Prophecy, Power, and Potter - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

28 July 2019 at 23:21
Ministerial intern Lee Legault's sermon delivered on July 28, 2019. She asks what wisdom can we glean from the Harry Potter books on how to partner with our youth. The Harry Potter myth offers insight into the role of youth in social justice movements. How has Unitarian Universalism supported the unique charisma of our young people?

'MOVING IN A FORWARDLY DIRECTION' - A message by Laurel Carbone (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

28 July 2019 at 16:30
The message was delivered on Sunday, July 28, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Laurel Carbone, Congregant, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Everyone has failed at some point in their life. Failure can be demoralizing, but it doesn't have to be where we stay. If we ask ourselves to keep moving forward, we're honest with ourselves and others, and we handle ourselves with grace, we can move into a place of healing. There will be people and societal messages along the way that work against your progress, but there will also be helpers. Always look for the helpers, and where you can, be a helper. Laurel will share her journey of moving from an abusive childhood to being a felon in prison to being a licensed attorney. (Comments regarding her abusive childhood will be kept brief and only used to provide context.) *Music: Sarah Maud, soloist; Jordan Hehl, bass; Matt Edwards, drums; Rick Fortner, piano. 'CAN YOU FEEL ME?' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson - All Souls Unitarian Church

28 July 2019 at 15:00
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 28, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION "Just walk a mile in his moccasins. Before you abuse, criticize and accuse. If just for one hour, you could find a way. To see through his eyes, instead of your own muse." —Excerpt from Judge Softly, Mary Lathrap, 1895  An early form of trade was to barter, trading goods or services without the use of money. What are the values and virtues you trade that don't involve money and that you consider more valuable than money? Virtue has value that money cannot buy or pay for. Compassion is identifying with the pain or passion of someone else and tends to go deeper than love—love cares, but doesn't always feel. Nothing enhances relationships more than allowing compassion to be the primary virtue that buoys and buttresses our connection to the social, moral, and spiritual base and balance of community.  SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/VyLA5aveZYY SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

'FRIEND TO FOE AND BACK AGAIN' - A message by Yadenee Hailu (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

21 July 2019 at 16:30
The message was delivered on Sunday, July 21, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Yadenee Hailu, Assistant Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION This summer I had the honor of co-chairing the Right Relationship Team at General Assembly in Spokane and visiting my family in Ethiopia. My role changed drastically in these two locations, but I found a unique trend that wove the contrasting trips together. I could speak in great lengths about my love of the UU church or my roots in Ethiopia. However that would be much less helpful than the real, vulnerable, gritty, messy, tiring work of honestly engaging one's communities' shadow sides and all. What posture can aid us in maneuvering the inevitable embarrassment of not the 'other' but how our own community acts? Let's unpack our responsibility in holistic engagement with our friends turned foe. *Music: Booker Gillespie (vocals) & Myron Oliver (saxophone) with Rick Fortner (piano), Matt Edwards (drums) SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

Abundance is Already Ours - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

15 July 2019 at 00:05
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on July 14, 2019. We live in an economic system that perpetuates itself by creating a culture of scarcity. What if we stopped to appreciate and express gratitude for all that we already have? What if we worked toward a culture of abundance?

What Were You Thinking? - West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church

14 July 2019 at 20:48

by Worship Associate Gerry Meader

We will explore mindfulness and some of the ways in which we accept ideas without the benefit of any serious intellectual rigor. How do we come to accept “truth” when real evidence doesn’t exist, or when the “evidence” is misleading? And how might these precarious beliefs affect our commitment to social justice or our world view?

'AMERICAN HERETICS' - A message by Carlton D. Pearson (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

14 July 2019 at 16:30
The message was delivered on Sunday, July 14, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION I never thought anybody would ever attribute the word “heresy”, “heretic” to me. It was just wasn’t in my mind at all. It just means choice or opinion, or to choose differently from others, “heresies” in Hebrew/Greek. So, the whole idea of getting out the traditions of the traded down ideologies and ideas, and developing an independent way of thinking, is dangerous. Join me in The Point, Humanist Hour as I trade places from my traditional pulpit to talking about my experience and the subject matter in the documentary, American Heretics: The Politics of the Gospel. *Music: Majeste Pearson, vocal solo; David B. 'WHITESPACE: THE SABBATICAL MOMENTS IN OUR DAILY LIVES' - A message by Rabbi Michael Weinstein - All Souls Unitarian Church

14 July 2019 at 15:00
The message was delivered on Sunday, July 14, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rabbi Michael Weinstein, Senior Rabbi, Temple Israel. DESCRIPTION As we are engaging in the idea of trading places, really what this means is that we are adding tension to our lives. Let’s move from a place of ordinary to that of extraordinary, as we move toward intentional sacredness in our lives. With these summer months comes a sense of transition. With sabbaticals and vacations, we return refreshed. How quickly that feeling diminishes, as we return to our daily schedules and practices; the daily grind! WhiteSpace provides us with the opportunity to return refreshed, and continue to feel refreshed, with the new year before us. ABOUT Rabbi Michael Weinstein assumed the role of Senior Rabbi of Temple Israel in July of 2018, when he moved to Tulsa with his family. Michael was ordained as Rabbi in 2010.    Rabbi Weinstein has served congregations in the greater Boston, Atlanta, and Washington DC communities, in addition to spending time working in the Jewish Day School and Jewish Federation environments. Rabbi’s professional interests are relationship based, in the areas of community organizing, engagement, and creating a welcoming community.    SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 WATCH THIS MESSAGE ON YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/-IgRiCFb_Rg SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

Pausing for Perseverance - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

8 July 2019 at 00:08
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on July 7, 2019. We often think of perseverance as being strong, having grit, to keep pushing forward even against difficult obstacles. Perhaps though, perseverance also requires a time for rest and spiritual renewal, being vulnerable enough to acknowledge that we need help sometimes and need others to carry the burden for a bit while we do the things that restore us.

'BEYOND ENEMIES AND OTHERS' - A message by Rev. Diana K. Davies (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

7 July 2019 at 16:30
The message was delivered on Sunday, July 7, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Diana K. Davies, Lead Minister, First Unitarian Church of Oklahoma City, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION In early September of 2004, I was doing research in Moscow. It was a time of high tension. Two Russian planes had been blown up and a major Moscow subway station had been the site of a deadly terror attack. According to the Russian press, three Chechen women – roommates – were responsible for the plane and subway bombings. But there was a fourth roommate, believed to be at large in Moscow, who had gone missing. It turned out that I bore a resemblance to that woman. Everywhere I went, I was met with glares, stares, and harsh words. Back home in the post-9/11 U.S., the mainstream press and popular culture depicted terrorists as people who looked very different from me. So, it was a shock to find myself in the role of the feared “other,” presumed guilty, presumed to be a terrorist. I’ll share what I learned through this experience, as well as the questions that it raised for me about the legacy of violence, the tragedy of “othering,” and how we might move beyond fear.  *Music: Riley Kern, piano and vocal solo; Rick Fortner, piano SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

'FEWER WALLS, MORE TABLES' - A reflection by Riley Kern - All Souls Unitarian Church

7 July 2019 at 15:00
The reflection was delivered on Sunday, July 7, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Riley Kern, All Souls member and former Evangelical minister. DESCRIPTION Anyone who has made an intentional change in religious belief and practice has undoubtedly experienced the difficulties in navigating religious boundaries. Leaving one's tradition is rarely met with encouragement, and entering another often involves distrust and tests of sincerity. What would happen if we created communities of belief and practice with fewer walls and more tables? Can a tradition be faithful and have "open borders?" Riley will share his story of moving from fundamentalism to Unitarianism, and his experience of entering this "beyond belief" community. 'I SEE YOU' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar - All Souls Unitarian Church

30 June 2019 at 15:00
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 30, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION As a boy I used to wish I had the power to become invisible. Some people in our society feel invisible and when they are seen, other people often wish they were not. Walking in another’s shoes is not really possible in every situation. I decided to spend a night in a homeless shelter and some time on the streets with people who do not have homes in our community. I certainly cannot say I experienced what it is like to be homeless. Yet, I’ll share what I did experience and what it taught me about life, belonging, community and home. Stranger in a strange land - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

24 June 2019 at 20:11
Ministerial intern Lee Legault's sermon delivered on June 23, 2019. Join ministerial intern, Lee Legault, in reflecting on what we gain when we leave the narrow straits of Egypt and lose our ego identities in the wilderness. Psychologist C.G Jung developed a paradigm for psychological growth called individuation and believed it to be humanity's most important work. From a Jungian perspective, the Exodus account of Moses' early life becomes a map to freedom through the arduous inner work of individuation.

'REINVENTING OURSELVES' - A message by Steven L. Williams (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

23 June 2019 at 16:30
The message was delivered on Sunday, June 23, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Steven L. Williams, Pastoral Care Chaplain, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION We humans frequently reinvent ourselves, living many lives in one lifetime, trading places with ourselves as we go. Our institutions (like churches) change as we do. With self and world constantly shifting, how do we know what is passing and what is permanent? How do we embrace what we are becoming, while also affirming what we once were? How do we stay connected to each other as we change? And, when it’s time to trade places again, how do we do so with grace and love for ourselves and others? I have traded places in this church many times in my journey from infant in the nursery to minister in the pulpit, and in the process, I’ve learned some valuable lessons about transition and adaptation. Please join me on June 23 for my last sermon as your Pastoral Care Chaplain, as I prepare to trade places once more. *Music: YAVE, Rick Fortner SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

'LIKE FATHER LIKE DAUGHTER' - A message by Carlton D. Pearson (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

16 June 2019 at 16:30
The message was delivered on Sunday, June 16, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Until recently, Majeste was commonly known as Carlton Pearson’s daughter. High profile parents often shadow their children and create energy the offspring must manage. These days, it’s not so much that Majeste is the preacher’s daughter, but the other way around. Carlton gets asked if he is Majeste’s father more than her being asked “aren’t you Carlton Pearson’s daughter?” And he’s loving it. They’ve traded places, but not spaces, in each other’s life. *Music: Majeste Pearson, vocals, Majeste Pearson, vocals, David B. 'WHO'S MY FATHER?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar - All Souls Unitarian Church

16 June 2019 at 15:00
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 16, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION In preparation for a Father’s Day message, I have decided I will let my daughter be “Daddy for a Day.” I’m still not sure what to expect. Will we be eating waffles for dinner and pizza for breakfast? Will I be told to go to bed at 8:30 p.m. and finish my broccoli before I leave the table? More importantly, what will it reveal about each of us and our family roles as we swap places for 24 hours? It is said that somewhere just beyond our comfort zone is the learning zone. I expect to be over the edge of comfort and I look forward to sharing what I learn. *Music: Brooklyn Benway, soloist; Steven Hardwick, vocals/guitar; Rick Fortner, piano/vocals SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/FgLXbta42jg SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

'BREAKING THROUGH' - A message by Rev. Barbara Prose & Rev. Gerald L. Davis (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

9 June 2019 at 16:30
The message was delivered on Sunday, June 9, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry, and Rev. Gerald L. Davis, Affiliate Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Rev. Gerald Davis has been learning to maneuver with a walking stick for the visually impaired. Learning to walk with this type of aid is a high risk and greatly rewarding skill. In the spirit of our Trading Places series, I stepped into Rev. Davis's shoes. Working and walking along side Rev. Davis this month, I’ve experienced what breaking through feels like. Breaking through is taking risks, relying on physical and spiritual senses we've ignored, and learning to trust ourselves in new ways. If you are feeling stuck in any part of your life, this Trading Places Sunday is for you. Rev. Davis and I will share why we believe that there is no challenge you can’t face. *Music: Rick Fortner, piano, Matt Edwards, percussion, Josh Massad, percussion, Zachary Avery, singing bowls SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

'AN AMERICAN LEGACY' - A message by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar & Hank Fincken (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

2 June 2019 at 16:30
The message was delivered on Sunday, June 2, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, and Hank Fincken, Actor, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION In both services this Sunday, performer Hank Finken will bring to life the historic figure of Francisco Pizarro González in an unforgettable way. We will share commentary and discussion based on his epic and brutal story. Born in Spain, Francisco was poor, illegitimate, and had few prospects for success. Yet, he died in the Americas with power, status and wealth. His change of circumstances came at the cost of the destruction of the Incan Empire and many lives. To those who criticized him he would say, “I am told that God sits on a throne made of gold. Then I honor him in imitation. If you disagree, then abandon your life of soft pleasure and commit to the god of your choosing. I chose mine and he has given me a continent, riches and a name that will be remembered for all history.”  His is a story of overcoming, of success and failure, of war and deceit, of conquest and conversion. Be careful of the goals you set or the “God” you choose to believe in. Francisco’s appearance is courtesy of Tulsa Chautauqua. Special thanks to the Tulsa Historical Society & Museum for hosting Tulsa Chautauqua on the theme From Pizarro to Picasso: Hispanic Legacy in America Today, June 4 through 8. 'LEAPING TOWARDS TRUTH' - A message by Em Kianka (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

26 May 2019 at 16:30
The message was delivered on Sunday, May 26, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Em Kianka, Intern Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION There are so many different reasons why it can be so hard to trust ourselves and to take leaps of faith—leaving behind perfectionism, "what if's," fears, and anxieties—towards accepting who we are and ultimately to our freedom. No matter how comfortable we are or become with ourselves, we never quite evolve past the leap it takes to trust that small but true inner voice that speaks to who we are and listen to the call of our heart. So, how do we leap? What does it mean to recognize, listen, and honor our own inner voice of truth? *Music: Kara Staiger, soloist, Rick Fortner, piano SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/GIVE or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org
