TOEFL???

UUs are known for their acronyms: YRUU, UUSC, DRE, UUMA, etc.

I have found a non-UU acronym that is amusing: TOEFL. It refers to a test taken by college students entering college in the U.S. if their first language is not English. The problem is that many folks have changed the name of the test, but not the acronym.

For example, as of Feb. 28, 2005, a Google search returns the following number of results:

• "Test of English as a Second Language" TOESL - 1 result (perhaps this page will make it 2!)
• "Test of English as a Second Language" TOEFL - 600 results!!

At least most places keep the name of the test as original:

• "Test of English as a Foreign Language" TOEFL - 241,000 results (approx)

And just to prove that folks can be really confused:

• "Test of English as a First Language" TOEFL - returns 8 results!
