois April 24, 2022 Opening words: Eugene Debs Every robber or oppressor in history has wrapped himself in a cloak of patriotism or religion, or both. Wisdom story This is a story Jesus told, modernized a little. A king called some of his subjects to a meeting, and as they came in, the King’s people carefully directed some to one side of the room and some to the other. Then the King turned to the group on his right and said: β€œI wanted to bring you here to reward you for all the good things you’ve done for me.” Now, these were ordinary people who seldom had interactions with the King, so one of them said, β€œYour majesty, it’s wonderful that you’re pleased with us, but what h...

Emergence, and the Self, What Are We

Weekly Bread #168

24 April 2022 at 11:16

May Their Memory Be a Blessing (Z”L)

24 April 2022 at 05:00
In Judaism, one of the traditional responses when someone dies is β€œmay their memory be a blessing.” It is a reminder that remembrance is not a passive act–our memories of those who have gone before us should inspire us to live their goodness in the world. Whose memory is a blessing to you today? What … Continue reading May Their Memory Be a Blessing (Z”L)

War in Ukraine Rages So do Poetsβ€”National Poetry Month 2022

Ukrainian volunteers inspect inspect damaged and abandoned Russian tanks.
