Living Purposefooly - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

11 April 2021 at 21:22
"Living Purposefooly" (April 11, 2021) Worship Service

Drawing the Fool in the Tarot cards represents new beginnings. We step out into the world with faith in the future, though we don’t know what to expect. The journey requires improvisation and trust, and a willingness to be shaped along the way. It is an invitation to walk purposefooly toward an as-yet unknown destination, also known as coddiwompling.

History - It's complicated - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

11 April 2021 at 21:17
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on April 11, 2021. It appears that our brains are wired to simplify the world for our intake. We assign heroes and villains and we forget to be curious, to ask questions, to get the rest of the story.

When Harold Hatcher gave up, He grew - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

4 April 2021 at 23:25
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on April 4, 2021. Join us this Easter Sunday for a sermon about a man who reinvented himself after giving up on people. His name, appropriately enough, was Harold Hatcher. He was a member of the UU congregation Rev. Meg served in South Carolina and he may have touched more lives after he gave up on people than he did before.

27 March 2021 at 14:44

We have said that we will return to “life as normal” when it is safe. But the whole idea of safety means different things based on our social location. How can we create a world, and a church, where safety may be available to all?Β

One of the first sermons I preached here at UUSF was a sermon on the ancient idea of Sabbath. I think, strangely, it is time to preach it again as work and life merge even more than before and we need a way to reground and refresh spirit and body.

Commitment Creates Connection - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

22 March 2021 at 00:00
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on March 21, 2021. Our commitments are central to our lives, our relationship with ourselves, with others and our world. Yet, we can over-commit, fail to live up to our commitments, find ourselves needing to renegotiate them or even withdraw from them. We'll explore the nuances of our commitments and how they have helped us make it through an extraordinarily challenging year.

Third Lap in a Four Lap Race - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

15 March 2021 at 00:00
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on March 14, 2021. March 15 marks one year since First UU Austin began social distanced worship. Since we've gone inside we have continued to explore, experiment, and expand our understanding of how we exist as a community. We are looking back at this year of rapid learning and seeing how far we have come while honoring the knowledge that we are still in the midst of it all. In this time let us take a moment to observe the world, to feel the wind and the sun, to absorb the promise that there is more good to come. We aren't yet at the end but we are getting there together.

Unitarian Ralph Waldo Emerson said that β€œThe one thing in the world, of value, is the active soul.” It is right and necessary to be informed, to struggle with ideas and theology, and to continually work toward doing good and being good. And there also comes a time to let go, and let it be.Β

Need a Little Mercy Now - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

28 February 2021 at 23:26
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on February 28, 2021. We have all been through something very difficult. Whether we lost power and water or just had to watch our family and friends lose those things and not be able to help because we couldn't get out, it has been a very traumatizing time. What does that do to a person's brain? What does that do to a person's energy? What is trauma brain? Do you have that?

Muppet Theology Rebroadcast - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

21 February 2021 at 21:56
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on February 21, 2021. Jim and Jane Henson created their lovable puppet characters over six decades ago, and the Muppets really began to gain prominence in the early 1970s. Through their decades of television and movies, what have the Muppets had to tell us about life, love and creating community?

Lessons of Love - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

15 February 2021 at 19:21
"Lessons of Love" (February 14, 2021) Worship Service

Years ago I read an article in some low-brow magazine in which a woman was reflecting on what she had taken away from all the past relationships that were long gone. Broken hearts (or breaking hearts) was only part of the story. Learning French, because she fell in love with a Frenchman, was one. There was a laundry list of how love had changed her from the superficial to the enduring. Lessons in Love.

Lunar New Year, begins next week Friday, February 12th. Although I am not in a family that has celebrated Lunar New Year,  many in our community do which is such a gift.  Especially this year, this Year of the Ox. Reading about this figure -- hardworking, reliable, honest and loyal -- am I the only one who finds herself thirsting for a world and a Year re-animated by the virtues of the Ox? Let's celebrate that!

The Wonder of Being Alive - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

1 February 2021 at 22:51
"The Wonder of Being Alive" (January 31, 2021) Worship Service

Being alive is more than just existing, more than not being dead. Adjectives abound when we talk about being alive. We can be animated. Lively. Alert. Awake. Being alive, to me, is about being in relationship. For some of us, we feel most alive when we are with other people. Others find their aliveness in nature. Many find it in art, particularly the making of art.  As we begin the slow return to spring, let’s spend some time imagining what it means to be alive in this world.

The Nature of Religious Experience and the Power of Knowing - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

25 January 2021 at 23:04
"The Nature of Religious Experience and the Power of Knowing" (January 24, 2021) Worship Service

William James in his classic text, "The Varieties of Religious Experience" outlines the qualities common to so-called religious experiences. One of them is knowing. It may be the hardest for UU's to reckon with and it may be the quality that we most need to get in touch with now in our life as a nation.

In praise of the dark - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

24 January 2021 at 21:26
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on January 24, 2021. Some people use the metaphor of darkness to mean wrongness or evil, but darkness is as sacred as light. It is in the darkness that roots grow, and it is in a time of uncertainty that people can reflect and transform the way they are going to go forward. As we say goodbye to the darkness of winter, let us pause to appreciate it a bit.

Spiritual Imagination - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

17 January 2021 at 20:48
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on January 17, 2021. Our imagination can lead to both wonderful spiritual paths and can take us down paths that can wound our spirits. On the one hand, our imagination helps us dream of a better life for ourselves and a better, more just world for all. Yet, we can also imagine things that are not true and get drawn into harmful cultural myths. Our imagination can also help sense the sacred all around us in our everyday lives.

Homosexuality and the Bible - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

11 January 2021 at 23:29
β€œHomosexuality and the Bible" (January 10, 2021) Worship Service

So much harm has been done in the name of religion and for many of us, in our lifetimes, that means messages about what it means to be LGBTQ and Christianity, grounded, we are told, in the Bible.  Hmmm.  I invite us to dig a little deeper to know the truth and understand our liberation from the lies, and maybe take some time for some healing too.
