Even When...

30 June 2019 at 13:02
We love this line from Braver/Wiser writer, Yuri Yamamoto: "I knew that the sun would rise again, and there would be a new day, a new life, and a new joy to come." We hope if you're having a day that doesn't feel like your brightest, the sun shines for you again.

As a hospital chaplain, I often listen to painful stories. We call it compassionate presence, but I may be crying inside. When words fail, I pray and sing.

UUA Applauds SCOTUS Decision to Bar Citizenship Question on Census

27 June 2019 at 20:44

The Trump Administration Targets Homeless Trans People with Devastating New HUD Policy

What a shameful policy. This is a direct attack on trans/GNC people and will discourage many from seeking the resources they need. “Access to safe and secure shelters, that not only accept trans folks but also have explicit trans non-discrimination protections in place, are a valuable resource in preventing said violence,” said Eliel Cruz, director of communications for the New York City Anti-Violence Project. “Institutional barriers that limit or altogether prohibit access trans folks have to safe and secure shelters are concerted attacks against their safety.”

The new proposal reverses Obama-era anti-discrimination protections for trans people at more than 6,7000 government-funded shelter programs.

People With 'Invisible Disabilities' Fight For Understanding

The disabled community is diverse not just in appearance, but in individual needs. To understand, we must first listen.

In employment disability discrimination charges filed between 2005 and 2010, the most commonly cited disabilities were those not immediately obvious to others.

WARD

Ursula K. LeGuin reminds us why it important for reproductive rights to stay in the hands of the individual. Remember - we are the light against the darkness of these dark ages. #ReproductiveJustice #AbortionAccess

Ursula K. Le Guin: They asked me to tell you what it was like to be twenty and pregnant in 1950 and when you tell your boyfriend you’re pregnant, he tells you about a friend of his in the army whose girl told him she was pregnant, so he got all his buddies to come and say, “We all f*cked her, so who knows who the father is?” And he laughs at the good joke…. What was it like, if you were planning to go to graduate school and get a degree and earn a living so you could support yourself and do the work you loved—what it was like to be a senior at Radcliffe and pregnant and if you bore this child, this child which the law demanded you bear and would then call “unlawful,” “illegitimate,” this child whose father denied it … What was it like? […] It’s like this: if I had dropped out of college, thrown away my education, depended on my parents … if I had done all that, which is what the anti-abortion people want me to have done, I would have borne a child for them, … the authorities, the theorists, the fundamentalists; I would have born a child for them, their child. But I would not have born my own first child, or second child, or third child. My children. The life of that fetus would have prevented, would have aborted, three other fetuses … the three wanted children, the three I had with my husband—whom, if I had not aborted the unwanted one, I would never have met … I would have been an “unwed mother” of a three-year-old in California, without work, with half an education, living off her parents…. But it is the children I have to come back to, my children Elisabeth, Caroline, Theodore, my joy, my pride, my loves. If I had not broken the law and aborted that life nobody wanted, they would have been aborted by a cruel, bigoted, and senseless law. They would never have been born. This thought I cannot bear. What was it like, in the Dark Ages when abortion was a crime, for the girl whose dad couldn’t borrow cash, as my dad could? What was it like for the girl who couldn’t even tell her dad, because he would go crazy with shame and rage? Who couldn’t tell her mother? Who had to go alone to that filthy room and put herself body and soul into the hands of a professional criminal? – because that is what every doctor who did an abortion was, whether he was an extortionist or an idealist. You know what it was like for her. You know and I know; that is why we are here. We are not going back to the Dark Ages. We are not going to let anybody in this country have that kind of power over any girl or woman. There are great powers, outside the government and in it, trying to legislate the return of darkness. We are not great powers. But we are the light. Nobody can put us out. May all of you shine very bright and steady, today and always.

Report: US Jews of color overlooked and undercounted - Religion News Service

"Jews of color say they consistently face discrimination in Jewish institutions. Jared Jackson, the founder and executive director of Jews in ALL Hues, said he keeps his cellphone handy on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, because he frequently gets calls from Jews of color denied entrance to synagogues because they aren’t recognized as Jewish."

(RNS) — A perception that Jews are white keeps many nonwhite Jews from fully participating in Jewish communal life, whether attending worship, joining a Jewish Community Center or attending a Jewish school.

This Pastor Is Putting His Faith in a Virtual Reality Church

CW: mentions of ableism, drug use Though online church isn’t a new concept, VR church is certainly a whole ‘other level. Christian Pastor D.J. Soto hosts a VR ministry for people who might normally be turned away from church. “From that anonymity comes authenticity. We can just be real authentic with each other. There’s no judgment, y’know race, color, weight; we’re just human beings talking to each other spirit to spirit.” This might be the future of church attendance. What do y'all think of this? (*A recent recording of a baptism: http://bit.ly/2Wh8xnz)

D.J. Soto believes Christianity can be renewed through worship in virtual space. His VR mega-church is even attracting atheists.

Sign the petition: Close the Homestead Child Detention Center!

The Homestead Child Detention Center in Florida is housing more than 2000 child migrants. As an “emergency influx center”, it isn’t subject to the licensing and rules for other shelters. Worse, it’s the country’s only for-profit child detention center. Putting children into prison camps is monstrous. And it sets a dangerous precedent for expanding incarceration as a solution to human rights problems. This follows a pattern of further criminalizing Black and Brown bodies across the United States and our silence means complicity. We must resist. Join us to #ShutDownHomestead, a campaign started by community groups in the Homestead area and supported by the UUA, UUSC: Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, Love Resists, Side with Love and other faith partners, including American Friends Service Committee. https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/sign-the-petition-close-the-homestead-child-detention-center?source=20190410SWHomestead_LR&referrer=group-love-resists.

How Making History Unmade A Family

Today is the 15th anniversary of the first legal same-sex marriages in the U.S. here in Massachusetts. Many of the ceremonies took place in UU churches across the state. The ceremony for the lead plaintiffs, Hillary and Julie Goodridge, was held at UUA headquarters.

Fifteen years ago, Hillary and Julie Goodridge married hours after Massachusetts became the first state to allow same-sex marriage. But less than five years later, they were getting divorced.

Government Prayer Isn’t Inclusiveβ€”Let's Not Pretend Otherwise - Rewire.News - Religion Dispatches

Today is #NationalDayofPrayer, and despite the seemingly inclusive name, one religion reigns supreme in government celebrations across the country.

In the run up to Easter and the National Day of Prayer, chaplains and guest chaplains around the nation have sowed religious division and discord as they delivered prayers at state legislatures, and now, federal courts are giving them their stamp of approval.

Why finding β€œmeaningful work” is overrated

29 April 2019 at 12:15
For some, even the concept of "meaningful work" is rooted in privilege. Marginalized folks know that work isn't as simple as "pursuing one's passion" when the bills are due. How can we challenge how we assign value to one's labor?

You shouldn’t feel pressured to follow your passion or find purpose in your job.

Black Lives of UU

17 April 2019 at 20:00
From Love Resists: "The money bail system unfairly jails individuals and saddles them with unreasonable financial burdens. Individuals awaiting trial -- people who haven’t been convicted of any crime -- spend months incarcerated simply because they can’t afford bail. Even more disheartening, research has shown that individuals who can’t afford bail are more likely to be convicted in court than someone who was released on bail. Now imagine you’re a parent facing such an unjust system. Our shared values are grounded in Universalism, which affirms that none of us are truly free when some are in jail and it calls us to live out our belief that no one is disposable. No one should be punished for want of money. We must heed the call of those who confront oppression in a system that is rigged against them. We know it is on each of us to do all we can to dismantle institutions that criminalize entire communities for their identities."

In honor of International Women's Day, we're calling on Black UUs to sign up for the #BLUUMicro30 Spring project, Babies & Bailouts to amplify the voices & stories of incarcerated women and their families and gather much needed resources for those impacted by the cash bail system. BLUU Community organizers will host a Babies & Bailouts “End Money Bail Facebook Live Panel” Watch Party + Donation Drives in their local community. The #EndMoneyBail Panel will be streamed live on BLUU’s Facebook page and website and feature a diverse range of voices active in the fight to change the money bail system. This campaign will include a facilitated post-panel discussion & donation drive where funds for a regional bailout and/or items for a local partner organization that supports women and families will be collected. ALL WILL BE WELCOME AT THE WATCH PARTIES & DISCUSSIONS. Find out more at blacklivesuu.com/babies Sign up at http://bit.ly/bluubbsignup Thank you to Free Siwatu and Allied Media Conference for inspiring this project!
