This is a time of year when well-intentioned white people experience both the impulse to practice traditions that aren't theirs, and defensiveness about those good intentions. However (with rare exceptions), your predominantly white congregation should not offer Day of the Dead/Día de los muertos services or activities, because they arise from Mexican culture. If you're not Latinx &/or your program isn't led by multiple Latinx people, it's not yours to do. (Note: All Saints, All Souls, and Samhain are their own distinct holy days. They are not "day(s) of the dead.") "Cultural misappropriation is harmful," says Rev. Connie Simon, "because it perpetuates colonial and white supremacy cultures. As long as it goes unchecked, it will perpetuate those cultures. More importantly, it disregards the dignity of those whose culture is being taken: they already live under the weight of oppression in our society. To take, distort, and misuse their culture is inconsistent with our Unitarian Universalist values." Hate cannot win. We won’t let it. Please send a message to the UU Church of Cortland to let them know you are in solidarity with them.

Alert! Sad news from the UU Church of Cortland, NY. Last night their church was painted with a swastika. This is a historic building from 1837 that helped support the abolitionist movement. Your supportive notes would be appreciated! https://www.uucortland.org

No Spiritual Surrender

Image Description: a picture of Greta Thunberg with Tokatawin Iron Eyes, an indigenous youth advocate. Tokatawin rose to prominence during Standing Rock, and has continued to be a figure in the climate justice movement. Thunberg’s caption reads: “The last two days @tokatawin and I visited the Takini School, Standing Rock Community School and the beautiful Standing Rock Reservation. Thank you everyone for your leadership, your resistance and your incredible hospitality! Indigenous peoples are at the frontline, they are often the ones who are affected the most by the climate and ecological crisis, yet they are not the ones responsible for it. They are also the ones who are leading the fight against it. We are now so desperate for their voices and knowledge how to live in balance with nature. #NoDAPL #NoKXL #WaterIsLife

This is the solidarity mainstream media refused to cover.

67 arrested at Bow power plant protest; largest NH green action since 1970s

21 October 2019 at 18:56
67 activists were arrested in what is now the largest NH green action since 1970. Rev. Kendra Ford of First Unitarian Society of Exeter was among them. From Rev. Kendra's testimony: "...We really got their attention when we said we wanted to remove the fuel from the fires of climate catastrophe. And I was afraid at first. And then I realized that this meant we were really powerful...We were there because we love this planet and we want life to flourish. We came in love."

BOW — Sixty-seven activists were arrested Saturday for trespassing at the Merrimack Station coal-burning power plant, in what organizers said was the largest environmental civil disobedience action since the Clamshell

Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray

18 October 2019 at 20:30
Six current and former UUA leaders joined together to repair relationships with each other, the UUA, and faith community, and those involved in critical roles during the 2017 southern region hiring process. These leaders were supported by two outside facilitators. The repair process set out to use restorative and transformative justice principles to address various levels of ruptured relationships.

In the Spring of 2017, our association went through a significant institutional rupture that was also intensely personal for many at the heart of those events. Since then, the UUA has recommitted itself to the work of institutional change, to living into the aspirations of our beloved faith community that is anti-racist, anti-oppressive, multicultural and deeply inclusive. At the same time, as a religious community there was also personal repair work that needed to happen, including with the institution of the UUA. Acknowledging this, a number of people impacted by the events of the Spring of 2017 gathered recently to engage in a restorative conversation. This process was not about expecting agreement nor getting to full resolution, or healing all that was broken. Rather, this was about making space to gather as people – people within a shared faith – to honor and recognize one another’s humanity with all of our feelings and experiences, and to own our own roles as well as our pain. Together, with our facilitators, we created a statement to describe our gathering, its purpose and character, which I invite you to read. I shared this as part of my recent report to the UUA Board of Trustees and have permission from those who gathered to share it widely with our larger Unitarian Universalist community. I invite you to approach this statement with curiosity and care, and to let the possibility for restorative practices open your heart. https://bit.ly/35I5AhL

This photo series shows indigenous women in traditional regalia in major US cities. Truly a powerful statement to remind us that everywhere we go, we're on Native land.

In his "Indigenizing Colonized Spaces" series, photojournalist @singsinthetimber (Apsáalooke) photographs Native women wearing traditional regalia in urban settings "in order to illustrate that, wherever a person goes, they're on Native land." #IndigenousPeoplesDay . . As part of an ongoing effort to increase Native representations of Native American culture in our collection, we've acquired prints of these photos, which will soon be available to readers in our reading rooms. . . Elijah Cummings obituary

17 October 2019 at 20:10
“When we’re dancing with the angels, the question will be asked...What did we do to make sure we kept our democracy intact? Did we stand on the sidelines and say nothing?” Longtime representative from Maryland, Elijah Cummings, was a champion for civil rights and a key advocate for inner-city Americans. Hailing from Baltimore, he never forgot his roots. His presence in American politics will be sorely missed.

Happy International Pronouns Day!

Happy International Pronouns Day! Everyone deserves basic respect. Let’s all try harder to be mindful about the diversity of people’s pronouns in the world and how to properly use everyone’s pronouns. Check out the links included in the caption for some ideas ✨ . . Posted @withrepost • @erickamoosedesigns Happy International Pronouns Day! Today we are celebrating and raising awareness for gender-neutral pronouns and the folx who use them. Please remember, folx who use gender neutral or other pronouns are never responsible for educating us. Many times, if it is a friend or family member, they may want to share more about their gender identity or answer questions that we have, but co-workers, classmates, or others in our life are never required to educate, answer personal questions, or provide us with resources. Ask for clarification of how to use their pronouns if needed, but try to pause and reflect if you have other questions. Is your question something you need to know? Is this the right time to ask personal questions? Would you ask your Grandma or clergy member? Most likely, its normal curiosity and we may think it is harmless to ask, but consider how many times the person may have already answered that question. It also takes emotional energy to answer and respond to each person and each question. Most often, the only thing we actually need to know is how to use their pronouns. Or eir pronouns. Etc. Today, we honor indigenous peoples' contributions to the world. We must protect and promote the heritage and culture of the over 573 tribes of the US, and that starts with recognizing that this land was not "discovered," but stolen. Telling Your Child Not to Stare at My Child Isn’t the Polite Thing to Do

'Pose' star Billy Porter lands historic first with Emmy win

23 September 2019 at 13:28
“Visibility and representation are the only things that create change. It’s when we’re visible that we have the power to create empathy through the way we tell stories,” he said. “Being black and gay and out and being in this position and speaking from where I get to speak from is the change. I hope that young queer people of all colors can look at me and know that they can.”

Billy Porter of FX's "Pose" is the first openly gay black man to win the Emmy for lead actor in a drama series.

"Together, we must demand bold climate action on scale with the climate crisis. We must demand the transformation of energy usage, equitable energy solutions and accountability for corporations and leaders responsible for the crisis. And spiritually, we must free ourselves from the imaginations of division, scarcity and domination - and unlock the spiritual imagination that knows we are in this together and that there is more possibility ahead for our future." Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray gave this charge before marching with Unitarian Universalists and Side with Love in New York City's Climate Strike. Thank you to all Unitarian Universalists who showed up for youth and our planet and supported the climate strikes. The culture of masculinity and its negative impacts on men

13 September 2019 at 12:15
"When boys are not allowed to express their sadness, their hurts– when they're growing up, they're essentially taught– that they shouldn't have pain. And what that does over time is it creates a condition where boys who are becoming men– stuff their pain. And so the document seeks to help people understand– one potential pathway for how men– come to be at such greater risk for experiencing greater health problems, physical health problems and mental health problems."

The American Psychological Association in 2018 published its first-ever psychological practice guidelines for boys and men. Why does consent matter? For us to understand why consent matters, we have to identify what it is. Sometimes in an effort to push back on harmful narratives, we declare consent to be simple, to follow a list of rules and criteria. But consent isn’t simple because our lives aren’t. May we stay spiritually grounded as we have conversations about consent. For this video, we spoke with faith leaders and consent advocates about what consent means to them.
