ACLU Settles Lawsuit against Fresno County Election Official for Removing Church Polling Place in Dispute over Black Lives Matter Banners | ACLU of Northern CA

24 June 2020 at 15:21
We are celebrating this win today! Black Lives Matter, and saying so shouldn't stop a congregation from being a polling place! "The ACLU Foundation of Northern California settled a lawsuit with Fresno County over the chief elections official’s removal of a polling place at Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno – all because the church refused to cover up Black Lives Matter banners on church property. "Under the settlement agreement, the county has agreed to designate Unitarian Universalist Church as a voter ballot drop-box location for at least four years, including two presidential elections and the primaries in between. In addition, the congregation will be allowed to continue to display its signs affirming the worth and dignity of Black Lives during the elections."

The ACLU of Northern California is one of the largest ACLU affiliates in the nation with more than 100,000 members. Join us.

Juneteenth is a day that honors Black freedom and Black resistance, and centers Black people’s unique contribution to the struggle for justice in the U.S. This Juneteenth is a rare moment for our communities to proclaim in one voice that Black Lives Matter, and that we won’t tolerate anything less than justice for all our people. We are amplifying the demands of The Movement for Black Lives this Juneteenth.

"We’ve got to keep moving toward liberating practices of theology and community that reckon with how deeply our people are under threat while embodying practices of resilience, compassion, interconnectedness, and deep care that are so needed in these times. "This is exactly when we need the analysis and recommendations of the UUA’s Commission on Institutional Change (COIC)." Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray asks Unitarian Universalists everywhere to engage with the report from the UUA Commission on Institutional Change.

The COIC's analysis of structural racism in Unitarian Universalism is right on time.

So happy about this ruling! We are celebrating with the Dreamers today. Civil Rights Law Protects Gay and Transgender Workers, Supreme Court Rules

15 June 2020 at 16:36
In a historic 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court affirmed that LGBTQ+ people are protected from workplace discrimination by the 1964 Civil Rights Bill. The UUA was part of an amicus curiae brief filed with the Court in support of LGBTQ+ workers who were unjustly dismissed from their jobs due to sexual orientation or gender identity.

The court said the language of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits sex discrimination, applies to discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Stop Calling the Police and Start Eradicating Anti-Blackness

As we mourn the death of George Floyd and other Black people killed by police, and as we respond to COVID-19, which continues to disproportionately impact Black communities, the UUA denounces anti-Black racism and the inherent violence of policing. Police brutality is a symptom of white supremacy and anti-Black racism, and as people of faith and conscience dedicated to justice and liberation, we must name this truth. We specifically ask our congregations and other places of worship to develop alternatives to calling the police as one way to stop contributing to the anti-Black system of policing.

Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray

"People of faith, particularly those of us who are white progressives, need to combat the systems of criminalization in our country. Systems of policing and criminalization in this country are inherently violent, steeped in and created to reinforce white supremacy, anti-blackness, and racialized control."

I am holding George Floyd's family and loved ones in my prayers as they grieve his murder. And I offer prayers of solidarity for the people in Minneapolis, coming out with masks, working to practice physical distancing, and refusing to be silent or complicit in the violent system that murdered #GeorgeFloyd. Some powerful photos are collected here: https://bit.ly/3gryGak. People of faith, particularly those of us who are white progressives, need to combat the systems of criminalization in our country. Systems of policing and criminalization in this country are inherently violent, steeped in and created to reinforce white supremacy, anti-blackness, and racialized control. Systems like violent policing are built on the larger layers of racism and white supremacy that operate everywhere – in ourselves, in congregations, in workplaces, in public parks, in everyday interactions of white people dismissing, denigrating, attacking, and undermining Black people and Black leaders. We must all commit to dismantle white supremacy everywhere it shows up. We cannot advance the values of justice, equity, dignity, compassion, and interdependence without working to dismantle the culture of white supremacy.

The Rise of the Chaplains

"Chaplains name death for individuals and organizations in our death-phobic society. They support the dying and their loved ones at the end of life. And they help us process and make sense of death in the immediate aftermath. The chaplains at the doors of ICU rooms are whispering prayers, connecting the ill to family members through FaceTime, and, when someone dies, supporting the next of kin by phone. Chaplains usually do this work quietly, around the margins. But with the pandemic, their work has moved to the center of the American religious experience."

Their grandparents may have gone to church. But today, many Americans turn elsewhere to meet their spiritual needs.

What the Church can Learn from Octavia Butler

In order to be faithful in this hour, we can’t lie to ourselves believing that things are so bad that they can’t be changed. Nor can we believe that things will inevitably be better sooner or later. Either is tempting to believe. Neither is true.

A speculative futurist ecclesiology looks at every fault line exposed by this pandemic alongside every gift and grace it illuminates.

The Slur I Never Expected to Hear in 2020

CW: Racism and slurs directed at Asian-American people . . . . "Asian-Americans have always lived a conditional existence in which belonging is promised as long as we work harder at being good, hamming up acts of courtesy when we help our neighbors, internalizing any racial slights we encounter and always allowing them to go first. The model-minority myth is a lie that silences the structural economic racism Asian-Americans have endured and the intergenerational traumas our families have experienced from years of Western colonialism, wars and invasions. I hated talking about the model-minority myth because it was like being stuck in a feedback loop. After refuting that myth, I was dragged back to refute it again. But when the pandemic struck, I realized how deeply entrenched that myth was in the psyches of not only whites but other people of color."

As an Asian-American, I’ve been conditioned to a certain kind of unspoken racism. This pandemic has unmasked how vicious it really is.

Liberation Theology Calls Together the Religious and Political

You Might Gain Weight During Quarantine, And That's Okay

CW: "This essay discusses fatphobia, disordered eating, and weight change." "We are not required to come out of this with bodies that look the same as they did before quarantine. We don’t need to emerge on the other side more “healthy” and more “fit” than we were before—especially because both concepts of “healthy” and “fit” are rooted in fatphobia and ableism."

Practices of Self-Care and Resilience

Thankful for this reminder from our president, Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray, that it's okay not to be okay. "If you are weary, prickly, exhausted, angry – you are not alone. As Ramadan nears, prisons urged to accommodate faith needs during pandemic

29 April 2020 at 13:15
The spread of COVID-19 means some forms of religious expression are at risk. During Ramadan, faith groups (including the UUA) are pushing on prisons to accomodate all incarcerated peoples' religious needs. “Maintaining the ability to practice one’s faith is particularly important during the current crisis, as people are forced to confront potential exposure to a deadly illness, the possible suffering and mortality of sick loved ones and acquaintances, and greater social isolation and economic hardship."

(RNS) — Faith groups say accommodating all prisoners’ religious needs is more critical than ever during the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, particularly with Ramadan around the corner.

Canceled Ceremonies Hit Different for First-Generation Grads

22 April 2020 at 13:15
“It’s different in a sense because you’re the first that your family will see graduate, which is pushing you and motivating you to finish college,” says Michael Brown, a senior communications major at Wichita State. “And now that you’ve reached the finish line, you won’t get the opportunity to walk the stage and for them to see you walk the stage. It’s been a hard reality check that I won’t get the opportunity and be the first to do it in my family.”

The spread of the coronavirus forces many schools to postpone, cancel or plan virtual graduations. 2020 grads also face an uncertain job market and economy.

Amid Pandemic, the Way We Talk About Death Is Changing

19 April 2020 at 14:15
For some people & cultures, talking about death/dying is taboo. In the midst of a pandemic, this has started to change. UU minister Rev. Rosemary Lloyd of the Conversation Project says COVID-19 is “putting the brightest yellow highlighter through the truth that has always been there, which is we are mortal, and nobody knows the day or the hour of their death.”

Gov't Failure to Address Coronavirus is Sparking a Mutual Aid Revolution

16 April 2020 at 13:15
Volunteer-led mutual aid networks are filling in the gaps. But it shouldn't be this way. "Most recently, we got a mutual aid request from one of our neighbors who said the DC Mayor’s Office of Veteran Affairs referred him to us. In other words, Washington DC, the city with not only a full 'rainy day fund,' but money to spare, is offloading those in need to an anarchistic mutual aid network with little to no budget. It certainly begs the question of what kind of rainy day DC Mayor Bowser & co. are waiting for."

Coronavirus: A volunteer-driven mutual aid revolution is taking hold in disenfranchised communities across America writes Eleanor Goldfield.

Hospital Chaplains Try to Keep the Faith During the Coronavirus Pandemic

14 April 2020 at 15:05
Hospital chaplains are no strangers to daily tragedies, but COVID-19 is bringing a new set of challenges to their work. It is common for them to fear bringing the virus home to their families, and the constantly changing safety recommendations mean they have to be creative and agile in their ministry. A sincere thanks to all who are providing spiritual care in this time.

They are used to serving as vessels for others’ grief and fear, but the outbreak has changed how they practice their work, and how they feel.

Opinion | Social Distancing Is a Privilege

6 April 2020 at 21:00
Charles M. Blow for the New York Times writes: "I wholeheartedly encourage everyone who can to stay home, but I’m also aware enough to know that not everyone can or will, and that it is not simply a pathological disregard for the common good. If you are sheltering in place in an ivory tower, or even a comfortable cul-de-sac or a smartly well-appointed apartment, and your greatest concern is boredom and leftover food, please stop scolding those scratching to survive."

The idea that this virus is an equal-opportunity killer must itself be killed.

Humans Are Not The Virusβ€”Don't Be An Eco-Fascist

4 April 2020 at 14:15
Eco-fascism is an emphasis on the preservation of nature that disregards human life and is rooted in white supremacy, xenophobia, and ableism. Humans are not the virus; we are part of the interdependent web of existence and it is our relationship with the Earth that needs serious reevaluation. #7thPrinciple

Eco-fascist rhetoric finds its roots in white supremacy and xenophobia, specifically because the human life that it disregards is that of BIPOC.

β€˜Deadly as Dachau’: Activists call for mass decarceration during pandemic

2 April 2020 at 13:15
Some of the most vulnerable people in this pandemic are those who are incarcerated or detained. Prisons, jails, and detention centers are amplifiers of infectious diseases because the conditions that can keep diseases from spreading - such as social distancing - are nearly impossible to achieve. Meanwhile, ICE is still carrying out raids, using much needed PPE like N95 masks to place people in detention. The Jewish activist group Never Again Action as well as many faith-leaders and progressives are calling on our government to stop these crimes against humanity, and implement solutions to stop the spread.

BOSTON (RNS) — Progressive faith-based activists and religious leaders have mounted a nationwide push to release as many people held in jails, prisons and immigration detention facilities as possible to protect them from a coronavirus outbreak.

Don’t use coronavirus to bail out oil and gas companies

This pandemic presents an opportunity for the US to evaluate what industries really matter. A healthy future for oil and gas inevitably means a bleak future for all life on Earth. The time is now to invest in the #GreenNewDeal.

It’s outrageous that the Trump administration is considering bailing out oil and gas companies, whose problems are largely of their own making.

Practicing Community Care in Our Congregations

27 March 2020 at 16:45
Thank you Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray for your kind & consistent messaging to all of us in this time. "This pandemic is a powerful reminder of our fundamental interdependence – that we are all connected and mutually dependent on each other for our well-being. As Unitarian Universalists, we know this truth – but in response to this pandemic, it is ever more important that we live the practices of interdependence and community care. We are bound to one another - locally and globally - and each person’s health and wholeness rests in keeping the web of community strong."
