Flower Communion - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

31 May 2020 at 16:00
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on May 31, 2020. It is once again time for one of our most beloved traditions. In a more usual year we would gather and bring a flower from somewhere along our path to share and take one from the altar. Bring a reminder of new life and the movement of the seasons and sharing it with the others gathered is a beautiful way to enjoy the bounty and goodness of our green earth. This year, due to sheltering and striving for safety within our lives, we are doing it differently. We need your help to make it happen!

Navigating the Thresholds - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

24 May 2020 at 21:26
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on May 24, 2020. It seems like we cross into new territory all of the time these days. As we cope with a pandemic, we are in the midst of crossing a threshold, but we cannot yet see what the other side of that threshold may be like. Still, there may be opportunity in the uncertainty. We may have the agency to influence the other side of the threshold.

Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on May 17, 2020. The human brain has its ways to react to trauma, either one big one or an ongoing series of daily dramas. It makes us react differently, and understanding trauma might help us understand ourselves and one another a bit better.

All will be well - Really? - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

10 May 2020 at 16:00
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on May 10, 2020. "All Will Be Well" This song is my "hit single" in the Unitarian Universalist world. I feel like it came through me, and that it changes its meaning somewhat in my life as I get more experience. From the letters people write me about it, I see that it has a life of its own, and shift its meanings for each person who listens.

20 April 2020 at 03:00
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on April 19, 2020. Sometimes when we hold on too tightly to expectations of ourselves and others, it can lead to added suffering. 'MASKS' - A homily by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar - All Souls Unitarian Church

19 April 2020 at 15:00
The homily was delivered on Sunday, April 19, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Many people around the world have taken to wearing masks. Masks are being worn in the hopes that they will keep us safe from the coronavirus. However, people also wear masks for other reasons. Join me to explore the use of various kinds of masks with the idea that on the other side of this pandemic, perhaps, we can also take off some of the other masks we tend to wear in public. There is something about this current crisis that reminds us of our vulnerability and the preciousness of life and relationships. A mask today might allow us to be in each other’s presence, whereas another mask we wear might serve to hide parts of us from one another. Let’s be thoughtful about the masks we wear and allow them to serve us. We can also be courageous in taking off our masks at the right time and in the right circumstances. This Sunday also marks the 25th anniversary of the tragic Oklahoma City Bombing. Rev. Barbara Prose and our worship, music and communications teams have created a tribute to honor the anniversary in our services. 'SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST OR SURVIVAL OF THE FRIENDLIEST?' - A sermon by Mariela PΓ©rez-Simons (Virtual Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

5 April 2020 at 15:00
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, April 5, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Mariela Pérez-Simons, Intern Minister. The recording includes a pastoral-care message from Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION “Survival of the fittest” has always been a deeply misunderstood concept, but now, after decades of research by sociologists and evolutionary biologists, a new picture of human nature has emerged, showing how human beings—in order to survive as a species—had to learn to cooperate. While we can act in selfish ways, there’s well-researched evidence that shows how we are actually wired for goodness and how altruism is part of our true nature. While our culture has an impact on our personality, there are deeper, ancient forces working through us, propelling us toward goodness, love, and collaboration. This Sunday, our ministerial intern, Mariela Pérez-Simons, makes a passionate case for cultivating altruistic love and compassion for our well-being and the well-being of others. A Vision for our time - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

2 April 2020 at 03:00
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on March 8, 2020. Though this is a difficult and challenging time, it also provides us with an opportunity to truly realize our interconnectedness - to know we can only get through this together, even as we cannot be physically together. Perhaps our vision, at least for now, may be less about the future and more about how we can treat ourselves and others with kindness and compassion in this moment and time.

'THE ART OF INTIMACY: SELF, STORY, AND UNIVERSE' - A service by Kelli McLoud-Schingen, Mariela PΓ©rez-Simons, and Rev. Barbara Prose (Virtual Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

22 March 2020 at 15:00
The service was held on Sunday, March 22, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Kelli McLoud-Schingen, Guest Speaker, Mariela Pérez-Simons, Intern Minister, and Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. DESCRIPTION Our celebration of Women’s History Month continues. “Enlightenment is intimacy with all things.” —The Zen master Dogen (1200-1253), founder of the Sōtō school of Zen On this Sunday, as we delve into the concept of the Divine Feminine, we will be exploring how we can cultivate intimacy as a spiritual practice. Intimacy with our feelings, with the earth, with one another, with spirit, with the soul, with our heartbeat… and perhaps even with the virus itself. Because we already have the impulse to connect, intimacy allows us to move from division to wholeness… We are invited to get closer and closer until we realize that we are, in fact, not separate but a part of everything. 10 March 2020 at 00:04
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on March 8, 2020. Wisdom is more than just knowledge. In fact, sometimes we have to unlearn things to have greater wisdom. Sometimes wisdom is found in uncertainty, making mistakes and the ineffable experience of our interconnectedness with the interdependent web of all existence. Sometimes wisdom is found in experiences deeper than just the cognitive.

The message was delivered on Sunday, March 8, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION There is a positive death movement happening. It involves talking openly about our bodies: how we age, get sick, and die. It includes practices like: death doulas, death dinners, death care guides and more. For so long, our culture has kept death hidden from us. Here at All Souls, we face death openly, as a way to honor our lives. We have a hospice choir and honor our dead in moving memorial services that celebrate life. I hope you’ll join me, SpiritSong, our Life Decisions Team and Nicole Ogundare, our Life Events Coordinator, as we explore who has the authority to make decisions about our lives – and our deaths.
