I have noticed my body heating up in prayer, EFT, or sometimes in therapy. What does it mean?

4 April 2022 at 22:50

Crossposted from /energywork to get more insights.

I'm going through a difficult time now and I'm praying as one of my ways of coping. My therapist once said in a landmark session that the body is connected to the Spirit, and I have experienced that.

In doing energy work and LoA stuff, I've also noticed that my body heats up whenever this happens. It's not extreme heat and I don't sweat, but I definitely feel hotter. Seems to happen when I'm doing any of the above.

I've had many spiritual experiences across varied traditions (Jhanna, experiences of Christ etc) but heat is constant.

Any wisdom on this would be appreciated!

What is the Eighth Principle? - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on April 3, 2022. What started the sense that we needed another principle? Why now? Why antiracism? Why do we choose to focus on this issue as opposed to all of the other oppressions? We will vote on it at our May meeting.

Finding purpose through the side door - Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church

Many people come to a Unitarian Universalist congregation searching for answers to life's great questions.

It can be disappointing for visitors to hear that we do not have answers, religion, or a faith that can be taken home from a few short visits.

We need to make sure that the love, the encouragement, and the hope that we do have to give away is always enough to sustain them as they find their place in our community.

What's Going On? - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

"What's Going On?"
Sunday, March 27, 10:50 am, Worship Service Livestream

I want to talk about what I have been seeing and hearing the last week or two -- not about timeless and eternal questions but about what is going on around and within us all these days... at least my best guess, with a little input from my friends. It will be a time to sing, too light candles, to enjoy each other in coffee hour, to be still, to breathe. Just come, however, you are able to join in.

The Question of Legacy - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

"The Question of Legacy"
Sunday, March 20, 10:50 am, Worship Service Livestream

I've been thinking a lot about legacy. Call it mid-life, call it an eternal itch we humans scratch and an eternal question with which we wrestle. It's a grounding question, a sobering one, sometimes an inspiring one, and maybe, maybe our answer changes as we go, as the path before us twists and opens. The question of legacy!

Water Ceremony 2022 - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on March 20, 2022. A year ago, during the freeze, many of us lost our water for many days on end. Others of us who had water filled up containers to give to our neighbors and friends. We bring water to the service and share a couple of sentences about about our experience of the freeze last year as well as what water means to us.

Renewing Faith - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on March 13, 2022. In challenging, sometimes scary times such as those in which we find ourselves, it can be hard at times to maintain our faith. Perhaps we can help each other retain our faith and resilience. Perhaps faith is to be found in our struggles for love, justice and a better world - a continual process of remembering that there is beauty to be found in the struggle, even when we cannot know what the outcome may be.

UU Foster Parents

17 March 2022 at 01:20

I’m a foster parent and I’ve noticed there are very few UU foster parents compared to other local churches and their involvement in foster care. My minister explained it to me that UUs are more focused on tackling the systematic problems that cause foster care to be necessary, rather than the end result of children needing safe homes to live in.

I’m wondering if there are any UU foster parents here, or if you know of any UU Foster Care groups or ministries? It’s starting to feel pretty lonely over here.

I tried making a foster care Ministry in my own church, but there just wasn’t any interest from other congregants, and there’s been little practical support from my local congregation.

When I read about the support foster parents get in other local churches (meal trains, babysitting, baby showers, mentoring, tutoring, driving, help around the house, etc) I admit to feeling jealous or wistful. But I’m not interested in joining a Christian church, and I actively want the kids in our care to experience my congregations RE and Owl programs.

I’d really just love to talk some foster parents who are UU. I don’t know anyone else who’s a foster parent, and it would be nice to talk to other people who have similar interests, struggles, and life experiences.

By: I Am UU
This page is all about liberal religion and, specifically, Unitarian Universalism. Our goal is to make it easier to understand and share about big, important topics.

What we teach here is Unitarian Universalism. It is complex and it is rich in heritage and deep in content. If we are doing it well, it will make us all uncomfortable at times, as growth is generally uncomfortable. We understand that doesn't always fit neatly on social media, and we admit fully that we cannot encompass the whole message on any one day.

It just cannot be simplified very far and still be meaningful; the simple posts are always incomplete.

We proclaim the worth and dignity of absolutely every person and the human capacity to be a better person today than we were on our worst day. There are no monsters; there is no "other"; we are all on the same team, ultimately. Beloved Community is for absolutely everyone or it isn't complete.

We will proclaim open revelation and we will sometimes do so in scientific terms. We will proclaim humanist values in the language of faith. We will invoke the names of deities if they are relevant, and we will do so with reverence. We will say that Black Lives Matter and Love is Love and No Human is Illegal and that none of us will get all of that right all of the time; we will defer to the people most impacted for leadership in anti-oppression work and make space for them, even when that upsets people with privilege and power.

We are not here to have the most followers on Facebook and our goal isn't to sell t-shirts. We are here to affirm and promote the Principles of Unitarian Universalism as positive guidelines for sharing the planet Earth. We've been lucky that in fulfilling that mission, we have become one of the most popular and fastest growing UU social media projects, but we assure you that it is a side effect of doing what we feel called to do.

We invite respectful conversation and constructive criticism. We also understand that some people will not support our work. Some people are not going to be UUs and some UUs see things very differently. No need to level insults or threats. Feel free to unfollow or even block our page if that is what you need to do for your own peace of mind. We are not all called to do the same work, and that is one thing most of us love about Unitarian Universalism.

If you are still with us after all of that, thank you and welcome aboard.

There are a lot of congregations looking for a new DRE, and that is really exciting (as a Religious Educator myself).

Want to stand out? Make sure that you actually list your salary range and benefits. I have seen and heard of several congregations that say they are meeting UUA Compensation Standards only to find out that they aren't offering the full benefits package or don't have a budget for professional development or expenses. That is really going to matter to a candidate making choices about their career path. So is admitting whether you have the budget for a *credentialed* professional or not.

Being a good employer is part of being a good steward of the congregation and its mission, and it is part of making sure you have the best person for this important work. We Religious Educators are more likely to want to work with a congregation that admits where things stand over one that tries to obscure the facts.

"The Ecology of Generosity" - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

"The Ecology of Generosity"
Sunday, March 6, 10:50 am, Worship Service Livestream

Our preacher this week, The Rev. Vail Weller, has served congregations as parish minister in West Virginia, Michigan, and most recently San Mateo, California, where she still resides. She is also the Congregational Giving Director at the Unitarian Universalist Association and we are so grateful to have her with us on this Sunday when we kick off our 2022-23 annual giving/pledge drive for this community. This week's sermon "The Ecology of Generosity" draws deeply on the thoughts of Robin Wall Kimmerer and her book “Braiding Sweetgrass” and explores the cycles of nature and the cycles of generosity.

Rev. Vail Weller, Guest Minister; Rev. Vanessa Rush Southern, Senior Minister; Sam King & “Wonder Dave” Crady, Canvass Co-Chairs; Reiko Oda Lane, Organist; UUSF Choir led by Mark Sumner, Music Director

Eric Shackelford, Camera; Shulee Ong, Camera; Donald Shearer, Camera; Jonathan Silk, Communications Director; Joe Chapot, Live Chat Moderator; Remigio Flood, Sexton; Judy Payne, Flowers; Alex Darr, Les James, Tom Brookshire, Zoom Coffee Hour

No One is Born a Unitarian Universalist

Being a UU requires a willing commitment, and it is a commitment we have to make time and again as members of the congregation.

How to eat a car - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on March 6, 2022. The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all; Our sixth principal is broad and demanding. How in the world do we promote this, much less make this happen?

RT @MonotheistC: I saw more love & grace in Ukrainian civilians feeding a Russian soldier & letting him speak to his mother in the middle of a war in a video I watched than the Trinitarians who I know personally who blocked me simply for being Unitarian & no longer a Trinitarian. Very sad :S

Widening the Circle - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on February 27, 2022. Liberation theology helps us understand that we all can fulfill our greatest potential when we open ourselves and our institutions to all people - greater and greater perspectives. Unitarian Universalism proposes that walking together in covenantal community, in the ways of love, is our way toward widening that circle, maybe even bursting it wide open so none of us left on the inside or the outside.

A Good Goodbye - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

Rev. Meg Barnhouse's sermon delivered on February 20, 2022. What makes a good goodbye? Our goodbye is going to be a long one. How can we talk about our gains and losses? How can we talk about the grief and the love that we share?

Religious Discussion Groups

2 March 2022 at 21:57

Are there any online UU different religions discussion groups? I'm not entirely sure if this even is a thing, but the congregation where I'm at in the world isn't very interested in the discussion of it very much and focuses way more on secular humanism (which is great for sure). I just want to talk with others more about our spiritual journeys, topics in different religions, etc. Is this something that exists?

For Ash Wednesday, let us remember that the Bible got some things absolutely right:

"Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless. All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return."

Ecclesiastes 3:19-20 [NIV]

Let us remember that we are all made of dust, not just of the Earth, but of long dead stars. Our time is finite, and it is up to us to make it matter (no pun intended).
