The Ways We Grieve - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

26 October 2020 at 23:25
"The Ways We Grieve" (October 25, 2020) Worship Service

This Sunday we are going to create an altar, a community one, filled with the portraits and stories of those we love and lost, who shaped us.  It will be our honoring of the spirit of what All Souls Day and Dia De Los Muertos has made space for for centuries -- paying homage, bringing the living spirit of life that endures back close to hold us.

American Civil Religion - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

25 October 2020 at 19:40
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on October 25, 2020. How can American evangelicals love our current president with such fervor and passion? We can go back to the early days of the European and British immigrants from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. How could you tell if you were one of God's chosen? You are wealthy and healthy and blessed.

Sarah’s Thanksgiving - Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church

25 October 2020 at 17:09

The United States was divided into friend and foe, and many were heartsick. It was 1863, and the Unitarian editor of a popular magazine wrote an editorial begging President Lincoln for a national holiday so that β€œevery one who claims the name of American, wherever he may beβ€”in the old world or the new, on the land or on seaβ€”unite to commemorate the day.” Come join us online for our annual bread communion and to learn more about Sarah’s vision for a day of thanks.

You say β€œWelfare State” like it’s a bad thing - Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church

25 October 2020 at 17:06

Since the 1960s, the terms β€œwelfare” and β€œwelfare state” have been used disparagingly, often with scorn and stereotypes.Β  Let’s examine its history stemming from life during the Blitz in England.

November’s theme is the continuum between individualism and collectivism.Β  Fiction has given us stories about the dangers of ultra-collectivism. Reality is showing us the danger of ultra-individualism.

Breathing Room - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

20 October 2020 at 00:02
β€œBreathing Room" (October 18, 2020) Worship Service

The atmosphere is toxic – from both the devastating fires across the west and the increasingly inflammatory political rhetoric - leaving us gasping for fresh air, fresh ideas – a fresh start. More than ever, we need open space to help us recoup, rejuvenate, and regenerate our spirits. How do we channel our energies to ensure that those physical, spiritual and emotional spaces are available to all people?  For our personal, collective and planetary wellbeing, we all need breathing room to get us through. Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.  - Arundhati Roy

Forgiveness - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

3 October 2020 at 16:00
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on September 27, 2020. Forgiveness isn't easy. Sometimes we can only make a beginning in our process of forgiving others or even ourselves. If you will, please bring a little piece of ribbon or string with you when you join us for worship. We will use knots in the ribbon to represent the knots in our spirit that holding a grudge creates.

I'm Sorry - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

28 September 2020 at 23:34
"I'm Sorry" (September 27, 2020) Worship Service

The central task of religious community, according to Rev. Mark Morrison Reed, is to uncover the bonds that bind us to one another. So, what holds us together? Without the brick and mortar, the face to face connection we’ve long relied upon, how do we stay rooted in this deeper relatedness? Meg McGuire, our new ministerial intern, will reflect on religious community and what’s possible when we come together.

Balancing Acts - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

30 August 2020 at 20:40
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on August 30, 2020. In this time of Covid-19 and witnessing the violent treatment of protestors, it can seem hard to find our balance. Especially when the protestors are rising up against the violence and other horrible things being directed at black, brown and native people in the first place. Sometimes, we tend to think of balance as a sense of peace and calm, but perhaps balance also means accepting our fear, pain, anger and desire for justice in our world.

23 August 2020 at 19:00

Recorded live, Sunday August 23, 2020, The Life and Teachings of Congressman John R. Lewis, Rev. Florence Caplow.Β

β€œI believe that you see something that you want to get done, you cannot give up, and you cannot give in.” This summer we lost Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights hero, a man of towering moral integrity, and member of Congress for 33 years. When he died the whole nation mourned, and four former presidents offered words of gratitude and admiration at his funeral service. In this service we will celebrate, learn from, and be inspired by his life and word.

Turning Points - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

17 August 2020 at 19:35
"Turning Points" (August 16, 2020)

Our history is full of turning points. So are our individual lives. As we live through a time full of both danger and opportunity, let us reflect on some of the great turning points in our national history – such as women winning the right to vote in August, 1920, or same sex couples winning the right to marry just five years ago, – and how they came about.

John Buehrens is the past Senior Minister of UUSF, the past President of the Unitarian Universalist Association (1993-2001), a past honorary President of Religions for Peace, and was national co-chair of Freedom to Marry from 2002 t0 2012. He is the author of seven books, most recently, Conflagration: How the Transcendentalists Sparked the American Struggle for Racial, Gender, and Social Justice.

#2033: Back to School in Fall 2020β€”The Long and Winding Road (08-16-2020) - Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana-Champaign

16 August 2020 at 19:00

Recorded live, Sunday August 16, 2020, Back to School in Fall 2020β€”The Long and Winding Road, Janet Revell Barrett and Sam Beshers.Β

For many, the start of the school year welcomes new beginnings. This fall, however, we arrive at this point after the most unusual summer in memoryβ€”in which the isolation of the pandemic, the turning point of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the uncertainty surrounding school openings have left us wondering about the road ahead. This service, inspired by a Beatles’ tune, will look to the past to reflect on the school desegregation movement of the 1950s; the present, through the challenges of public service as a school board member; and the future, as secondary school teachers look ahead to the coming year.

Story Time - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

"Story Time" (August 9, 2020)

We are the stuff of stars. A collection of particles held together by the laws of physics and the forces of nature. We talk of free will but we move and act in accordance to evolution’s playbook. What sets us apart is our ability to reflect, to look back in time and imagine the future – to see ourselves as part of the unfolding story of time, and ask ourselves what does it mean to be human after all.

Some have begun calling 2020 "The Great Reckoning," a time when the injustices of reality are fully being called in by the promises of our possibility.
