Books for a new parent...

10 January 2020 at 14:46

Hi all,

My wife and I will soon begin adding to our family of two adults and a dog, and I am interested in some really good book recommendations for new parents. I'm specifically looking for books about how to raise kind, compassionate children in a very intentional way, and I thought maybe my UU family would have some suggestions. I have already seen Whole Child/Whole Parent mentioned somewhere. Any others?

I dislike responsive readings...

4 October 2019 at 12:51

Am I alone in disliking responsive readings? It's not just the UU church, I didn't like them in the church I grew up in, either. It's not the readings I mind, it's the way they are read by the congregation in a monotone. I would rather hear one speaker read the excerpt with a meaningful presentation, than hear 50 voices read in a monotone. I have tried reading my parts in a dramatic voice, but then I just sound like I'm on something. :D

I know it's a small thing, and it doesn't detract from my overall love for the UU church. I just wondered if I was the only one. :D

Moths and Butterflies

3 July 2019 at 12:16

This has nothing to do directly with UU stuff, but I just wanted to share that we have the absolute coolest moths where I work. I love stopping to check them all out on my way into the building; it centers me and brings me so much joy. Today there was a HUGE Luna moth, and I've also seen ones that are black and white polka dots, and one I call 'pink lemonade' because it's (guess what) yellow and pink... I had no idea there was such a colorful variety of moths, and I think it's a little sad that butterflies get all the glory most of the time. Also sad that I haven't seen many butterflies this year, and just a couple of days ago saw my first bumblebee of the year. Worrying.

But anyway, props to MOTHS! I just wanted to share. :D

Does anyone else 'church hop'?

30 June 2019 at 10:45

I came to the UU because I was seeking community, primarily, but I do like the Sunday services. I like kind of in between two churches - one is 30 min and one is an hour. I really like the people at the nearer church, but feel a bit iffy about the minister and some of his topics, so we have been going to the other one on weekends when one message topic doesn't appeal.

I feel a tiny bit guilty, though I don't think there is any reason to. I give to the offering wherever I go, and both churches are doing fantastic work.

Just wondered if anyone else did this and felt a bit weird about it.
