We are also aware of media reports that the suspect in custody identified himself as a Unitarian Universalist and it is our understanding that he is not a current member of any UU congregation. While law enforcement authorities have not yet identified a motive, we condemn his action, which is in direct opposition to the principles and values of Unitarian Universalism.
We have seen the reports that authorities are investigating the incident as a potential hate crime. And we are all too aware that both Islamophobia and antisemitism are increasing in the United States. We will continue to show up unequivocally in faithful public witness against such hate. We deeply believe that siding with love will bring both justice and peace to so many who have suffered from oppression and injustice β and we will continue to work towards a Beloved Community that welcomes all who share our values.
