'FREEDOM AND THE QUEST FOR WHOLENESS' - A sermon by Mariela PΓ©rez-Simons (Contemporary Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

1 March 2020 at 17:30
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 1, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Mariela Pérez-Simons, Intern Minister. DESCRIPTION “What a long time it can take to become the person one has always been,” says the writer and teacher Parker Palmer. This sermon is inspired by Palmer’s words. I want to explore the ways in which the human soul goes into “hiding” because of acculturation, oppression, or trauma. Psychologists have a term for it, disassociation, and some indigenous cultures call it “the loss of soul” while offering options for healing, such as “soul retrieval” journeys. Join me to look at the ways we can free our truest, most authentic selves and lead lives of presence and wholeness. As Zora Neale Hurston once said, “Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place.” SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: Twitter: All Souls Church Website:

Two Parables of the Beloved Community - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

1 March 2020 at 16:00
Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on March 1, 2020. Another in our sermon series on the elements of baking. We look at bread and yeast. Rabbi Jesus told a parable about how the kingdom of heaven, or the Beloved Community is like yeast. What could that mean for us?

Graceful Resilience - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

24 February 2020 at 03:00
Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on February 23, 2020. Sometimes it takes grit and determination to stay resilient in times of challenge. Sometimes, though, like the trees, we need to be able to bend but not break when strong winds gust - change, but also hold onto our core selves, like when the river changes course around obstacles in its path. Always, we need each other to weather life's challenges.

Soul Foodie - West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church

23 February 2020 at 21:21

by Reverend Anthony Makar and

Victoria Warden, Worship Associate

If a “foodie” is someone who has refined tastes in food and drink and tends to seek out new food experiences, a “soul foodie” is someone who is like that in the religious realm. Today we talk about how Unitarian Universalism invites people to be soul foodies and what we need to be aware of in order for our worship to be hospitable to that.

23 February 2020 at 17:30
The message was delivered on Sunday, February 23, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Jan Peppler, Ph.D., Guest Speaker, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Courage isn’t reserved for the few. Every day we are each face the need to be courageous in both small and big ways. This is what the world needs more than anything: You. Authentic, Courageous, You. ABOUT Dr. Peppler is the founder of the Joseph Campbell Foundation Mythological RoundTable of Ketchum, Idaho, and co-chair of Goddess Studies for the American Academy of Religion Western Region. 'WHAT CAKE WOULD JESUS BAKE?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Contemporary Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

23 February 2020 at 17:30
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 23, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION There is a long history of using the Bible to further discrimination. During the years of legalized slavery, many Christians used biblical explanations to justify their “right” to own slaves. Today religious freedom is, again, being weaponized as a tool of discrimination and political gain by those who want to deny the rights of LGBT people, women, Muslims, immigrants and others. As All Souls stands firmly on the side of freedom of religion, what do we have to say to those who are using such language in ways that harm others? As we continue to celebrate black history and our theme of “choosing freedom” let’s look to the past to see how we can live more freely and stand on the side of liberty in our own times. 'FREEDOM FIGHTS' - A message by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

16 February 2020 at 17:30
The message was delivered on Sunday, February 16, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION “Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have the exact measure of the injustice and wrong which will be imposed on them.” These words from Fredrick Douglass seem quite fitting for the current state of the American republic. We are a county that was founded on the principle of freedom and yet freedom, and its synonym liberty, have often been a source of conflict and confusion throughout the American experiment in democracy. Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday is celebrated on Monday, once wrote: “We all declare for liberty, but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing.” Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass were both fighting for the freedom of people to be able to benefit from their own labor. Their opponents were fighting for the freedom to benefit from someone else’s labor. Despite their diametrically opposing definitions and goals, each side claimed to be fighting for freedom. As a community of free-thinkers we can learn a lot from this history about the nature of our own freedom today. Join me as we continue to explore this month’s theme of Choosing Freedom and celebrate Black History Month in a way that uplifts and enlightens us all. 'CITY OF LIGHT' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose (Traditional Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

16 February 2020 at 16:00
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 16, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. DESCRIPTION In an election year, 32 years ago, John Wolf preached this sermon and said, “If the people of this country do not feel manipulated, if their basic instincts for fair play and for justice are not confounded, then something ominous has to have happened. Human nature being what it is, as Emerson says, we have a natural affinity for truth. But we smother those natural instincts when we are so offended by what we hear being said that we despair that anything we do makes any difference, that the truth doesn’t matter, that the powers that be are in control and the ends justify the means. And when no one rises up to challenge the offenses, apathy can turn to bitterness. And bitterness easily turns to hate.” Sound familiar? Join me this President’s Day weekend, to hear how John found his way, from there, or here—back to faith, hope and love—back to freedom, reason and tolerance. We have lived through perilous times before. No one said it better than the poet Langston Hughes, who John quotes in this sermon. “We the people must redeem America. We the people must redeem the land, the mines, the plants, the rivers. The mountains and the endless plain. All, all the stretch of these great states. And the faith, the great faith we have lost—and make America America again!” SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: Twitter: All Souls Church Website:

The Gospel of Neuro-plasticity - West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church

9 February 2020 at 18:40

by Reverend Anthony Makar and

Christine Salontay, Worship Associate

Feeling like you belong is a two-way street. Part of it has to do with how others treat you—whether they are being invitational and hospitable. But an equally important part of feeling like you belong is your own openness to that, and things you do to enhance your sense of belonging. As Care of the Soul author Thomas Moore says, “Belonging is an active verb, something we do positively.”

'BEING MINDFUL OF BEING WHITE' - A message by Rev. Barbara Prose (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

9 February 2020 at 17:30
The message was delivered on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Talking about race and racism is often so painful, we want to avoid the conversation. Still, in the depths of our being, we understand that none of us will be free, until all of us are free. If we are white, that often means learning how to talk about race and how to listen to talk about race, without shutting down or acting out. This Sunday, holding a deep awareness of our own basic goodness, we will explore how becoming more mindful of being white leads to liberation. I hope you’ll join me as we explore a daily practice for freedom as a year-round response to our nation’s celebration of black history month. 'ANGELIC SERVICE: REMEMBERING HER WORK' - A sermon by Arthur F. Carter, Jr., Ph.D. (Traditional Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

9 February 2020 at 16:00
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Arthur F. Carter, Jr., Ph.D., Guest Minister. DESCRIPTION Successful organizations, institutions, and movements often have visionary leadership. When these entities fail, onlookers frequently point to leadership as the locus of failure. While not the source of hierarchy, this tendency supports top-down views of the world. Many well-intended persons regularly evaluate success from top to bottom: how does the economy work for the wealthy; how do educational systems work for the majority of students with resources; how safe is our city for the mobile, the educated and the employed? This re-reading of Mark 14.3-9 suggests that the woman who anoints Jesus with perfume reminds us how dangerously susceptible we are to replicate the systems of oppression that we claim to denounce. Mark remembers this woman as an angelic worker; her presence and actions critique our prominent top-down approaches to identity-making and history-writing. The good news (Gospel), however, is that Jesus saw her, affirmed her work, and remembers her name; The good news (Gospel) is, thus, also that each day is our own opportunity to free her story from shackled, top-down mentalities, model her labor amidst unjust systems of oppression and exploitation, and commemorate those unnamed, un-titled angels [messengers] who sustain our pursuits of love, justice, and faith. 2 February 2020 at 17:30
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 2, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION Freedom is a commodity. Freedom of choice is more to be treasured than any possession or privilege life can offer. Freedom is the power to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. The act of Freedom isn't for cowards. It takes courage to be free and a little "crazy" too. 'CHOOSING FREEDOM' - A message by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

2 February 2020 at 17:30
The message was delivered on Sunday, February 2, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Janis Joplin famously sang: “Freedom is just another word for ‘nothing left to lose.” I would contest that we all have things to lose. How do our attachments keep us from being free? What is the right relationship to have between freedom and attachment? How and when must we choose freedom over everything else? Taking inspiration in part from the remarkable story of Harriet Tubman, the worship team and I have created a service that we hope will prompt us all to live more freely. 'CHOOSING FREEDOM' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Traditional Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

2 February 2020 at 16:00
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 2, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. Courage - West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church

26 January 2020 at 22:44

by Reverend Anthony Makar and

Marty Blachly-Cross , Worship Associate

Courage is key. Maya Angelou calls it the “the most important of the virtues because without courage you can’t practice any other virtue consistently.” As for Winston Churchill, he said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” Let’s talk about courage today.

26 January 2020 at 17:30
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 26, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Mariela Pérez-Simons, Intern Minister. DESCRIPTION Throughout history, human beings have felt a sacred kinship to the sun—being the bestower of life and light. Join our ministerial intern, Mariela Pérez-Simons, on this special SUNday as she shares new reasons to have reverence for the sun. One specific reason to love the sun is proper sun exposure can boost our nervous and immune systems! We will also get a boost from the uplifting music of The Beatles. Sing with us, “Here Comes the Sun (doo-dun doo doo.)" You won't want to miss Beatles SUNday! *Music: YAVE; Dionne Lambert, soloist; Rick Fortner, piano; Recco Bennett, bass; Matt Edwards, drums   SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: Twitter: All Souls Church Website:

Dan McCollum: McCollum vs. Board of Education, 1948. Presentation and Fellowship. (1-24-2020) - Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana-Champaign

25 January 2020 at 03:00

Recorded live, Friday, January 24, 2020, Dan McCollum: McCollum vs. Board of Education, 1948. Presentation and Fellowship, Dan McCollum.

Will this Supreme Court change its mind about school prayer? That particular separation of church and state, however incomplete today, would not have become law of the land had it not been for the instigation of a local mother, Vashti McCollum of Champaign, and a minister, Philip Schug, of the local Unitarian Church.

Long ago, religion was part of the public school curriculum and informally, to some extent, remains so to the present. In the 1940s, voluntary religious instruction was provided by selected local ministers for children in Grades 4-9 during school time in public school classrooms.

Keeping with the family’s values, Vashti withdrew her son James from the instruction, but found him harassed. She sued the Board of Education and it became McCollum vs. Board of Education. She was greatly assisted in pursuing the case by Rev. Schug.

This singular history and the support of Philip Schug will be described in a presentation by Vashti’s son, Dan McCollum. McCollum is a distinguished local historian and a former mayor of Champaign.

Lessons In Leadership: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church

19 January 2020 at 22:08

by Reverend Anthony Makar and

Jeff Modzelewski, Worship Associate

When we lose touch with our heroes’ stories, we lose touch with our own powers and potentialities. We hear a call to leadership, but our response can be, Who, me? Yet the message of the life of every hero who has ever gone before us, or who may be in our midst right now, is that you don’t need to be perfect to have a dream. Today, we explore some of Dr. King’s story and how it speaks powerfully to our own today.

'THE UNIVERSE IS CORRECTING ITSELF!' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

19 January 2020 at 17:30
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 19, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION It is a main, and sometimes impossible, challenge to change what someone else created, we can only manage it as responsibly as we can. However we can change and/or save what we have created using our own innate abilities to imagine and re-imagine it creatively. We save creation by saving ourselves and save ourselves by saving creation. We must do what we can and the universe (God) will do what we can't! 'SAVING CREATION: OUR PLANETARY CHARGE' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

12 January 2020 at 17:30
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 12, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION Saving Creation may possibly be the number one planetary charge and challenge of the 21st century. We are obviously too late to save some of it, but we're never too late to begin to more aggressively correct what we have insulted and assaulted on the planet's natural virtue, value, and valor. Creation can be describe as anything invented, concocted or even imagined. It is the action or process of bringing something into existence. Correction means to free from error or inaccuracy, in accordance with fact, clarity and truth in a sense, science. Faith is an ethereal aspect of life, but in fact it's a more presenting and sometimes pressing reality in life and of it. We may not be able to save what "God" created in nature, but we certainly can change what we as humans have created that has destroyed some of what God is perceived to have created. '#DoDemocracy' - A message by Rev. Barbara Prose (Humanist Service) - All Souls Unitarian Church

12 January 2020 at 17:30
The message was delivered on Sunday, January 12, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Did you know that nearly 91,000 people were removed from the voter rolls in Oklahoma this past April? Jason Nichols, an instructor of political science at Northeastern State University, and former mayor of Tahlequah recommends we all double check our registration with our county election board to be sure we will able to vote in upcoming elections. One of the fundamental principles of our faith is the democratic process and the foundation of all our freedoms is our right to vote. Our justice team and ACTION leaders are inviting you to join with other local organizations and with congregations nationwide in voter registration, protecting voting rights and Get-Out-the-Vote drives. There are over 50 million people in the U.S.A. who are eligible to vote but who are not registered, and millions of registered voters who are infrequent voters.  This Sunday, on the same Sunday as the UUA launches their #VOTELOVE campaign, we will launch our own campaign here at All Souls, #VOTELOVEBEYONDBELIEF. I need to know I have done all I can do to make our democracy strong. Let’s learn how to do democracy together.  You’re invited! #DODEMOCRACY   #VOTELOVEBEYONDBELIEF  SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: Twitter: All Souls Church Website:
