The I Am UU project is all about making it easier for you to confidently and proudly tell the world "I Am UU". We hope to inspire conversations about what it means to be Unitarian Universalist and why belonging matters to each of you. We want you to have those conversations with one another so that it is easier to have them with the people you meet in your daily life, should it come up. Some UUs seem almost ashamed of their church, they are so resistant to bringing it up, and we want to help change that.

We are not sponsored, edited, or endorsed by the UUA, but the UUA is well aware of our work. We are lay-led, crowdfunded, and grassroots, much like many of your congregations. And like a congregation, our work is too important to charge admission for! We give it away because we want people to share it and start conversations among their friends. The shares are what we work for!

If you value what we do, it helps a lot when you make a comment about it. Likes are great, but comments are more informative and help us get seen.

If you *really* value our work, we need funding, and with over ten thousand fans, it wouldn't take a lot to fund us if more people just gave a little.

"God" is not a name. The New King James Bible uses the word "gods" hundreds of times to refer (disdainfully) to deities of other cultures.

The world has worshiped thousands, possibly millions, of gods throughout history. The methods of worship and the stories told about them helped define cultures for tens of thousands of years.

Each of these gods represented the hopes and/or fears of a community. Learning about them teaches us much about humanity.

"Being UU is a choice to be part of something and letting that something help you be a better member of the various communities you move through. Unitarian Universalism is about trying to be your best self, knowing that you will occasionally fail, and trying again. It is about building and rebuilding relationships; we have to adjust and grow as we learn."

Lessons from Pandemic Chaplaincy - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

Guest Minister Rev. Lee Legault's sermon delivered on January 16, 2022. Lee Legault weathered the winter and summer 2021 COVID surges as a chaplain resident at Ascension Seton Medical Center of Austin, feeling privileged to walk beside patients and their families in the pandemic. She brings a grab bag of thoughts/advice/admonishments/assurances based on her time working with COVID patients and their families. As the Omicron variant rages, let's learn and grow together to the benefit of the interconnected web of existence of which we are all apart. Lamenting together, we may take heart that we are never truly alone.

β€œAn Appeal for Law and Order and Common Sense”

By: I Am UU
An interfaith group of clergy leaders, responding to protests and demonstrations and the arrest of these activists, released a public statement to the local press:

β€œWe are now confronted by a series of demonstrations by some of our Black citizens, directed and led in part by outsiders. We recognize the natural impatience of people who feel that their hopes are slow in being realized. But we are convinced that these demonstrations are unwise and untimely.”

Now, I must confess that I have altered the above ever so slightly, substituting the word β€œBlack” for the original, β€œNegro”. With that one change, the condemnation of Martin Luther King Jr., which inspired his β€œLetter From a Birmingham Jailβ€œ, sounds almost exactly like the condemnation we hear today against #BlackLivesMatter:

Today will present many, many chances to read the words of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. There are already oh-so-many opportunities for the curious to study his work. There are many, many sch…

History is not History - Sermons-First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

"History is not History"
Sunday, January 16, 10:50 am, Worship Service Livestream

On this Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend when we could focus on the history of the Civil Rights Movement, let's focus on the present realities. From the old deed to an old house to a new staff member's request for a simple lanyard, to modern civil rights leaders asking we celebrate MLK Day only one way this year, what does our bending of the moral arc of our nation today say about where history is not history, but right in front of us.

Rev. Vanessa Rush Southern, Senior Minister; Carmen Barsody, Worship Associate; Mari Magaloni Ramos, Worship Associate; Reiko Oda Lane, Organist; Nancy Munn, soprano; Brielle Marina Neilson, alto; Ben Rudiak-Gould, tenor; Richard Fey, bass; Mark Sumner, Music Director

Eric Shackelford, Camera; Shulee Ong, Camera; Donald Shearer, Camera; Jonathan Silk, Communications Director; Joe Chapot, Live Chat Moderator; Kelvin Jones, Sexton; Judy Payne, Flowers; Alex Darr, Les James, Tom Brookshire, Zoom Coffee Hour

Curiosity and Rom-Communism - Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church

Even at the famous March on Washington, among the leaders of the Civil Rights and Labor movements, there was still prejudice and marginalization. We can learn a lot from examining that, and we can choose to do better in our own work.

Today, you will hear a lot about the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. It was the setting for the most celebrated words of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., what has become know as …

Over this long weekend a lot of people are going to be quoting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. And, if tradition holds, a lot of them are going to be pulling quotes out of context and misrepresenting what Dr. King believed.

I encourage you all to read one or two of Dr. King's lectures, in their entirety, this week. Here are some suggestions on where to start.

Living with Intention - First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin

Assistant Minister Rev. Chris Jimmerson's sermon delivered on January 9, 2022. We probably all would like to think we are living intentional lives, but how do we do that? Do we direct our sights toward goals for ourselves, our future and what we hope for our world? What about living with integrity and in congruity with our our deepest values and selves? We'll explore how living with intention may involve taking time for discernment - examining our lives from the balcony rather than the dance. floor.

As a theist, a liberal theist, in a pluralistic religious movement, and a congregation with a significant humanist/atheist/non-theist members, I don't talk much about God. Today, I will, and what that word, that-which-it-points-toward, means for me, and has for other progressive theists too. And whether it is useful to us, even those of us, who don't think we are theists.

Hello! The person sharing this with you is a Unitarian Universalist. Maybe you've heard about us from Stephen Colbert or Garrison Keillor, maybe you've heard us mentioned on The Simpsons.

We don't want to be defined by pop-culture anymore, and this message is being shared as an invitation. If you want to know what being a Unitarian Universalist means to your friend, this is a great time to start a conversation.

No one will call or come to the house uninvited, but we really want to let people know who we are and what we stand for. If you're curious, please ask!

Upcoming Retreats? Mental health at all time low

5 January 2022 at 14:23

Need some help.

Best friend checked himself on suicide watch. (Great- I’m proud of him!) Treatment restricts communication w friends (bad for me)

Another good friend passed away last year. (Horrible)

Single dad to special needs son (blessing, but challenge)

On uua.org many links for references to conference centers that host UU retreats, most are canceled due to covid.

Anyone of any upcoming retreats? I’m needing help. Thanks
