In these difficult days, we turn to our faith for sustenance. Rev. Elizabeth Nguyen's reflection in UU World on why and how Unitarian Universalists are called create social change offers us so much of that. May it be of use.

Connecting with Our Ancestors at This Time of Year

28 October 2020 at 13:53
This time of year is full of changes, both in the natural world and within our own lives. The new year begins on November 1st in the Celtic tradition and the veil between us and our ancestors is lifted. #Samhain is the seasonal celebration that observes these transitions.

Unitarian Universalist minister Rev. Kelly Groves Dignan invites us to celebrate Samhain with an altar-building exercise and a meditation. By grounding ourselves in the elements of nature and calling upon our heritage, we embrace this as a transformative time. With the guidance of our ancestors, let us release our burdens from this year and call in something new.

According to the ancient Northern European Celtic tradition, the new year begins on November 1st. A ceremony and celebration was held for…

In this election and beyond, there are so many ways that Unitarian Universalists can take prophetic action on the political and social issues that matter most. Restrictions for religious nonprofits are often misunderstood, so we broke down the basics in this infographic for you to use and share in your congregations and communities.

Issue advocacy is unlimited for religious engagement and individual people of faith and conscience are free to speak out on any issue or candidate. We'll need to use all the tools we have in the coming weeks, so let's get educated on all ways we can make an impact as we prepare to take courageous action. #election2020 #UUtheVote

Defending the Democratic Process: A Faith Community Call to Awareness and Action

15 October 2020 at 15:32
One of the cornerstones of democracy is the assurance of a free, fair, and respected election. Free, meaning all eligible voters are able to vote safely and without hindrance; fair, meaning all the votes are counted transparently; respected, meaning the results of the election are accepted. Today we are coming to understand that our democratic inheritance is only secure when all of us are willing to defend these basic principles.

Join UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray and faith leaders at all levels from across the religious spectrum in this pledge to safeguard our democracy.

We will continue to pray for and expect a peaceful and orderly electoral outcome. But we must not be passive witnesses to the death of democracy, should the worst occur. Join with faith leaders in the pledge to safeguard our American democracy with every ounce of our God-given strength and spirit.

An Invitation to Move Toward Land Acknowledgments & Beyond

13 October 2020 at 22:09
Do you know who the Indigenous people are who live in your area and what their visions and struggles are?

For many of us, the answer is "No" because the continuation of colonial and white supremacy power structures depends on our not knowing. At General Assembly in June, Unitarian Universalists overwhelming voted to pass the Action of Immediate Witness, "Address 400 Years of White Supremacist Colonialism." Let us join in this work together.

Unitarian Universalist β€œCommon Read”

13 October 2020 at 13:44
We are excited to announce that the 2020-2021 Unitarian Universalist #CommonRead has been selected: "Breathe: A Letter to My Sons" by Imani Perry (Beacon Press 2019).

We are in the midst of a historic national reckoning with what it means to live as a Black or Brown American and systems of institutional racism that have been operating to control, traumatize, and oppress people of color since our country’s founding. As UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray has written, β€œIt matters that we support the uprisings whose goal is the liberation of Black people and communities who for too long have been crushed by white supremacy, militarism, and capitalism. We must find the sources within ourselves to give us courage in this moment."

In choosing "Breathe" as the 2020-2021 Common Read, our hope is that it nurtures this necessary courage.

A Common Read invites participants to read and discuss the same book in a given period of time.

Border Patrol agents raid faith-based immigrant aid camp for second time in two months

7 October 2020 at 20:15
We condemn the continued terrorizing of humanitarian aid workers and migrants seeking care at the No More Deaths/No MΓ‘s Muertes camp on Arizona's border with Mexico. The U.S. Border Patrol’s systematic violations of human rights and constitutional rights are criminal.

Let us echo the words of UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray: "As a religion which affirms the inherent worth and dignity of all people, we cannot and will not rest until the rights, humanity and human dignity of all people are honored and protected.”

At a gathering convened in 2017 by UUA co-presidents Rev. Sofia Betancourt, Rev. William Sinkford, and Dr. Leon Spencer, UU leaders of color were asked to share their insights into how the Association could continue moving forward in the midst of another racially charged moment. The Commission on Institutional Change was born out of that convening and in June 2020, they released a final report on the long-term cultural and institutional changes needed to redeem the essential promise and ideals of Unitarian Universalism.

The full report, "Widening the Circle of Concern," is a call for all Unitarian Universalists to reinvest and recommit to the work of building beloved community. Read their findings in full on our website: https://bit.ly/3jBeqnH.

Denial of Meade clemency emboldens voting-rights fight | Commentary

30 September 2020 at 14:12
To believe in democracy is to believe in the inherent dignity of every human being. The lies we have been told to suggest that some groups of people are more worthy of the rights of citizenship than others undermine the moral basis of our common life.

In a guest column, the president of the Unitarian Universalist Association says that Gov. Ron DeSantis' "law and order" stance and refusal to clear activist Desmond Meade puts him on the wrong side of history.

Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church

24 September 2020 at 15:32
All of us at the UUA – and across our Association – are grieving the loss of our former co-Moderator, Elandria Williams. A leader for decades throughout our Association, beginning with E’s days as a youth leader, Elandria moved incredible change in our Association and in our world. E also held this faith and all our people in deep and fierce love.

We know that innumerable people, communities and organizations across the world are grieving and honoring Elandria’s life, leadership, activism – and E's love that knew no bounds. We are honored to be in that fine company. We especially lift up in our prayers and in deep care, Elandria’s parents, Elnora and Erven Williams, and brother Frederick. May love holds us all as we lose an incomparable, indomitable leader and dear friend from among us.

We will share more information as it becomes available. Below is information from Elandria’s congregation, the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, for sending cards to the family.

It is with great sadness that the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church announces the untimely and unexpected death of our favorite daughter, Elandria Williams, a child of our church who became a dynamic denominational leader, most recently as co-moderator of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

Please surround E's parents Erven and Elnora Williams and brother Frederick with love. Those of us who taught E in Sunday School, nurtured E in youth group, empowered E as a young adult, watched E blossom as a grassroots community organizer and served with E in congregational and denominational leadership positions continue to be blessed by E's courage, E's convictions and E's gigantic heart that filled our world with love.

You are welcome to send cards to:

Florida gave more than one million former felons the right to vote. It's been a 'nightmare.'

22 September 2020 at 14:22
On #NationalVoterRegistrationDay, let's shine a light on all of the courageous and committed activists who are fighting for their rights and for a better future for us all.

Fees and fines constitute a #PollTax. Florida should let the people #VOTE!

Florida passed an initiative to restore voting eligibility to felons who had served their sentences, but more than a year later, the bill’s implementation has been fraught with legal battles, politics and confusion.

Follen Church - Unitarian Universalist

21 September 2020 at 18:00
Seeking justice as a religious community allows us to make meaning - to deepen our faith and grow in our search for truth - even while taking action to counter hate. Follen Church Society-Unitarian Universalist's worship service from Sunday is a beautiful example just how we can do that.

How has worship in your congregation or community helped you deepen your own call to work for justice?

Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray

21 September 2020 at 14:12
On Sunday, a group of right-wing protestors targeted Follen Church - Unitarian Universalist in Lexington, MA for a demonstration because of the congregation's Unitarian Universalist values. UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray was able to join the congregation's worshipful witness counter-protest, as did many others.

Our voices and our values are being heard. Much gratitude to all who continue to show up for love in these unprecedented times.

Grateful to be with the Follen Community Church in Lexington, MA this Sunday gathering in love and power in the face of being targeted for protest by a hate group. Together we are singing, praying, worshiping and declaring #BlackLivesMatter. The power of love is palpable and active in this space. And reminds us again that love is the force that drives out fear and hate.

The Abolition Movement

17 September 2020 at 11:11
We say it's time to defund the police because policing has been racist since it's creation.

"Enslavement, where the enslaver is both the maker and enforcer of law, was the first experience of policing for Black people. But through the invention of slave patrols, militias charged with enforcing the law against the enslaved, the policing powers were expanded."

https://bit.ly/2YPiada

What we talk about when we talk about addressing the savage roots of policing: justice and safety for everyone.

Find out more here: auburnseminary.org/fortification. ------ Image Description: Text says: Black, Indigenous, People of Color, people in the sex trade, people in the street economy, we’ve never been able to count on police. We’ve never been able to count on hospitals or social workers. I feel like if we want solutions to how to solve problems we need to like what Ejeris Dixon once said to me, β€œtalk to our grandparents.” And for those of us who don’t have access to our family lines, we need to talk to each other and other people in the sex trade and street economy who been figuring out how to get around wound care and how to respond to gunshot wounds. We are living through one of the greatest encyclopedias of healing resources we’ve ever had and we have an indexing problem. This is a watershed year for our faith, for this country and for our world. Who we are or decide to become in this moment will define us for decades to come. What we do will determine if we’re combatting a fully fledged white supremacist and authoritarianism or if we building movements and resilient communities to hold our representatives accountable by applying pressure, sharing resources, and taking to the streets to continue to bend the moral arc of the universe towards justice and liberation. Collectively we say β€œEnough Is Enough!” As Unitarian Universalists the mandate is clear--if we Side With Love, we center the oppressed, we show up in the face injustice, and we build community in service of creating a world in which we are all free! In 2020, when we #VoteLove, we are committing ourselves to a radical and expansive love that confronts and dismantles systems and behaviors of domination and oppression, while building thriving, inclusive and democratic communities. When we #DefeatHate, we reject, confront, and divest from systems and institutions that seek to diminish the lives, dignity, and agency of all people. This is how we UU the Vote-- today, in November, and for years to come. Take the #VoteLove Pledge, today! Join our community of folks taking action to mobilize voters in 2020 and committing to hold ourselves accountable to the radical and loving politics of our beloved Unitarian Universalist faith! Last week, a rare derecho swept through Iowa with 100+ mph winds. Many people lost homes or cars to falling trees. Thousands have been without electricity for days, their groceries spoiling in the hot weather. Gifts from donors like you have made the UUA Disaster Relief Fund available for this and other natural disasters. Now, we must raise more money to continue making grants for things like food, water, and emergency supplies. You can donate to the Disaster Relief Fund here: https://giving.uua.org/disaster-relief

Sacred Fire UU Passes On Success of Bail Fund to Local Leadership - UU the Vote

18 August 2020 at 15:46
A bail and legal defense fund created and run by Unitarian Universalists grew tenfold as donations flowed in during this summer’s protests against police violence and in support of Black lives. Rev. Nathan Hollister explains why it was so important for the fund to shift away from majority white leadership to the leadership of Black organizers. https://bit.ly/2Ycp63B

Rev. Nathan Hollister speaks to how a project he had been a part of for years achieved success like he had never imagined β€” and how the leadership then stepped aside for Black organizers to run the fund.

We Must Resist Fascist Federal Attacks on our Cities

5 August 2020 at 15:46
This is the mandate of our faith. From our history of anti-slavery abolition to our actions to abolish ICE to the passage at our 2020 General Assembly in June of two Actions of Immediate Witness that explicitly urge UUs to join the movement to defund the police, the call to us is clear: to side with the oppressed, to oppose forces of oppression, to cut through the false narrative of ‘good’ protestors and ‘bad’ protestors and stop the criminalization of resistance.

As the movement to Defend Black Lives, Defund Police, and invest in and transform our communities gains momentum, violent repressive responses from the state are also on the rise. And, as always,...

'This Is Terrorism': With No Face Masks and No Warrant, Border Patrol Agents Raid Humanitarian Aid Station in Arizona and Detain 30 Migrants

4 August 2020 at 15:46
"Border Patrol agents on Friday night raided a humanitarian aid station run by immigrant rights advocacy group No More Deaths, detaining 30 people in what activists described as a "massive show of force" aimed at intimidating the group." Since 2008, No More Deaths/No Más Muertes has been an official ministry of the Unitarian Universalist Church-Tucson.

"As always when humanitarian aid in the borderlands is targeted, those who seek care are the ones that face the brunt of these violent escalations."

First Unitarian Portland

22 July 2020 at 15:38
Sending love to First Unitarian Portland as they defend the rights of protesters.

First Unitarian Portland Joins Lawsuit to Cease Federal Presence On Our Streets. (July 21, 2020) • First UPDX Signs on as Plaintiff: First UPDX has signed on as a plaintiff to a lawsuit filed this morning in Federal Court alleging that the presence of militarized federal law enforcement personnel in Portland chills our ability to exercise our right and spiritual call to protest. The case claims that federal agents have been deployed in violation of the 10th Amendment to the Constitution that defines the separation of powers. • The Western States Center: Lead Plaintiff: The lead plaintiff in the suit is the Western States Center, one of our community justice partners that works to strengthen the organizing capacity of often marginalized communities and to promote inclusive democracy in the Pacific Northwest and Mountain States. • Why First UPDX is Joining the Suit: The church joins as a plaintiff because we believe that the unconstitutional overreach of federal agents into general policing, specifically the abduction and detention of protesters, creates heightened fear and greater barriers to exercising our right and faithful call to protest. These are times where there is much to trouble the spirit. This lawsuit is an important way for us as a faith community to bear witness and live out our faith principles. • As Unitarian Universalists, our principles uphold the right of conscience & democratic process & we strive for world community with peace, liberty & justice for all.

We are celebrating the memory and life of former UUA president, Rev. O. Eugene (Gene) Pickett. Rev. Pickett was the president of the Unitarian Universalist Association from 1979 to 1985. Rev. Pickett died peacefully on Saturday, July 18. In addition to serving as UUA President, Pickett served as minister to congregations in Florida, Virginia, Georgia, and the Church of the Larger Fellowship. He was named minister emeritus by the UUCA - Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta and the Church of the Larger Fellowship. The Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray, UUA president, remembers Rev. Pickett as being especially kind to her as she was transitioning into her role as the UUA’s president. “I am grateful for the collegiality and kindness that Gene showed me when I first began my term as UUA President,” said Rev. Frederick-Gray. “I will always remember the lovely afternoon we spent at his home and the insights he shared with me, as well as his thoughtful letters and his own reflections on his life and ministry.” Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen, who passed away in October 2017. We send our thoughts, prayers, and condolences to the Pickett family. UU World will publish a tribute to Rev. Pickett in the coming weeks.

Column: Caltech faces reckoning over its links to eugenics and sterilization movement

20 July 2020 at 15:46
"A petition calling for the removal of the name of Robert A. Millikan from buildings, programs and open spaces on the Pasadena campus has gathered 862 signatures since June 28, according to its originator, Michael Chwe, who received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Caltech in 1985 and is now a professor of political science at UCLA. The signatories include 51 faculty members and 448 alumni. "The organizers aim to force Caltech to recognize Millikan’s role in promoting the openly racist doctrine of eugenics and policies of forced sterilization and segregation in schools and housing." A Unitarian Universalist church that Millikan co-founded removed his name from a room in its building last year. https://lat.ms/3eEXVDO

The Supreme Court Just Stopped 1 Million Floridians From Voting in November

17 July 2020 at 22:53
We are disappointed with the Supreme Court’s ruling that will make it more difficult for some voters to participate in the Florida primary. Legal fees should not be a barrier for people to vote, and that's why this ruling clearly reinforces voter suppression efforts. We will continue to amplify the calls of frontline organizers in Florida, like our friends at New Florida Majority, who are speaking out and organizing against voter suppression. We will also continue to confront voter suppression through the work of our UU the Vote initiative.

The justices refused to halt Florida’s poll tax on ex-felons—and didn’t bother explaining why.

"...Black and LGBTQ+ history is bigger than just a month; it is something to be honored every single day. #NoPrideWithoutLiberation 💖💫" Thanks for this message from The Marsha P. Johnson Institute. As Pride Month comes to an end, let us remember there is no Pride without liberation and there is no Pride without protest.

For so long, Marsha’s legacy has only been heralded by the LGBTQ community. Today’s Google Doodle will not only help teach many around the world about Marsha P. Johnson, it will teach them about the work of a movement that has been historically ignored and often purposely left out of history books. Today’s Doodle of Marsha reminds people that Black and LGBTQ+ history is bigger than just a month; it is something to be honored every single day. #NoPrideWithoutLiberation 💖💫

Supreme Court Gives Religious Schools More Access to State Aid

30 June 2020 at 23:10
We are disappointed with the Supreme Court’s ruling today which further blurs the lines of the separation of church and state and undermines the purpose of the Establishment Clause. The Court must uphold individual religious freedom without privileging religious institutions or religious education, and it failed to do so today. From the New York Times: “The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that states must allow religious schools to participate in programs that provide scholarships to students attending private schools. "The decision, a victory for conservatives, was the latest in a series of Supreme Court rulings that the free exercise of religion bars the government from treating religious groups differently from secular ones. It opens the door to more public funding of religious education."

Religious schools should have the same access to scholarships and funds as other private schools, the justices ruled, in a victory for conservatives.

Supreme Court strikes down restrictive Louisiana abortion law that would have closed clinics

29 June 2020 at 15:05
In 1987, we passed a General Resolution called "Right to Choose" where we reaffirmed "the right to choose contraception and abortion as a legitimate expression of our constitutional rights." In the spirit of that resolution, the UUA applauds the Supreme Court's decision today in favor of abortion access.

Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court’s liberal justices in the ruling.

UUA Celebrates Partnership for BLUU Harbors and Havens

27 June 2020 at 14:51
Today, we are thrilled to partner with BLUU on their Havens and Harbors initiative to develop local nodes of Black communities within Unitarian Universalism. These groups will be woven into our system from the beginning. Harbors will receive covenanting community status within the UUA, and our staff will help support the congregations that host Harbors and Havens. Our partnership in growing Havens and Harbors, and the partnership of UU host congregations, is both an act of reparation and a commitment to a shared future. Please read these words from our president, and join us as we keep Althea Bernstein, a fellow Unitarian Universalist, in our hearts and prayers. If you feel called to support Althea, she has asked for donations to the following places: Paws and Reflect Farm: https://www.gofundme.com/f/Paws-and-Reflect Boys & Girls Club of Dane County: https://www.bgcdc.org/

My prayers are with Althea Bernstein, a talented and caring Unitarian Universalist young adult, who is healing from 2nd and 3rd degree burns she suffered after being attacked yesterday in Madison, WI. The attackers yelled a racial slur at her as they sprayed her with lighter fluid and a lighter was thrown into her car. Please hold Althea and her family in your hearts and prayers and join me as you are able to show your support by donating to a cause that means so much to Althea. UU the Vote 2020 General Assembly Collection

25 June 2020 at 18:00
Unitarian Universalists have the power to create meaningful change this electoral cycle. We can support organizers doing transformative work if we choose to realize our own power. In partnership with Reclaim Our Vote, we have a goal to make 100,000 phone calls to voters to give them the information they need to overcome barriers some Texas politicians and policies are placing in their way. With your help, we will complete 3 million calls nationally by Election Day! Help us reach that goal with a gift to UU the Vote today. Donate at https://bit.ly/uua-votelove
